Back on topic: sooner or later the N800 will be discontinued. It's inevitable. All I was saying in my counterpoints is that many of the reasons given to "prove" that it's happening now are not necessarily absolute.

Re: Nokia N800 discontinued?

I just ordered a Nokia N800 from Nokia's US website the other day, so I don't think it is ready to be discontinued just yet.

P.S. I realize I spent an arm and a leg more than I would have spent elsewhere, but I would rather pay for the security. I almost ordered one at Buy.com for $70 cheaper, but they couldn't give me a tracking number or tell me who the vendor was or who was shipping it or anything.

Er . . . buy.com gives you a tracking number for all of their shipping options (as far as I'm aware), and they are the vendor and the shipper. . . .

Talk about wasting money. :\

I have mine just getting delivered today, so you'll hopefully forgive me if I sound noob'ish.

But what does it matter if the N800 is getting discontinued or not? We already have ours, and the N800 and N810 are so close to being the same beast that we'll benefit from any further development.

However, I ordered mine from Buy.com about a year ago and the box looked like it went through Calcutta in order to get to my house. I was so concerned I almost sent it back.

Yes, and I already said so: the problem is not support. It just matters for people who do not want to spend the N810 price or for people who need 2 full-size SD slots.

Well, that would be me. I do like the N800 better for several reasons -- lower price, more storage, rotating camera, bigger USB socket. I've just about decided to get one, but I don't like the feeling of being rushed. On the other hand, the newly-lowered prices are a nice silver lining to the dilemma :^) . And as others have pointed out, it's not about to become obsolete. An open, Linux box with those specs will be useful for something around the home or office for a long time.

Actually, the rotating camera borders on pointless since Gizmo's not working for me any more (not consistently, and video calls to desktop Gizmo crashes the latter). However, like you, I like the N800 for the dual SDHC slots, but I'm not sure about the larger USB socket (isn't it the same size as the one on the N810?)

I realised that the price difference of USD200 could get me a BT keyboard, but that's not stopping me from getting an N810 soon :)

It's mostly an issue of thickness:

Re: Nokia N800 discontinued?

I read in a review that the N800 has a "mini" USB socket, while the N810 has a "micro." Admittedly it's not a major difference, but I figure that I may be using that socket a lot. So an extra millimeter of thickness, making it more durable or easier to use, would be helpful. Sometimes in a poorly lit place, it can be tough to figure out which is the skinny side of those little trapezoid-shaped plugs.
