On tablets where rotation support has been enabled, it provides buttons to, well, rotate the display. Plus, with or without rotation support installed, it combines volume and brightness status bar icons into one and provides better control of both those items.

General Antilles and sjgadsby, thanks! (Strange, but I had entered the Xterm command -- apt-get install advanced-backlight osso-software-version-rx34-unlocked
-- but there wasn't anything in the statusbar or panel until I installed it just now from the maemo.org applications page.) All is good now.

Any update on sliderotate for the latest SSU?

Sliderotate doesn't really need to be updated; if you install the rotation support yourself, instead of using sliderotate to do it, sliderotate will still do the slider-, power-, and/or home-controlled rotation.

What if I don't have sliderotate installed yet? It's a fresh reflash. Any way to just install the app part?

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

Awesome! Thanks for this. Took a few mins, but i got it done. Total noob, but you got me through it.

FYi, when i tried the script from http://sse2.net/rotate/, i got "wget: not found", so cheated (a little) and copied the main script from http://wiki.maemo.org/Rotation into notepad (i already have advanced backlight), saved to the 810 internal memory, then copy and pasted into x term. Worked a treat!

Thanks again.

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

Hello,
Finally I stop lurking and start asking. I followed the instructions from http://sse2.net/rotate/ with the difference that I did not installed "advance-backlight" because it was already installed. Now my current situation is as follows:
I can rotate the screen with the advanced-backlight panel. But the screen only rotates internally. So if you flip it 180° the screen does not change, but you have to blindly search for the right panels to remove the change. Even worse, if you flip the screen 90° some of the important panels are not on the screen anymore - so you can't press them anymore. My short time fix was to remove the battery.

Can someone please help me solving his problem? I already de-installed adv-backlight and reinstalled it once, tried to install the version from the wiki (apt-get install advanced-backlight osso-software-version-rx44-unlocked), de-installed it and re-installed advanced-backlight again. It would be perfect, if I could get the rotation running. It would be okay if I could get rid of the rotation selection in the adv.-backlight menu.

Please let me know which additional information you need for your tele-inspection.

Yours,
icke

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

Hey, this was super easy to install on my N800. I followed the instructions on http://sse2.net/rotate/ , and everything but the second file was available. Doesn't seem like it was needed. In any case, this is a great "upgrade". Canola works with it ALMOST perfectly except for when playing an audio file... then the screen gets all jacked up. Still COOL though! THANKS!

Does anybody have required *.deb packages in his own backups? Looks like http://outpo.st/ not providing them anymore. Please, share it.

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

EDIT: Please see this post below, which gives more complete instructions.

yeah you're right. Sorry.

You may be able to still use the instructions located at http://sse2.net/rotate/ with the following debs:

kernel-diablo-flasher_2.6.21-200842maemo1rotationfast_all.deb and xserver-xomap_1.3.99.0~git20070321-0osso20083801rotation_armel.deb

It has been suggested below that to take the place of downloading and installing osso-software-version-rx34-unlocked_1%3a5.2008.43-7_all.deb, you should gain root and then enter the following in xterm (for n800)

Code:

apt-get install osso-software-version-rx34-unlocked
or (for the n810)

Code:

apt-get install osso-software-version-rx44-unlocked
According to this, you may need to enable maemo-extras-devel in order to use apt-get install osso-software... But please be careful: if you enable extras-devel, make sure you disable it immediately after use apt-get install to grab osso-software-version. Otherwise, you may be fooled into using not-ready-for-prime-time debs to update your favorite apps, thereby loosing functionality and f-ing up your whole device. Seriously, be careful with extras-devel.

Note: These debs will work only until the next ssu (if that ever comes). At that point we'll need qwerty12 to vouchsafe some new debs.

bousch 2009-04-01 19:33

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

great these are the same as for the n810.

btw only the missing one is specific for n800 but I read a few posts back that it's better to use 'apt-get install osso-software-version-rx34-unlocked' (or rx44 for n810)

Thank you very much.

