Should I buy N800?

I've been contemplating whether to get N800 for the past few days. What I'm most afraid of is getting the power on/off problem.

Re: Should I buy N800?

I've had an N800 for over half a year now and never had any problems at all with the power switch. I suspect most people don't have problems either.

One thing worth emphasising though is that there's no reason to switch the N800 off. You can charge it while it's on, and you can lock the screen for carrying it in a bag or pocket. It can be set to offline mode if you're in a hospital or aircraft.

There's usually no real reason to use the tablet's power switch at all, because it's designed to be left on in standby mode like a mobile phone. Leaving a computer in standby mode consumes much less power than constantly switching on and booting up. I know it sounds crazy but it's true.

Comments made by Nokia employees here and in Maemo Bugzilla appear to indicate there's a firmware update due to be released very soon to fix that problem. "How soon is soon," and "should I wait" are questions you'll have to ponder on your own.

Yes, I know there is no reason to switch off. But if it hang, then I would have to remove the battery.

Removing the battery is no problem. It's not like the N800 is the iPhone or anything.

Re: Should I buy N800?

Go for it!

really, it's worth buying. you will be able to do the same as on a N810 (except GPS - external module is sometimes better - think overheat in long trips).

the pad is always available (unlike n810), full SD and mini-usb. this thing is pretty standard.

while i like very very much my new N810, the old N800 is still more likely to be taken with me in trips, 'cause of the full SD things (storing pictures/movies from camera to this great gadget - up to 16GB of storage)

about your fears, i have 1 n800 and 1 n810, none with problems. And in case of problems i don't think starting the n800 after keeping it 30 minutes in the freezer will be a problem, since both my tablets have more the 15 days uptime, you

so, give nokia some money :)

Re: Should I buy N800?

I just bought my N800 last week and can say it's a great piece of hardware. But, something to consider is there is what I consider a significant difference between the N800 & the N810. The N810 has a trans-reflective display that allows it to be easily read outside.

Another other difference is you can add up to 16gb (allegedly) more memory to the N800. If I had known about the trans-reflective display I likely would have waited for a price drop in the N810 as I like to read ebooks on my current PDA, a Sony Clie nx73v, that lets me turn off the backlight and can be read outside, in color, with ease. But I can make due with both for now. It is just a bother if I am really into a specific book because I can't easily move the book from one device to the other. But, like I say this is something I just will adjust to for now.

The OS is just OK. Mostly due to it being newish and thus a lack of applications. Of course I find this to be a pretty universal issue with Linux in general. Too many versions that result in applications that run on one system not running on another until someone decides to port it over.

Also do not expect many of the great PDA apps to have analogs on the NIT's. Even though the OS is VERY open, I see few apps that are anything beyond "...just-another-media-player.." I am sure they will come but for some reason that is all people seem to want to provide. These things are pretty powerful devices that have plenty of room and clock-cycles to spare.

It would be interesting to see of there is a port of mySQL for Maemo sometime in the future. Until there I'll have to live with creating my own client-server apps on one of my web servers and just use a web interface to manage the data. Maybe that is the future of how best to leverage the ability of the tablet as the application becomes completely platform agnostic just dependent on the browser.

Last there is no Java runtime yet...I have not read much saying to expect one anytime soon, which I find very disappointing.

Still, I am thrilled with the NIT. I am using it more every day...especially for web browsing. I do like having the the iGo Stowaway keyboard too and am getting used to it pretty easily. Being a touch typist I feel like I am missing something if I have to look at the keyboard/on-screen keyboard to type. The the device becomes the focus rather than the task at hand.

Last, I am having a great time reacquainting myself with the Unix-like OS. I see this device as helping me enjoy computing again after almost 40yrs playing around with them I sorta had lost interest. I find the device fascinating an well worth the investment.

Have fun if ya decide to take the plunge. BTW, I bought mine from Amazon directly and with overnight shipping it was just $247...hard to beat that deal.

I'm a new owner/user and I'm really liking it. If you like tinkering with technology you'll enjoy it. Serious geek factor :)

The supporting community also seems to be a good bunch of people willing to help regardless of how silly my questions are.

I have the power on/off problem but have resigned to just leaving it on and charging it every so often. The battery life amazes me. I bring it to work and use it on and off all day checking email and occasionally surfing and it never comes close to running out of power. I just charge it overnight and I'm good to go the next day. I bought mine at MacMall for $199 shipped but not sure if the deal is dead or not.

Dumb question, what is the on/off problem?

Can also reccomend the N800, it is imo the best buy, though am thinking about getting the N810 since I never will get used to the onscreen keyboard, but other than that the N800 is a suberb little device.

- no, no, no! i have 32GB total storage, consisting of (2) 16GB SDHC cards (as the n800 has [2] SD slots)...

- this is a 'sweet spot' for $ vs storage, working out to US$3.75 per GB... IOW, i got the 16GB cards for US$59 each...

