Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

The UI is a bit unintuitive, but you just need to click on Select from installed applications.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

Can someone suggest a more intuitive way to do this? I would love to make my programs more user friendly if I could get some suggestions.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

I just tried to update from 0.8.4 to 0.8.5 from the repository but I get a "Unable to update personal-menu. Update file corrupted." message when I try to update. I'm updating on an n810 running chinook if that helps.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

I just noticed that now I can run "ssh root@localhost" with Run in Terminal checked and it works! Of course, it still spawns two terminals (and unchecking run in terminal got me zero) but now the one with the command doesn't lose it's toolbar. Thank you! You are my hero. Your programs are all super useful.

Hi, I had a similar problem and it was solved by disabling the extras-devel repository first..

Hope it helps.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

0.8.5 seems to crash frequently. is there any way to come back to 0.8.1 or 0.7.x? (0.8.4 had the same problem).

What crashes these version? Setting up? Click on certain entries? Can you provide specifics.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

just after i have upgraded the PM first to 0.8.4 and then to 0.8.5 hildon desktop has started to crash from time to time (it looks like it crashes and then restores to it default and initial state with no PM or desktop applets loaded). there were no other installs or upgrades during that time, so it seems to me that PM causes those crashes...

however, the best way to ensure that it's not PM's fault, is to try to downgrade. therefore i'll try 0.7.6, which seemed quite stable for me (sorry, i forgot that i may find all the versions on the homepage).

also, another question -- is there any CHANGES/WHATSNEW for the latest versions? i don't seem to find any log on the homepage (as well as i don't see 0.8.4 and 0.8.5 themselfs there :))

Changes up to 0.8.5 are available in the first post of this thread: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=19360

In Add command, the fact that Select from installed applications appears at the same level of the other fields makes the user think that he needs to use both. Worse, when clicking on some application, it is not immediately visible that it has been added. Adding headers is even less intuitive: it needs to be done under Add command (though a header is not a command) and there's no mention of headers there (I didn't know headers were possible until I saw screenshots).

So, I suggest that the Add button should be split into 3 buttons (I think there's enough space):
  • Add header
  • Add installed apps (with the possibility to select several applications)
  • Add user-defined command

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

One option to cure the lack of feedback would be to have the Select from installed applications just populate the other fields. I do like the three-button way, I think, though; a little more efficient, unless you edit all the Names anyway (I do, as I like short titles.), then it's about the same.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

If I run x11vnc in "view only" mode ( Mirror screen for training, capturing, ... ) as soon as I activate Personal menu the vnc server stops updating the screen... forever. I have to disconnect and reconnect for it to come back.

This does not happen with the bookmarks or stock application menu.

Brontide: That is not something I would have expected, nor do I no what to do about it.

Does anyone else have this problem? Has any other application caused something like this for someone?

Personal menu is a surefire way to get it to go crazy, but it appears as though other items have the same effect. I'm going to investigate further and see if I can pin it down.

i wonder, would it be possible to split the menu into pages, and have a left and right arrow in the bottom corners?

heh, ill take that as either a joke or a death wish...

unless the kinetic scrolling is very much optional...

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

tso: Currently if there are too many items to display on the screen there are up and down scroll arrows to show the rest. So if you have it set up for two columns, it will show what it can, then allow you to scroll to the rest.

Is this different from what you were talking about?

it is as it just scrolls like any other menu on the tablet.

what im talking about is more like paging thru a book. a whole number of icons would switch, rather then have one or two scroll into view if one hold down the arrow.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

Ah, that is available as kind of a hack. You can create a script that will switch two sets of menus when you click on a button. You could make this button and arrow, and then you will have what you are asking for (I think).

See the script here: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...0&postcount=90

This is a great app!
I just installed it yesterday and it's already made my tablet experience much faster and more efficient.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

I've just started trying to use PM and it looks like it will be very helpful.

However it seems to get "blown away" frequently, requiring a reboot to restore it.

I'll be adding or updating an app w/APP manager, APP manager will minimize and the PM is gone.

Any idea as to what's causing it to die?
/edit
For example today Canola would not fire off, so I removed it and reinstalled. When the reinstall got to the choosing directory stage personal menu was blown away. Reboot and PM is back.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

does author read this thread?

how to activate this thing to get it working in Diablo?
while installing I noticed screen with info about "activation" - I thought it will be accessible later and activation is fairly simple

but after installation I can see only Edit Personal Menu item, but I don't see Personal Menu itself running

searching "activation" flag or else didn't give me result... I even can't find this text again... damn, I tried uninstall PM and install it again just to see this text - but! I didn't get this text, uninstallation DID NOT completely remover PM, I even see all previous menu settings

I can't get this thing running
Who did this?? Why just didn't include "activation help" to description of program in Application Manager???

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

control panel > panels

uncheck "contacts", check "personal menu", tap ok.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

thnx

to author - better include this text somewhere inside programm...

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

Gourmand: What version do you have installed? These instructions appear the first time you install the program. It even opens the control panel for you if you push "OK".

Had you installed the program before? The instructions don't repeat if you are upgrading or have installed and then uninstalled.

I wish there were an easier way to activate it, but the user must decide which applets they want to enable and disable.

Gourmand 2008-11-22 21:10

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

latest version

text appeared, but I thought I will be able read it later and closed window

but later I was unable find this text

There was an update today!!!

Anybody knows whats new?

fiferboy 2008-12-12 13:23

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

The latest update fixes a problem with icon scaling. Previously the icons looked jagged at certain sizes, but now they should look nice and smooth.

Saturn 2008-12-13 13:25

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

Not sure how related it's with this update but I lost one icon (for the Password Safe) after the update and reboot.

In the past when an icon was lost it was enough to remove it from the menu and re-add it. It's not the case this time though.

Does anyone has an idea what could be wrong?

TIA

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

on that note, i added leafpad to the menu and i get the default square icon, rather then the leaf shown in the main menu...

fiferboy 2008-12-13 14:42

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Menu

Hmm, that could be due to the new scaling code. I haven't added either of those applications. Neither of them are actual maemo applications (they have been hildonized by someone, but often times things get overlooked - especially in desktop files).

I'll look into this problem.

It's the same for me too.

The difference though (if it helps) is that the leafpad icon got lost after an update of leafpad (a couple of months ago).

thereafter, in the start-up notification from personal menu there's the red X instead of the leafpad icon.
