VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use

Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
i have to do it with USB keyboards, but not the igo...weird
|
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
It's happened to me, too. But I'm wondering if it's just because I didn't turn off the keyboard before stowing it away [Blue colours 'FN'+'Backspace'] so the N800 was basically confused and still waiting for the iGo's bluetooth signal when I wanted to use the stylus... .
I'd hate to think I'm my own bug. I've been called 'batty' before, though, so I guess it's possible :-) |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
Betty Woo,
I'm pretty sure I've tried all possible ways of "unpairing" the iGo, and none are working. General Antilles tells me that he can either let the keyboard just sleep, or else fold it up, and the tablet recognizes that it's no longer in use, and then makes the onscreen keyboard available again. So I tried the sleep method. And I got excited when the tablet's backlight came on at the precise moment the keyboard went to sleep. I though, HA!, IT RECOGNIZES THE SLEEPING! But, alas, still no on-screen keyboard. Thanks for your input, though! |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
Hmm...
So I use the iGo and type, type, type... Close the iGo, wait until the blue tooth symbol turns white - maybe 10 seconds - tap into a text area and up pops the on-screen keyboard. It seems to just work without un-pairing and re-pairing, no fn. keys - just fold it away. I was quite impressed the first time I used it ... This is on the original N800 OS2008, I have not updated yet. |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
I guess I have another anomaly: only once--out of many separate uses of the BT keyboard--have I seen the bluetooth symbol in the status bar. Even though the keyboard starts working upon hitting one letter to wake it, there is no bluetooth symbol. Is this super-weird?
|
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
This happens to me also when I connect a USB keyboard, as well as a friend of mine who uses a BT keyboard (not iGo).
I don't think that this bug is specific to any brand/interface. |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
UPDATE: Three times in a row now, I've used the keyboard, then folded it and let the tablet rest for about 10 minutes, and then had the on-screen keyboard appear when requested. Biz-arrr. I'll definitely re-post in a few days to report whether the problem is gone, or is now just appearing intermittently.

Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
UPDATE 2: Holy sh**!! Not only is the on-screen keyboard now popping up after the iGo goes night night, but--for the first time EVER since getting the n800 in Dec--the large full-screen keyboard is popping up when I press my finger on a text entry field!
Who knows how long this will last, but the fact that it's now working is really bizarre.... |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
Murphy's Law :)
Did you install the latest firmware update? |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
No, I didn't. Simply baffling...

Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
Strange indeed. I experienced the symptoms just last night and a friend of mine the day before. Probably a sticky process or something.

Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
I have an iGo BT keyboard also & have never had this problem.
Glad to see you've got it working again though. If this happens again, try typing maemo-gtk-im-switch osso-input-method in X-Term. This might set the input method to the onscreen keyboard without having to reboot. |

Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
@Urnass, that is a really helpful suggestion. Earlier I was thinking that it might be possible to force the on-screen keyboard in x-term, but I forgot to ask.
@Betty Woo, thanks for your vibes! |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
@Urnass, I haven't tried your suggested solution yet, but fanoush in this thread says

Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
An Update: I've discovered that in order to ensure that the onscreen keyboard will be restored after using the BT kb, I need to cease using the tablet, close the BT kb, and let about 10 minutes go by before using the tablet again. If I use the tablet before this 10 minutes of "sleep" is up, I won't get the onscreen kb back (even if I use the BT kb again and *then* let them sleep for 10 minutes.
In trying various combinations, I've discovered another weird thing. Typically, when the BT kb pairs up successfully, I do *not* see the BT symbol in the status bar. However, every once in a while, after hitting the first key to "wake" the BT kb (usually this is when the Notes app is open), the tablet will go berserk, the desktop background will go grey, and then the BT symbol will appear in the status bar, my clock applet will disappear, and the tablet will stay like that until I reboot. I have also noticed that sometimes when this happens, I am unable to close CLAWS. Wee-ird. |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
Is this with OS2008 and the ultraslim? I use OS2007 and the Sierra. I simply fold it and I'm immediately back to normal (that is, on-screen) keyboard.
|
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
I am using OS2008 (though not the latest "power on/off"-fixing version), and the iGo Stowaway BT kb.

I have an iGo/ThinkOutside Stowaway 4-row keyboard, and I never had any trouble with my on-screen keyboard reactivating immediately after closing the Stowaway. That is, until I just disabled the Bluetooth icon in the status bar as above to test this out. With the status bar's Bluetooth icon disabled, your bug appears. Re-enabling the Bluetooth icon in the status bar kills the bug again. |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
THANK YOU!!!!
You are right, re-enabling the Bluetooth icon in the status bar removed the bug---i got my on-screen keyboard back *almost* immediately upon closing the iGo. I just waited until the icon turned from blue to gray/white and then the on-screen keyboard appeared when called. This really is a strange bug. I'm not sure if it's made all the stranger in light of the fact that when the tablet has gone berserk in the past (as I described earlier), the bluetooth icon appears as the left-most icon in the status bar, but now that the icon is permanently enabled (as per your suggestion), it appears as the right-most icon. Perhaps this is an inconsequential observation, however. Thanks again! |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
I finally got around to voting for this. Bugzilla is kinda hostile to the general public, isn't it?
BTW, who do we have to convince to bump this up from "Low" priority? I have had this bug lately, and I haven't disabled the bluetooth icon... |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
Id say, reflash you device with the same or the newest whichever you prefer Id say its from some other app conflicting with the sys.... just a guess but I had the same keyboard and when it was on the on screen disappeared and when it was off the on screen came back no problems, when the bt icon was displayed or not...
my igo slim was stolen and now I have a dinovo mini, but I never even had a hiccup with the igo. |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
I'm using the 4-row igo keyboard and in the middle of typing, if i press the "shift" key it activates this horrible auto-complete mode.
the worst part is that when i'm done with the bt kb, if i try to get on screen to appear, all that's left is this wierd grey box at the bottom (maybe for handwriting?) but it won't recognize any taps from the stylus and won't allow me an option to switch to on-screen kb (finger or stylus) this is driving me nuts - maybe i can just disable handwriting? (i don't use it anyways) |

To change where it is, go Control Panel -> Panels, and select it, then use the /\ and \/ buttons to move it up and down the list. And, to recover from a desktop crash, Control Panel -> Panels, OK. The config of the task navigator and status bar will be restored. (Home applets also die, but there's no quick way to recover them...) Quote:

What's that you say? your N800 has no slide-out keyboard? Whaddyaknow, I can't find mine either! But I must have one, or it wouldn't be out... So just run Code:
gconftool -t bool -s /system/osso/af/slide-open false |
Re: VOTE BUG: no on-screen keyboard after iGo use
Benson's solution

But seeing as I'm only the 8th person to report what is, for N800 users, a serious bug with a very non-obvious solution, it would be great if more users would go to the bug-reporting-site and report it. It just takes a minute to get an account and vote for the bug. (I don't know how else to move it from Low Priority. They give "low priority" to a bug that essentially disables the unit for N800 users?) |

also note that
Code:
gconftool -t bool -s /system/osso/af/keyboard-attached falsenokia seems to love using gconf to tell the apps about the state of hardware... |