I'm lost... I followed the script in the wiki, then the one @ http://sse2.net/rotate/ and of course these two files were no longer maintained on the server that these command line scripts pointed to...

How do I install the debs you provided using the scripted command line method that this thread originally promoted?

Many thanks BTW...

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

OK, look. I'm no expert. I just love rotation and so had the debs and am willing to help. But you need to proceed with caution, and with the warning that if I've f-ed something up, or if you f something up along the way, I am not responsible. Let's hope that someone more knowledgable than I can come along and confirm that these instructions will work. That said, I think they *should* work. OK, let's go....

Here are instructions for a tablet running Diablo.

First:

* I take no responsibility for what happens to your tablet
* Update to the latest firmware
* Enable Extras Repository.
* Install rootsh via application manager
* Close application manager.
* Open X-Term.
* Connect your device to the power supply.

Now, type in x-term:

Code:

root
and hit enter. Wait for new prompt, and enter the following command:

Code:

apt-get install wget
Once wget installs, enter:

Code:

wget http://anonymous469.googlepages.com/kernel-diablo-flasher_ripped_from_ss.deb http://anonymous469.googlepages.com/xserver-xomap_ripped_from_sse2.deb
Once the two files download, enter :

Code:

apt-get install advanced-backlight
Once that installs, enter:

Code:

dpkg -i kernel-diablo-flasher_ripped_from_ss.deb
This will install the first deb you downloaded with the wget command.

Next, enable extras-devel repository using app manager:

Go to App Manager>Tools>App cat...>New
Cat name:extras devel
Web add: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/
Distribution:
Comp:free non-free
Disabled:[unchecked]

Go back to x-term and enter (for n800)

Code:

apt-get install osso-software-version-rx34-unlocked
or (for the n810)

Code:

apt-get install osso-software-version-rx44-unlocked
Once that installs, enter:

Code:

dpkg -i xserver-xomap_ripped_from_sse2.deb
This installs the second deb you downloaded. (I used this order of install because it matches that described at sse2.net/rotate.)

Now disable extras-devel using app manager. (This is for your own safety. Do you skip this step!)

Reboot.

I hope this works. Again, I'm no expert, but from what I can tell, this should do it (again, at least until udated ssu). Post here if there are problems. I have no idea why our rotation gurus stopped working on this. Sliderotate used to be the easiest way, but that was never updated for latest ssu (or was it?).

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

That error either means.. you have the application manager running (if so close it). Or you need to run the command as root. Install rootsh, then type in root at the terminal then do the apt-get command. Or if you've set the root password then do 'sudo apt-get install etc..'

lm2 2009-06-01 04:39

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

first gain root, then do:

apt-get install wget

say yes to questions about authentication and the like.

Looks like you forgot to gain root (which, i believe, should give you superuser privilege).

Let me know if you're also having trouble downloading the files to the right place and then navigating to that folder in xterm before you dpkg them. Some people may find that tricky, and it's actually easily avoided if I had just told people to use the wget command to download the files. In fact, I might change the instructions today to reflect that easier method. But if I don't get to it, do let me know if you stall somewhere.

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

Last night (31.may.2009) I used the wiki instructions and managed to get screen rotation working.

Things I did:

1) Installed 'rootsh' using the application manager on my Nokia N800. Then closed the application manager.

2) Opened Xterm, typed 'root' to gain superuser priviledges (the text before the cursor changed to 'Nokia-N810-43-7' which indicated I was in superuser mode)

3) Opened my browser and went to the Wiki Rotation Page.

4) Copied and pasted the relevant text (did copy, paste and 'enter' 3 times).

