Is there a Microsoft word program compatible with this tablet?

I just bought the n800 to use in nursing school. I love it except for the fact that my drug books and other references are not being supported by it. I bought it with the understanding it supported third party programs. Any insight on programs, such as microsft wrd, that are able to be downloaded as an application to the tablet? I am feeling so fustrated, limited on time and money....HELP HELP HELP. I dont want to get a different type of PDA/Tablet/Computer, but it seems like that is turning out to be my only option. :(

Doc Reader

Re: Is there a Microsoft word program compatible with this tablet?

Doc reader shall allow you to convert word docs in text or pdf format - but possibly some formatting and pictures could be lost. If you have reference materials in doc format, you better convert it by online services or on a desktop machine (i.e. with openoffice.org) in pdf, which you will be able to browse with your tablet.
The enclosed pdf reader does not allow searching, but if you need it (as I bet you do), you can install "evince".
If you need to make word processing, by now the simplest and safest option is to use the enclosed "notes" app which can save in html format - good to be imported in every modern wp. In the future, it's likely that abiword will be available (it's in beta stage now but still unusable for work), and that is a very nice wp with lots of import/export formats.
Use gnumeric for spreadsheets and simple databases - it's OK.
Use xournal for note taking by hand or for annotating pdf files. To have both gnumeric and xournal, there's a post of mine with a hack for it, until those applications modify their dependencies.
If you need to create office documents, there are more elaborate tricks. You can install kde as described by penguinbait, and you'll have the koffice suite of wp, sheet and slides creator. Or, as I did, install the basilisk II emulator of the old Apple mac computers, and search for a copy of microsoft office 4.2, which is cheap on ebay.

As you can see, there's no reason of being pessimistic... just ask for help!

You bought an Internet Tablet without first checking to confirm if there were document readers???

Here's my suggestions:

FBReader is an ebook reader that does a pretty decent job of handling my reference documents. The N800 also handles PDF pretty well, and seeing that I have Acrobat 8, I just have to make sure that it's compatible with older version of Acrobat, just to keep things simple and to prevent any new and unnecessary functions from choking the tablet

Your other option would be to get a Asus eeePC, which has document editing functionality which seems to be what you are looking for, rather than what you are supposed to be using an internet tablet for, i.e. on-the-go web experience for online reference, social networking, email, streaming video and music, offline video and music, etc, in a tablet form factor.

The iT, IMHO, is really not the ideal platform for document editing or composing large amounts of text, and the eeePC would be a better choice for that. However, as a mobile internet device / portable media player, it's more than adequate.

You can use Abiword to view (and edit) MS Word documents on the IT.

Re: Is there a Microsoft word program compatible with this tablet?

While I LOVE my N810 and use it as if it were my right arm... If I were buying a pocket device to be used in during nursing school/practice I would buy something like a Palm TX. You'll find tons of drug books, medical reference apps, MS Word apps etc. I doubt very seriously that you'll find any drug/medical reference apps for Maemo unless you make them yourself (like html for FBreader).

I've been a RN for 10 yrs and I'm currently studying to a Molecular Biologist - my N810 is always in my pocket when I'm in the lab/classroom - I do have quite a few scientific reference books made and I read pdf journal articles a lot. But whenever I work a shift at the hospital, I take my old Palm TX with me - I still use the medical reference books quite often.

Okay so I tried some of the things you suggested. I am definately not as computer savvy as everyone else seems t o be on here so please bear w ith me.... I downloaded evince to my n800, you said to do this to enable my searching capabilities through my text books right? I also tried the basilisk II emulator, downloaded it, finding the microsoft office is proving to be more difficult as just a direct download. I think the next problem I am going to encounter is the compatibility of my drug book and other medical references (the books I have came with the disks for uploading onto PDAs) with the n800. They say they are only Mac or Pc compatible and I have no idea how to convert/sync them so I can put them on a tablet. I dont plan on using the tablet for writing papers or anything, just quick references to my books. Any suggestions? Sorry if this sounds discombobulated, I am desperate not to get rid of this thing.

I really do like the n800, that is for sure. It has everything I could possibly want in terms of instant gratification.....except for the drugb book/reference thing. I am not sure how to do the html for FBreader thing, any tips? I looked at Palm, I am just not a fan of Pc, I always prefer my mac over everything else....a little jaded. Thanks for your help.

Re: Is there a Microsoft word program compatible with this tablet?

If you want a quick fix-it-now solution, you can just convert the Word documents to PDFs, which display nicely. If you're using a PC, install CutePDF Writer and "print" the documents to PDF files. If you're on a Mac, then just Print, hit the Preview button, and save your PDF.

This approach should work for any application with printing support, not just Word.

If the medical references are in CHM or PRC format (google for fbreader please) or any formats that are supported by fbreader, then you should not have a problem any more -- no conversion needed

I personally take html/online textbooks and reference books and convert them to Plucker format which is good for FBReader. The easiest way to do the conversion is by using Sunrise - there is SunriseXP for windows and I use Sunrise 0.42j on my Linux/KDE box (don't use Mac so not positive which desktop you would need). There is a great Plucker document creation tutorial here You would just ignore the Palm specific stuff of course.

If you're interested, I've got decent General Biology, BioChemistry and Molecular Biology textbooks already made. PM me your email and I'll send a copy.

Also, just for the record - you don't need a PC to use a Palm pda. I use Linux and there are workarounds available for pretty much everything. Palm already has everything you need for use on a Mac.

99.9% of Palm (prc) Medical References are DRM'd and/or have their own proprietary viewers - so I believe that using FBReader to view them is next to impossible.

