I found the ultimate maemo imitation, the H9 linux UMPC
I found a article about a not to shabby Umpc named the H9 and what caught my iey was that the user interface looked allmost exactly the same as maemo!
here's the link: http://www.pocketables.net/2007/02/h9_linux_umpc_p.html[/URL] let me know what you think!;) |
Re: I found the ultimate maemo imitation, the H9 linux UMPC
Cool! And it is running Maemo, but with a 20GB hard drive, 520MHz Intel PXA270 processor, an Office Suite ...

Re: I found the ultimate maemo imitation, the H9 linux UMPC
Holy crap, the fonts look horrible, and I suspect that the built-in office suites are really abiword and gnumeric. I find it hard to imagine that anyone could improve on the tablet any more than what the developer community at maemo and iTT have done thus far.

Re: I found the ultimate maemo imitation, the H9 linux UMPC
The fonts may look horrible, but at least their RSS reader applet shows twice more entries than the one from Nokia...

Re: I found the ultimate maemo imitation, the H9 linux UMPC
There were some videos floating around about this device about a year ago. The device runs Linux but it's not Maemo IIRC. They just copied parts of the look'n feel. The font is a typical non-proportional CJK font with Asian characters where Roman characters look ugly like this.

But does it play Crysis in full graphics? xD
Seriously - nothing special and interesting. Nokia still rulles the garden :) |
Re: I found the ultimate maemo imitation, the H9 linux UMPC

Doesnt look very good GUI-wise...im still sticking with Nokia ...for now :) |
Re: I found the ultimate maemo imitation, the H9 linux UMPC
there is actually one thing that the H9 has that Maemo does not, an expanded X-window system
wich actually allows you to drag, ex-out, expand and, minimise on-screen machbox windows. But i'm shure that Nokia may some day come out with a ITOS that allows you to do this kind of stuff. Untill then, i sopose you could always install Debain or KDE! |

Re: I found the ultimate maemo imitation, the H9 linux UMPC
Nokia internet tablet rules?
-> I'm sorry - the N810 does work. Not good - but ok. -> The software (maemo) is ok - but certainly not more. No usable calendar on the device - only if i hack it & install the primary OS/window manager on an external flash card (I mean the sentence in itself lets me shiver: "Install primary sys [...] on external drive." -> The keyboard.... well it's better than any on-screen keyboard... yet not more. I had a Psion (5mx) - wich was the ONLY device i've seen so far (in europe) with a keyboard that was REALY useful. A keyboard is useful, when i can use it for rapid text entry - wich is not possible with the nokia tablett - not by far. It saves some screen space & i am a little faster than with an on-screen keyboard. Yet not more. -> There is very little useful office/PIM software. Not that there are better linux devices out there yet - but the credits for halfway useful PIM/office software certainly does NOT go to nokia NOR to maemo. Don't get me wrong - it is the BEST device available to (halfway) suite my needs at the moment. But i realy expected more - i mean WAY more - as this aint the first Nokia tablett. Only HTC has compareable devices - unfortunatley they are based on windows - meaning the devices are VERY slow. I almost bought one in january - thank good i tried before i buyed. Oh - and the calendar MS delivers - well it's as useful for me as the available calenders for maemo (meaning i.e. - no color in monthly view for different categories > not useable for me) Psion had a better software + OS (epoc) & a WAY better (i mean realy WAY! better) hardware - 10 years ago (not the tech specs of today's hardware of course). Example? Did you try to do one very uncommon thing like: -> Write an sms on the N810 using a bluetooth connected NOKIA phone to send? (Was possible 10a ago on epoc) -> Sync your (nokia) mobile phone's adress book? -> Was possible on epoc -> Edit a logo/sound and upload it to your mobile? ->.... That's why i don't realy understand the enthusiasm for this dev. Nokia has by FAR enough cash to produce a top device with top software. They just don't care as it seems. Whatfor should they? As long as there are enough programmers doing Nokia's work for free.... for years and years now.... @b-man One more question: You write about installing debian. KDE is a window manager. Whereas debian is a full operating system - where u may choose to use KDE or gnome (or some others). So i wonder - when i realy can install debian - how can i use all aspects of the hardware? Do you have a link to sites about debian on N810? |
Re: I found the ultimate maemo imitation, the H9 linux UMPC
Well, i do agree that i was a litle exsentric about the "NOKIA INTERNET TABLET'S RULL!!!" statement and I'm shure thare is a LOT of better devices out thare 2beers. and speking of wich, i did not mean that when i said that you could use KDE as an allternitive to the windows maniger that it was a windows maniger. What i ment was that you can install it to use as an allternitive to maemo. I also know ware you can download Debain as well. Just go to this URL- http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=15577http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=15577

Yes, it does what it is supposed to do as far as getting on the internet, IM, and multimedia. But, it could and should do so much more! I'm in the same boat as you. It only halfway suits my needs and I also expected more as well from the NIT. Especially since we are up to tablet #3. |
