just got my n800, my excitement turns to anger...

 hey all, ive been so excited about getting my n800....i bought it off ebay from a powerseller, so i figured it should be fine? but alas, this is not the case....
heres how it went....
1. open box, ooooo new and shiny toy.
2.insert battery, toy powers on, complete initial setup, power down (apparently not a good idea!)
3. get home... go to turn on again....blank screen.
4. look on forum for solution?
5. after pushing the button hundreds of times, with and without the stylus, taking out the battery, the sd card, with or without ac power, plugged into the usb.....the damn thing wont do ANYTHING
options?
i heard you can 'flash' the device...but doesnt it need to be on for this?
ive contacted the seller, but would rather fix this if possible...than wait for this to get returned, then a new one sent out.
sigh.
restore my faith people!
thanks :P

Stick the device on the charger and leave it there. It'll eventually power itself on into charging mode, after that, follow these instructions exactly:

Install xterm and becomeroot
  1. Boot the device normally by holding down the power button, you can unplug the charger once the device is booted.
  2. After the device is booted, you need to install xterm.
  3. Tapping HERE on the tablet should install xterm for you.
  4. Tap HERE to install the becomeroot package.
Reboot the Device
  1. Assuming xterm installed correctly, then open it up (should be in Extras in the Application Menu).
  2. Plug the device into one of the USB ports on your computer.
  3. Since reboot requires a root shell, type sudo gainroot and hit enter.
  4. After you have a root shell, type reboot and hit enter.
  5. Then as soon as you hit enter, begin holding down the Home key, and don't let go until you see a USB logo in the upper right of the Nokia splash screen.
Flash the Device
  1. If you see the USB logo at the Nokia splash screen, then the device is now waiting to be flashed.
  2. Go ahead and plug the barrel charger in in case the download takes a long time.
  3. Now, start the flasher and let it flash the device.

After the flasher's done, the device will be running the latest firmware and you should have no more problems powering on.

Re: just got my n800, my excitement turns to anger...

you can get the nokia flasher for Windows machines from the support/downloads area of www.nokia.com

if you have linux desktops instead of windows, you can get the flasher from maemo.org

  2. Start the flasher, and get it to the point where it's waiting for the device.
  3. Hold down the Home button, then while still holding down the Home button, press down the power key until the unit boots to a Nokia splash screen with a USB icon in the upper right.
The flasher will then proceed to flash the device with the latest software, thus fixing the power-on issues.

I want to add that "after that" above means "wait until fully charged and then unplug charger."

*sigh*

I did miss a step, but your correction will result in the unit powering back down and the process having to be repeated again if he doesn't turn it on before it shuts down.

I have amended my post to reflect the correct procedure.

I think you are still missing one step: "reboot" doesn't work unless you are root. (Which means... some way to get into root is needed. Installing Becomeroot maybe is the easiest?)

Haha. . . .

Another good point. <_<

Now it should be accurate.

There is the chance that it could be a straight-up defective unit (or that the charger is defective). . . .

Re: just got my n800, my excitement turns to anger...

if you can somehow charge the battery seperately using an external charger or a device that uses the same battery, this may help. you may be able to borrow a good battery from a helpful mobile shop. something similar happened to me when it ran out of juice and shut down. i couldn't get it to power on, and it wouldn't start charging. finally, after a dozen tries and some patience, it started charging. another thing that has worked twice was to take the battery out and warm it up in my hands for a few minutes before replacing it and plugging it in to charge. this seems to get it to give up its last bit of energy to start the charging cycle. but if you have been trying to power it on for a while, the battery might be completely dead.

make sure your charger works.

Re: just got my n800, my excitement turns to anger...

Take out battery and left it there for at least two hours. This should dry internal battery and remove any "currents" causing problems. Unfortunately this will not fix your problems. Situation will repeat with every turning on/off N800. The only real fix is flashing with newest OS2008. But read more about OS2008 before this step...

m.

ps. You can spend this two hours reading about power on/off enigma bug.

well that last one seemed to work for me :D left the battery out overnight, woke up, and put it together and she powered on....(can you say relief?) so now im just gonna charge up the battery

So, can you change the title of the post to "Anger turns to Shame"?

@wasabi: Hey! lay off the new user. You asked questions when you were new as well...

@sinner: What exactly do you mean by "when I installed root"? Are you talking about becomeroot or something else? If it worked correctly it shouldn't be asking for a password...

You may have the no-power-on problem. The latest version of OS2008 is supposed to fix it. I had the same experience you did when I first got mine. IF you have this issue, then there is nothing 'broken' with your device, it's just incompatible with its own firmware.

What worked for me was to, believe it or not, take the battery out of n800, put n800 into fridge for half hour, remove from fridge, insert battery, and power on. Then you can plug in to finish charging, or use it if the battery is decently charged. Then don't power down again until you update to the new OS. Not a big deal since the device lasts for many days in standby mode.

Yes, we've already established this.

Not entirely. It's not "incompatible", it's just that the OMAP timings for the bootup were off.

Same thing happened to mine on my first day of use. I returned it and got a new one from Amazon and it doesn't have any of the problems the old one had.