You can read MS Word documents with a program called "doc reader." It is now available and working for OS2008. To get it going you also need a program called "antiword."

Sorry but I don't have the direct links at hand.

I use Google Docs to see my Word Documents... some formatting sometimes gets lost, but it works ok...

The downside: you need an internet connection.

But you can always save your word docs in your Mac as RTFs or as TXT and open them then in the native Notes reader of the N800

Re: Is there a Microsoft word program compatible with this tablet?

Open Office has a one-click icon for saving Word files as .pdf. Open Office is free, and has versions for Linux and Windows. The easiest way to do what you want is to save the documents as .pdf files, and transfer them to you tablet for reading.

Re: Is there a Microsoft word program compatible with this tablet?

ummm...word can save files directly to HTML. I have no idea what version of Word you have on your Mac but it should do the job. from there you can convert to pretty much any format using a wide variety of utilities. Even MobiPocket Creator, Plucker or any variety of document conversion apps specifically for word.

Personally would/will never find PDF's on this tiny display of any use at all. I am just not comfy with lateral scrolling. I find it interferes with digesting the content. Short of switching to a Tablet PC or a 12" laptop reading PDF's on the NIT's might be the most frustrating doc format around. Especially if the creator did not setup the doc re-flow correctly. Meaning the PDF is poorly created and does not include the ability to reformat for the given display allowing it to be read with anything smaller then the Hubble.

A couple problems you might find in using FBReader for research manuals is the lack of bookmarks and the lack of ability to add annotations. I love Fbreader but it still has a long way to go as a useful tool for research. But a pocket sized notebook works as a companion to the tablet seeing you already have it... ;)

If you need info on converting books to fit better on the tablet there is a site dedicated to ebook devices and many folks there use N8x0's & N770's as their reading device. You can visit http://www.mobileread.com/forums to see what info you can find there.

sgosnell 2008-03-04 15:59

Re: Is there a Microsoft word program compatible with this tablet?

You could read the HTML directly in the browser without any conversion. I disagree about the .pdf on the NIT. It's as good as any other format, and you can zoom in and out as you like. If the original document has a reasonable font size, you don't have to do a lot of scrolling, maybe none. There are several options, though, and they all can work. The only one that won't is native MS Word.

Re: Is there a Microsoft word program compatible with this tablet?

I like to read fairly narrow columns. About half the width of the columns in this forum. Newspaper columns (though, as a rule, i don't read newspapers). Therefore, i like screen rotation. My eyes can scan straight down, and i get more text before page down.

The browser will read Word docs converted to html, but it does not remember where you were, and no rotation.

FBReader has selectable fonts and sizes, remembers where you were, and does rotation, but only handles very simple html - links only within the file, for example. FBReader rocks at plain text, compressed text, palm docs, etc.

If you save to PDF, eg: using OpenOffice, then Evince remembers where you were, and does rotation, and has pretty good zoom. However, PDF doesn't let you rejustify, so if the source has long lines, you're stuck with long lines of very small characters.

If you Save as plain text, FBReader will rock, but of course all formatting is lost.

I've gone with OpenOffice -> PDF, and Evince for several documents.

I wish the web browser let you bump up the font, with justification to the screen. I also wish the browser could rotate the screen. Then you could have tables, links, images, etc., and it would still rock.

Re: Is there a Microsoft word program compatible with this tablet?

If I have bumped this thread when I shouldn't have done, I apologise but it seemed to make more sense to reply to an existing thread rather than start a new one.
Like the starter of this thread, I am to put it mildly, slightly miffed, that the Nokia 800 Internet Tablet does not have an office suite of some kind as part of the basic setup files. By an Office suite, I mean something like Open Office where huge lumps of text, with all sorts of formatting, can be written as well as read.
Why did I expect this?
How dare I expect an Office suite on a tablet?
It was easy.
I looked at the operating system, saw it was Linux based and then gazed lovingly at my Ubuntu laptop which is complete with Open office as standard and said to myself, "Ah, that's good, I'll be able to swap stuff from one to the other"

Let's be honest here.
There are 3 rules in computing.
1 ..... If it's Windows, it will crash.
2 ..... If it's a Mac, it will cost more.
3 ..... If it's Linux, it will do the job.

Rule 3 seems to have been broken.
Apologies for the rant.

So did you want a rant or some fixes :p

Will abiword not do what you want, or any of the other suggestions on this thread?

Not that I ever noticed that rule 3 was true, or that rule 2 has been true for many years. Having said that, I don't think rule 1 is particularly true either any more, but it would be against my nature to say anything nice about MS so I wont!

This is quite true. I tend to see the written word as a challenge to find another way of interpreting it to mean what I want it to mean. It has been the bane of my life for over 50 years and I see not much chance of me changing now. lol

I don't know - I am not an office kinda guy, but seeing as you have linux experience it may be worth a download to see if it was any good.
That is what I would try if I wanted an office thing.
Open office is out until there is a java around, so I guess it is the next best thing, unless you know of any office things.

Re: Is there a Microsoft word program compatible with this tablet?

@tabletrat. openoffice.org *can* happily run without java, which is needed only for some database functions. In my experience, after a someway longish boot phase, it has good performances even on slow x86 processors and 256M ram, and without java. Also the screen presentation on the 800x480 NIT screen could be not bad, as you can see exporting your X session with openoffice.org from another machine to your tablet.
Here the problem is that ooo seems very difficult to build. There is indeed an armel build (search the forum) but doesn't work as is on my n810.

In conclusion: we need a platoon of heroes to try this port.
