Media players that don't lock up
 

Does ANYONE know if there is a media player that DOESN'T try and index eveery damned file on the system on launch??
So far I've tried:
kmplayer (Admittedly doesn't index on load but locks up when loading a playlist)
kagu
ukmp
canola
youamp

They all freeze on load because they take it upon themselves to load and index EVERY *§ß±¥$#% media file on my cards, and if I forget to load xterm and unmount samba (Which can take anything up to 5 minutes on this damned thing) they also try to index my entire server 2TB across an 802.11b wifi link!

All I want is something like PocketTunes, or TCPMP or WinAMP!!
Something fast with a waaay better/faster file browser than the N800's one (Which also loves to try and index directories and slow things down even more!)

With Canola, you can set it to index only specific folders, which is what I do to exclude podcasts and videocasts, which I view using VideoCentre.

To Clarify: Canola2 does not index every file on the device unless you as the user expressly ask it to. In fact it does not find any media until the user goes into settings, Media Library and sets the "eye with tick" to confirm scan in a given area.

Be aware that to select "Sub-folders only"; within the top areas of for example "Audio Clips, Internal card and Removable card" using Canola can be a little confusing. You have to leave the eye un-ticked at the top level then physically select the "folder icon/text" in order to delve deeper into any underlying folder structure. (Selecting a tick only on the specific sub-folders you want Canola2 to scan)

This way you can be very specific about which areas and Sub-folders are scanned by Canola. For example if you intend to only store your Audio clips in a "My_Music" folder on the External MMC.

• untick Audio clips (This would ensure users home area is not scanned at all for audio)
• untick Internal Card (This would ensure internal card was not scanned at all, Note: assuming no sub-folders were ticked subsequently etc,)
• untick external Card, but then delve into it by selecting the text and ONLY tick "My_Music" folder on my MMC to ensure that that was the only folder searched for My_Music collection.

I do see where the OP is coming from. I have a LOT of music stored on my two 16GB SDHCs and the built-in Media Player does take a VERY long time to index everything ever so often.

MediaBox only indexes those folders (and subfolders) that you give it to index. Well, it doesn't even index. It just looks for new files for thumbnailing.

XMMS is AWESOME - has a function EQ; save playlists; skinnable UI; doesn't search for files - you add them to your playlist. I use XMMS every day and love it!

I use mpd, mmpc, and mpd mode of powerlaunch. Search my old posts for more info, but mpd is a network-controllable Music Playing Daemon, mmpc is a maemo-fied controller, and powerlaunch can be configured to lock the screen and use the hardware keys (while in my pocket) to control it.

I'll try that later this evening... is it Hildonized or just left as itself? (Might be a bit hard to use if it's left 'stock'; I remember the trouble trying to use it when I went from 800x600 to a 1280x1024 screen! :p)

@MikeL: I may try it again later, but I already uninstalled Canola and haven't got the time to download the whole thing and wait for it to install again :(
I think it is the wrong direction for what I'm looking for anyway 'tho - I'm looking for something more like VLC/WinAMP/MediaPlayer Classic/XMPlay, and less like AmaroK/WindowsMediaCentre/Creative Media Centre/Orb

There is only one problem - I couldn't get it to play anything! :eek:
I added a folder full of files to the playlist, but then it just sits there. Cycling over to the play controls and hitting play does nothing...
The files were a mixture of ogg and mp3, although there was a zip-file in there that it (Bizzarly) tried to play...

Edit: Ahh, it wasn't KiliKali, it just triggered an annoying bug that I've been getting recently where MMC1 disappears :(
I shall try again after waiting another 15mins for the obligatory reboot...
