Can't connect to my LAN

Guys I need help. I have searched the forums but cant find a solution.

I just got a used 770 off of Ebay. The first thing I did was update the OS to the latest version. My problem is with trying to make a Wi Fi connection.

When I scan for networks the 770 sees my router but after selecting it as my preferred connection and starting up the browser I get an error message "Network Probelm" followed by the url I typed in. Also I am only getting one bar signal strength no matter how close I am to the router.

Anybody run into the same situation?

mschoen 2006-04-08 00:35

Hm.... You updated to what version?

pavejon 2006-04-08 00:46

Latest version
3.2005.51-13

Also on the Connection manager page the signal, received, sent, and duration lines are blank. In ad-hoc mode I get signal but I still get the "Network Problem" error message. In Infrastructure mode everything is blank.

The help file is not very helpful.

mschoen 2006-04-08 02:02

hm...check and see if you're getting an assigned IP

pavejon 2006-04-08 02:15

How do I do that?

pavejon 2006-04-08 02:19

OK I figure out how to check the IP address.

It shows:

IP Address 169.254.37.112
Netmask 255.255.0.0
Default Router 0.0.0.0

LudoVicious 2006-04-08 08:55

Ah, so you don't have a connection.
First question: did you ever made a connection before with an other wireless device to you WLAN? What did you do to connect it?

What type of WLAN do you have? b or g , do you have an encryption on it like WEP or WPA? Do you have MAC filtering configured?

The 770 can be configured to use less power to connect wirelessly (10mW or 100mW) You can find the configuration deep down in the advanced settings. This might explain the low reception.

Good luck

pavejon 2006-04-08 11:50

Right now the access point has no encryption.
My wifes laptop connects fine to the router.
b LAN.
I am using the high power seting 100w

LudoVicious 2006-04-08 12:38

That is indeed strange. It could be that the router is not distibuting it's gateway address or DNS servers. You could try to copy the IP-address, subnet mask ,router address, and DNS servers from the laptop to your 770.
(if you don't now where to find them: run 'ipconfig /all' in a command shell on the laptop) Just increase the last number of the IP-address to avoid network conflicts.

Does your router broadcasts it's SSID? If you've turned broadcasting off on the router turn it back on to see if that will help (I once had a cheap WLAN card that lost connection for that reason)

good luck

pavejon 2006-04-08 15:21

Thanks for the suggestion. How do I turn on broadcasting?

Also I just went to Compusa and bought another Nokia 770 to test. At the store I found 3 unsecured WLAN access points but when I tried to connect the exact same thing happened, I got a "Network Problem" message and it wouldn't let me browse.

Now I wonder if it is something that I am not doing correctly that is causing the problem.

I need a huge favor. Can someone post a step by step guide to connecting the 770 to a unsecured and secured WLAN? Include every setting used (basic and advanced). I have searched this forum and the web but have not found a step by step guide beyond "just hit connect and youre browsing in minutes".

I reallly think I am not doing the right steps.

LudoVicious 2006-04-08 15:53

What kind/brand router do you have? The broadcasting thing isn't an issue as you've already tried 3 other unsecured WLAN's. If you go to Control Panel->Conectivity->Connections-><Your WLAN id>->edit-> it should say WLAN ->Next->Network mode:infrastructure->security method:none->Next->Advanced->Proxies: none whatsoever -> IP Addresses: Auto-retrieve (i.e. you have DHCP enabled on the router (which is usually the default).

Does your other 770 have the same problem?

pavejon 2006-04-08 16:09

I assume you mean control panel on the 770. I just went through the settings and they are exactly the same as your post. According to the connection wizard I have full strength from my router but it will not connect. I keep getting a "network connection" error message.

I thought these things were supposed to be easy to set up.

I bought the one at CompUsa just to check out to make sure it wasn't a harware problem then I returned it.

pavejon 2006-04-08 16:15

One more thing if I use AD hoc mode the 770 connects and the recieved, sent, and duration blocks are filled in on the connection manager page but I cant surf the web. With infrastructure mode the fields are all blank.

No one has run into something similar?

I haven't seen anything like that. If I'm in online mode, I click the globe, connection manager, connect, the name found. If I want to keep it or not, I click ok or cancel. Then I get a flashing w on the globe, until it connects. At home, on my G-network I get two bars sitting next to the router, but full bars when laying in bed.

Did the one you try at compusa work at home with your home setup?? It seems that several people that have posted when they got them off ebay, got bricks or close to it. (brick meaning a unit that doesn't work).

mwiktowy 2006-04-08 18:28

What kind fo router/AP do you have? Knowing that will allow others to confirm successful pairings between 770 and that model of router and possibly give you specific configuration advise.

If you have no problem getting a connection in the store, I would guess that the router/AP is where your problem resides. Sometimes power-cycling your AP is enough to clear any confused state that it has gotten into after being on for a long time.

Thanks for the help, but I fixed my problem. I had to turn the MAC filtering off on my router and it connects fine.

How do I add my device to the MAC filter list so that I can leave the filter on?

Again, thanls for the help.

As for your router you'll have to read the docs. Each router is different. You'll need the the mac address of the 770. To get that you'll need to be root, and have ip utils installed. the command ifconfig will show the mac address next to Hware: for wlan0.

fpp 2006-04-08 22:02

The MAC address is printed on a sticker beneath the battery.

