Learning Linux from scratch

Hi Folks,

I am in the process of checking out the tutorial here:

http://linuxsurvival.com/

I was wondering if anyone had comments, suggestions, input or other alternatives

Thanks!

The problem is that half of what you learn about Linux won't be applicable to Maemo. Or even translate from from one Linux distro to another, for that matter.

This is wholly incorrect. If you truly believe this, then you haven't learned enough. While some of the GUI tools, the package management, and minuté file system structure details are different, the back ends and overall structure of the file system is the same. If you use GUI tools for system configurations, you will notice a lot of differences. However, if you edit the configurations yourself, you'll find it is _very_ similar. The point being, anything you learn on one distro will carry over in one form or another.

If you haven't looked at the page, everything gone over in the sets of tutorials will all translate over not only within Linux distros, but any POSIX-compliant system. The tutorials go over POSIX CLI commands.

...and, you can never go wrong with a book or two (or, perhaps a dozen!!) from O'Reiilly publishing.

I used to work in a bookstore back in high school. O'Reilly sent us a promotional package one time with a couple books, catalogues, a t-shirt and a baseball cap. I ended up taking home the apparel, but people always think Bill O'Reilly when they see me wearing it. <_<

Cool, I thought it would be fun to learn Linux, but I got to page 7 and got bored. By page 9 I was nodding off. To be fair, I did just eat a very large meal. Oh well, I bookmarked the site just in case I decide to come back to it later.

Thanks for the Lin(ux)k!

I, like Navi, disagree. If you learn about debian a slight bit more, you should be fine.

Infact, I got my N800 (which is Debian based afaik) and I installed Ubuntu (which IS debian based :P) and I was using ubuntu fine because of the stuff I picked up on my n800.

So... let's assume I wanted to get three books from O'Reilly Media, to gain a foothold in Linux.. How would these three selections be?

1) Linux Made Easy
2) Linux for Non-Geeks
3) Linux Cookbook, Second Edition

What else would you suggest? What books would be most helpful to me given that I'll be interacting at least initially with Maemo ?

Thanks

4) Linux in a Nutshell is a good general overview of linux

and, if you plan to spend any time in the CLI, take a look at

5) Learning the Bash Shell

and, then, just for fun

6) Learning Perl
7) sed & awk
8) Regular Expressions
