Any good apps for the Home screen?

Are there any good apps you can install and then have an icon to launch them from the home screen? Or, (more specifically), if I have a flash program on my n810, is there a way to make an icon to fast launch it instead of having to open it through the file manager?

Wow, thanks. I'll have to get that installed asap and try it out, but it looks very promising.

for the home screen, if you like the iPhone interface, then there is iTablet (on garage.maemo.org)

I use simple launcher too, but to each his own... and choice is good.

I'm in love with cmd-navigator

I like to keep a lot of the home screen clear so I can look at the background picture. But I do have the web shortcut linked to www.mindmeister.com, a cool memory-mapping program, and for the icon to the shortcut I picked one of the pictures that comes with the Nokia. It's a bunch of trees, and when you pick a photo that's way too big for the icon, it simply gives you a large rectangular swath of the picture that I think looks pretty cool. Especially since I'm using a background picture of a forest; the swath of forest againt the background of forest looks nicely thematic.

I got simple launcher up and running and like it a lot. I may try iTablet too, but for now I'm happy.

1 more question: If I have a swf file for a flash program saved, what would you recommend as the best way to make a shortcut for it?

I have no idea, except Googling shortcut and swf, as I just did. There seems to be discussion on the subject out there.

Would there be an applet letting me specify the command to run? I'd like to start 'gvm -a addr'.

You can use cmd-navigator or personal menu.

as for simple launcher, create a .desktop into your applicationn menu and link simple launcher to it.

I must have missed the docs , but I've spent 10 minutes trying to find how and where I can add a .desktop file, but I haven't found the slightest indication. searching .desktop op Google returns lots of results about desktop.....

Any hint?

Not sure if this is about a ".desktop file" but you install home-screen applets just like any other app. Then you go to the Home menu on the home screen and select "Select applets ... "

The spec for what constitutes a .desktop file can be found on the freedesktop.org site, but that's overkill if you just want to make an icon for your application show up in the application menu.

(Note: This assumes you have some knowledge of basic linux commands. My apologies if this is obvious.)
In an xterm, navigate to "/usr/share/applications/hildon/". There you will find a bunch of .desktop files, depending on what applications you have installed already. Pick one, copy it to a new file like "yourapp.desktop", edit this file in your favorite text editor, and change the "Name=" and "Exec=" lines to suit your application. Search this forum for "[Desktop Entry]" to find some examples, like this one I made to launch xmms.

does anyone know if there is a home screen whiteboard applet. i think it would be nice to write notes to myself on the home screen without opening an app. one button to save to a user determined place and erase would be really nice.

this would be great as i am in need of similar. except it should support both writing and typing (using n810 keyboard) as i do not always want to pullout the stylus all the time.

Couldn't you just always leave Notes open, and minimize it if you don't want to look at it?

yea, i could leave notes open, but i turn it off to change the battery pretty often. also i look at the home screen to use my other applets all the time, and it would be nice to have my note right there as a reminder.

@debudebu

You mean something like this: https://garage.maemo.org/projects/yellownotes/ ?

Unfortunatly it will not run on OS2008 :(. What I do is I use GPE Summary with the to do list. Bit long editing them but you get the info on the desktop :)
