My N800 came today!
What class is the internal flash memory, and how do I go about installing a larger internal card?
|
Re: My N800 came today!
You can't upgrade the built-in memory, but you can add an SD (regular or high density) card to the empty slot under the battery cover.

Re: My N800 came today!
There are two kind of "internal" flash:
- A built-in 256MB flash storage. This one is integrated in the chipset and can't be replaced. This is where all your installed applications go, as well as your Documents directory etc. (/home/user/ in the filesystem). - A slot for a memory card, under the battery cover. This one takes SD cards as well as the mini-SD card that came with the unit (in an adapter). Buy any SD or SDHC card, install it there. Then there's also the external slot for another SD card. It's all marked on that little leaflet that came in the box. |
Re: My N800 came today!
Dang.
If I run out of room on that card, can I install applications onto the removable ones? |
Re: My N800 came today!
You can, with some trickery, the simplest way is probably to clone the operating system to an SD card and boot from there. Search the forum, there's at least one or two threads currently active on that. (Out of the box executables wont' execute if installed on a card, the reason being that cards are mounted with the exe bit turned off.)
However, you won't run out of space on that internal flash unless you do something pretty dramatic (at least not by just installing applications. More probably by installing lots of music, pictures and other data, all of which can easily be put on an SD card without problems, unlike executable applications). One reason the internal flash will hold out quite long is that it's using a compressed filesystem, so it'll take much more than it looks like. |
Re: My N800 came today!
Also, the SD cards can host virtual memory, which can help a bit.

Re: My N800 came today!
Argh! My computer can't find the tablet because it can't (or won't) install the "Nokia BB5 ADL Loader USB Generic" drivers.
Is there anywhere I can find those? The Nokia site itself doesn't host them, for some reason. |

Re: My N800 came today!
I am having the same problem, but just on my laptop (after successfully flashing numerous times, it quit working out of the blue). reinstalling the wizard was no help. I have filed bug 2913 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2913) but no response yet. Please vote on it.
I have also looked for the drivers with no success. The link on Nokia's site is dead. |

Oh, and by the way: I was once the factory quality engineer for the N800 so I'm at least a little familiar with it. ;) That's one reason I'm so amazed to be encountering this problem-- after hundreds of flashings! |
Re: My N800 came today!
Oh well. Now I can't get my PC to add music the the N800 properly. It shows both of the cards when I connect it, one of them being used for virtual memory. The other one is completely blank. I tried adding music to it, but the tablet couldn't locate it.
Troubleshoot? |

Re: My N800 came today!
Think of it as fake RAM. Your desktop computer can do the same thing using hard disk space, but I would imagine that that is considerably slower than a flash card.

Re: My N800 came today!
Any idea on the thread it could have been? There are a hundred search terms I could try for that.

Re: My N800 came today!
"The link on Nokia's site is dead."
What do you do in that case, file a bug report? And if the whole site went down, there would be a vote on whether it was worthy of being fixed? Or is there someone at Nokia who is responsible for making its links work? |
Re: My N800 came today!
Sorry, my sarcasm filter just overloaded.
To Rezi: offhand, no... but if I find it I'll post it. EDIT: I found the thread, but nothing in it after all that looks related to your reported problem. One user received an error and made this change to his XP registry to correct it: Quote:
Can you be more specific about your error? Can you post screen captures? |
Re: My N800 came today!
Nah, I got it. It took a little while, but it's working now.
|
Re: My N800 came today!
Have you checked the Device Manager? does it show there? sometimes the assigned drive letter to the external drive/s will conflict with drive letters already assigned...
|
Re: My N800 came today!
Yeah. I noticed that, then reinstalled all the drivers.
|
Re: My N800 came today!
Rezigrene, where did you find the drivers?