- the 32GB SDHC is too expensive right now... (almost US$400!) but when it comes down in price, we'll have 64GB storage for our n800s!

:-)

I'm a cheapskate -- bought only one 16 GB now, but I'll buy a 32 GB when they come down, so I'll have 48 GB, and not have to throw $120 of old SDs away :p

Hmm cool! Some problems I foresee would be...

-Getting a screen protector
-Getting a proper case

The N800 isn't popular in my country (Singapore). Do you guys use the default pouch that comes with the N800? How well does it work?

Also, is a screen protector needed? I tried out the demo set and it seems the touch screen is quite hardy.

Re: Should I buy N800?

Nokia's screens have always been great. My Nokia E70 suffers a lot of abuse (many droppings and in the same pocket with my keys) and only has a few minor scratches in which you can't see unless you tilt it at an angle and reflect it off of a powerful light. The screen protector isn't needed unless you're getting some of the nice anti-glare stuff. A case would be nice as when you're not using it is when you're likely to scratch your screen up.

Re: Should I buy N800?

My N800 had the power on /off problem.Hopefully I fixed it.
Following is what I did:
1.bought a scandisk SDHC card and put it in internal slot(internal slot is picky).
2.boot from internal SD card(lots of people did in this forum).
3.cleaned the files on SD card(I had 10000+ on my SD card).

Trust me even there is a new framewire lots of users would still have The power on /off problem. It maybe the hardware problem(interal flash(flash)).

Well I can speak about me in another country where the N800 is not that popular (I just know 2 people with one, and one of them is a guy from the Nokia Store). Mexico.

Of course I can't find things for the N800 here... but the screen protectors of the PSP are almost perfect (they need a 3 mm trim) and the same goes for the case... I got a great one that is meant to be for PSP but works perfectly for my N800...

I use the pouch when I'm not on the road...

BTW, the N800 comes with a "Screen protector", just remove the hologram but not the plastic covering (even though it gets all scratched in a month) (the plastic cover, not the screen of course)

HAHAHA...d'oh!!! OK....but boy a 64gb NIT...how cool would that be? Then again, beyond video & audio, what would you store in that sorta room? I mean it's not like you can run a CAD program on the thing...yet...

Lessee,
  • Video (movies, television shows, random clips).
  • Audio (music, podcasts, audio books)
  • Pictures (photos, art, digital)
  • ebooks (reference PDFs, HTML, RTF, TXT)
  • Games (ScummVM, pupnik's ports, Doom/Quake data)
  • Application data (documents, spreadsheets, Maemo Mapper/"Map" maps)
  • Alternative bootables (Debian, KDE, Poky, ITOS)

Yeah, it adds up rather quickly. Of particular interest to me is being able to keep a lot of movies and television shows on there. I'm a big fan of a lot of the Adult Swim shows (particularly Frisky Dingo and Metalocalypse), and the tablet is a great way to introduce friends to them.

+1

- the PSP protectors are common, [relatively] inexpensive, and work well

- AFA a case: a soft, zippered DS case w/internal storage pocket runs about US$9 here (found one in Circuit City) and stores one n800, wallwart, shorty USB cable, adapter, and thumbdrive rather handily...

Re: Should I buy N800?

For screen protectors go to http://www.zagg.com/ I got one a while back, seems to be pretty good products (I havent used the n800 one yet but I did apply one to my w810i mobile phone and it works great)...

As for case, I found a case logic portable hard drive case which fits great and works really well!

Got my n800 after Christmas and turn it off and on each day and have never run into any on/off issue so not overly concerned about it!

Re: Should I buy N800?

Just got my N800 after pondering over it for the longest time! The N800 came with OS2007. I went ahead and upgraded to OS2008 after charging the battery to full. It took only less than 2 mins!

I'll be buying a screen protector for it tomorrow. Does the N800 support 2 x 16GB SDHC max? I tried to fit the N800 with the default pouch into my NDSL case, but no go. Just the N800 alone will fit the NDSL case, but it doesn't look too good.

Well I'm wondering if any NDSL case will fit the N800 with the default pouch just nice?

As long as the cards are SDHC, you can go as high as you want (do not know the actual limit but I think I read it is in the terabytes), 32GB is what they have now but they are way pricey, but yes, the 16GBs should do it.

Hello everyone. I'm new to this site as of today.

I've also got the N800 this past week. Was thinking about this as far back as the N770, but I'm glad I waited. N800 looks beautiful. Upgrade to OS2008 was painless.

The first thing I noticed is that web browsing totally blows my iPaq away.

Working my way through it now. First frustrations are:

-why can't I get any of my PDFs to reflow when I increase the magnification. Chasing the text around the screen is a major pain. I have no trouble with the same docs on the ipaq.

Other thing is with regard to videos. I have read dozens of postings on the video performance issue, and had pretty much given up trying to see useful video on this device, but General Antilles - how have you managed to make this a usable video platform?

I don't see your problem. Install mplayer, and keep the sizes and bitrates reasonable—no problems. . . .