N.B. The big long command:
Quote:

maemo-mini-curl -o kernel-diablo-flasher_2.6.21-200842maemo1rotationfast_all.deb http://outpo.st/rotate/kernel-diablo...onfast_all.deb
maemo-mini-curl -o xserver-xomap_1.3.99.0~git20070321-0osso20083801rotation_armel.deb http://outpo.st/rotate/xserver-xomap...tion_armel.deb
dpkg -i kernel-diablo-flasher_2.6.21-200842maemo1rotationfast_all.deb xserver-xomap_1.3.99.0~git20070321-0osso20083801rotation_armel.deb
didn't work completely first time - there was an error in downloading something which then failed to install. So, i copied and pasted and ran the 'big long command' again and this time everything went fine. ;)

5) I switched the N800 on and off but even then there was no 'rotation' option available using the Advanced Battery Monitor. I sensed that the N800 wasn't rebooting properly. So i Installed 'Advanced Power Monitor' and that forced the reboot. After that, the rotation options appeared when selecting the Advanced Battery Monitor.

I can now rotate the screen. Cool. But I don't really know how useful it's going to be.

Bye, Hope the above helps a bit.
Gnam ;)

Woo-hoo! Looks like all the commands took, and I rebooted, but I guess I can't figure out just where the option is to rotate the screen at this point! I'm assuming everything is installed and ready to try, but how do I try (he asked, sheepishly).

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

Go into tablet's control panel, open "panels," hit status bar tab, and make sure that "Advanced Backlight control" is selected. Close out of panels and control panel, and you should see a new cool icon in the upper right of your tablet. click on this, and then hit the right-most sideways A. This will turn your tablet's screen to the right. To get back to normal, hit the icon again and hit the leftmost A.

Sean-o 2009-06-01 20:27

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

Urgh. No cool icon in the right top corner. I see the advanced backlight control icon, the display icon, the audio, the connection icon, and the battery icon. Looks like I missed a step somewhere, but in that last set of commands in xterm, I followed every step and each time it worked. I was hopeful! Darn it. I did reboot, which to me meant just manually shutting down the device by pressing the on/off button.

I'll go back through that last set of commands again later today, but I was pretty confident we hit all the steps, and that each one took.

lm2 2009-06-01 20:31

The icon you're looking for **IS** the advanced backlight item. The rotation controls are built into that status bar item. :)

I've opened that icon several times, and the only options are to change the brightness and the volume, and in the settings screen, the only settings are for theme (lcars, hildon and default), brightness step size, volume step size, been on volume change and allow zero backlight. No reference to screen rotation anywhere.

The only possible mis-step was when I was inputting the command for the osso software, I initially copied the version for the 800 (rx 34) instead of command for the 810, but then i followed that mis-step by using the proper command (apt-get install osso-software-version-rx44-unlocked), and it appeared to load/install (just like it did for the rx34 version), and all seems to be just peachy. But I guess not.

Re: How to rotate screen on os2008

Man, I'm sorry for dragging you into this rotation world in light of all this.

I'd suggest you try following the steps again, rebooting, and seeing what happens. NOTE: you DO NOT need to do the wget command again, since you already downloaded those those files and they will already be on your tablet where you need them to be. You probably DO NOT need to reinstall advabced backlight either, since you clearly have that.

Again, I'm very sorry this has been so laborious. I hope your accidentally installing the n800 version didn't do damage. I don't know enough to know if it did. Don't worry, a reflash would fix everything, but obviously reflashes are to be avoided.

I appreciate all of your help. It seems like I'm pretty close, and the process (though arduous) has helped me get around the machine in ways that I normally wouldn't have (at least initially). So, it's been a great learning experience, if nothing else.

I haven't noticed anything funny since I accidentally copied the wrong command (for the 800). Hopefully, it's a non-issue or that by following up with the proper command, it overwrote it or something.

Anyway, I'll keep zipping through all of the Talk pages and I'm sure it'll direct me down some new, fun courses. If you happen to think of anything else that I might've missed, I'll keep checking this thread periodically.

Thanks again for all of your help.:)