I never noticed that sticker before.

pavejon 2006-04-08 22:41

Which number is it? The MAC filter is in the 00:00:00: etc format but all of the numbers on the sticker do not have colons between them.

Top left. WLAN. When you type it in put the colons every two if needed.

pavejon 2006-04-09 03:29

Got it, thanks for the help. Since everone is so helpful how do I install programs on the device? The manual is not very helpful.

rattis 2006-04-09 10:11

www.maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog

Scroll through find the one you want. click it, hit the dl link (some aren't working right now). Save it. Then you have choices. Use the application manager under control panel and install with that. xterm, xchat, gaim, and a few others I'd use for it. Or you can take the vim install method, which is to extract the .deb you dl, and use it programs that way. Extracting means you have to flash the 770 for root.

Warning while both have benefits, both downsides and risks too. Doing it the second way may break things, to the point you may need to ship back to nokia and have them repair it. The first way, installs everything under /var/lib/install/usr/ (bin or lib) based on where the file is supposed to live. You'll either have to change to that directory or change your $PATH. There are howtos for the later on the maemo site (somewhere don't remember think in the Apps Catalog, look at the vim notes).

Regardless of the method you use for install, some programs (the cli ones anyway, not all but some) require root privileges.

I am not very proficient in Linux systems and this sounds like it is beyond my level of expertise so I'll just stick with the installed apps for now. The only downside to an "open" OS is that the only people who can take avantage of it are the ones who understand the OS and how to use it.

In Windows, Symbian, etc you just click on the program icon and it is installed, the linux way seems to be more difficult.

Actually, I know more about the command line tools, because those are the ones that interest me and sold me on getting the 770. When I saw it, I was looking for something that could be used as a wireless sniffer at work. I wanted more than a hotspot locator, and to justify the purchase it had to have PDA functions (GPE and DejaPIM take care of that). One of the command line tools is Kisment (although it's still in development). Which meant I didn't have to try and get Mini-stumbler working on another product because in my opinion Kismit is the more powerful of the two.

When I installed gaim, xchat, DejaPIM, and xterm I just let it store it where it wanted to. I used the Application Installer in the control panel and when it was done I was happy with it. The installer made new icons in the menu button. As for the command line tools. I got tired really quickly of typing out long lines of text, and with out a text editor (I don't know Joe, and the Vim-tiny package site is still down), I reinstalled the apps the dpkg -x way.

I think this is great even for people that don't understand linux, and they'll get a lot of advantage out of it, but the ones that will take it a step further will be the people that know linux. As you see on the nokia feed back page, we're considered early adopters right now. That means we'll probably be the developers and beta test freaks, but that just means we'll give the non-nix people more to play with in the future.

I have a VNC program that I want to install. What are the steps to transfer the program from my desktop to the Nokia 770?

you have to put the 770 in usb mode (www.maemo.org somewhere in the wiki). Copy the program to the rs-mcc and then after going back into regular mode, use the application installer.

If you have wifi near you, and you can use that. It's even faster. Use the web browser to go to the applications page, and then save straight to the 770.

I don't know how windows deals with the 770. I haven't tried it. Maybe when I reboot to use the windows software to send my time sheet in.

pavejon 2006-04-09 19:42

When I put the 770 in USB mode (pushing Home/power key) the device shows the USB symbol but I dont see how to transfer a file from the desktop to the 770. Where does the device show up on the desktop?

In windows, look under my computer. If its not there, you'll have to wait a while (couple of more hours) so I can test it in XP here.

pavejon 2006-04-09 20:04

Just looked in My Computer, its not there. I appreciate your help. I want to keep the 770 but if it is this hard to load programs I may have to get a VGA screen PDA with Wi Fi instead.

Ok give me a few hours. I still don't understand why don't just use the wifi connection and download that way. Didn't you say wifi was working?

pavejon 2006-04-09 20:33

I am a novice at the whole wi fi thing (as you can tell). How do I load a program through wifi?

Must have been nice to be a novice with wifi. I was never given that chance.

The easiest way...
Make your wifi connection through conneciton manager or the web browser. Go to the applications page (yes I know it's a pain to type, but you can bookmark it after the first time, you can also use the tab navagtor at the top of the page, maemo.org is easyer to type then the whole address.) using the Nokia 770. Find the program you want. Click on it's name. It'll take you down the page to the download links. Download and save it to the RS-MMC card, or the internal flash drive.

Menu button (over lapping windows on the home screen), control panel, Application Installer. Point it to the ap you dl'd with the browse button. Install. Smile. Be happy.

pavejon 2006-04-09 23:24

Got it, thanks for the help.

rattis 2006-04-10 00:26

For the record. To connect the Nokia 770 to windows. It has to be on in regular (non-usb) mode. It lets me see the rs-mmc card as a removeable hard drive. I can access it it no problem. Doen't matter if the case is on it (in standby) or if it's in use.

I have a similar problem. I can connect at my WEP protected home and work computer. However, when I pick up unprotected networks ANYWHERE else but those two locations, the 770 says I am connected but when I try to connect to a Website, I always get the dreaded "network problem" error. I know it's a common problem from reading the posts here, but, I still have not seen a good solution to this problem. Anyone figured out how to fix it?
Once again, with my own routers, I can connect ok. When I'm on the road and pick up unprotected networks, I cannot get online. HELP?!
