Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
I've not read all this thread, but I can say that backing up and formatting from the file manager sorts this too. I did it a while back when I noticed errors when usb mounting the internal memory on ubuntu desktop.

Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
I seem to have this memeory problem, and I tried to remove my virtual memory, but when I uncheck the checkbox and click OK, it says that it is unable to remove virtual memory.
I tried the method posted on the previous page, of rebooting and then going directly there to unmount it, but still, I get the error. I've tried everything and nothing is working. is there any other method to remove the extended virtual memory? Any help is really, very much appreciated.:( NEVER MIND. I just did a restore and it restarted my N810, when it booted, I went straight to the memory panel and unchecked the virtual memory checkbox and it worked this time. Thank god. Now its time to try the fix. Sweet, it worked. Thanks guys :D |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
Very Useful. You might also add the following two pieces of info:
1) http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...hlight=unmount contains instructions on how to get around an internal card that you can't unmount because it's locked read-only and has the virtual memory turned on. Booting with the USB cable attached does prevent the virtual memory from going active. Once you copy your files to the PC, you can use format from Windows Explorer to reformat the partition. Since this destroys the swap partition, upon reboot of the Nokia, there is no conflict and one can continue with your steps. However... 2) At least when I did it, my sizes were 2007032 and 2007??? (forgot to write the second number down). Whilst it was smaller than the 2007032, I was unwilling to take a chance that Windows somehow got me a few extra bytes and completed the process using your second method (to get the 1962236/1966072 numbers). Thanks! Schemm |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
I hit the internal memory space problem this last week after weeks of not noticing or worrying about the problem on my N810.
Noticed by Windows XP whilst copying/transferring Audio files to internal memory card as a "Sector" mismatch issue. (Cannot remember message exactly) In my case issue was quickly fixed after disabling the virtual memory, moving all precious data from my internal card then reformatted using the file manager tools of OS2008. Thanks. |

Many thanks for this

Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
Thanks for the write up. I have a quick question. I have already manually cleared my internal data card, including uninstalling the maps application and deleting maps and I've moved all visible files to my external memory card. Are there any hidden files I have to back up some other way or can I just format using File Manager as prescribed?

Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
I have weird problems with my n810. It says that my "memory is full" when I try to install more programs. After that there is error "malformed database schema -unable to open a temporary database file for storing temporary tables" and my desktop is loosin all gadgets.
Then I decide to give reboot for my n810. But it ended long reboot cycle (around 10min).. now it ended to my desktop and this looks weird, desktop setups are gone. Looks like I was noob. I manage to use all memory to applications. Still this error message is weird and this rebooting issue. If someone could say if this is normal when you run out of memory? I check that problem at first page as example shows about corrupted memory isn't issue here. |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
Firstly, many thanks for this thread - a friend linked me here (thanks Whatley!), and when I checked I found that I had the bug. I fixed it using the simple formatting method (I didn't see the bit about disabling swap, but think it was probably disabled because I had the device USB-mounted to backup my files anyway).
I'd like to offer a couple of suggestions, both of which are aimed at making the original post in this thread easier to read and follow for the concerned newcomer... The first is that you could remove the need to use the 'df' command both when checking for the bug, and verifying that you've fixed it. In both cases, the last two lines of the output from 'cat /proc/partitions' give you all the info you need - mmcblk0p1 should be smaller than mmcblk0. The second suggestion is that if the GUI formatting method works for everyone, it would be really sensible to move the alternative command-line method down into a 'post-script', after the verification stage, or even to remove it completely. Most people won't want to get their hands messy on the command line, and it'd be easier to read the main purpose of the post if that bit was separated out (and I speak as a full-time Perl developer; I'm not scared of command lines). I know you had to figure out a load of info for the CLI method, and you're probably reluctant to let that effort become 'wasted', but (imho) now that an easier method has been put forward, the CLI method really should be de-emphasised more than it has been - I'd suggest removing it entirely unless there are some cases in which the GUI method won't work. Thanks again for this post - I don't keep anything important on my tablet, but a corrupt flash disk would still have been annoying when it happened. |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
Thanks for this post, saved my stress levels :D
Firstly, what silly idea, to make the partition bigger than the device itself?! I have seen some cheap USB drives do exactly the same thing, which makes me wonder about their supplier... Anyway, for those running Linux on a computer and have some idea what they are doing, you can do all of this from your Linux box, as I did about 5 minutes ago. I considered putting up instruction, but variances in Linux distributions means it's going to be different for everyone, so I'll just list off a few notes to consider, these hints may help some windows users also: * The problem is not the format of the card, a simple reformat will not fix it. It's the partition on it, I initially had problems with running 'cfdisk' because it didn't like the partition size (bigger than the device); running 'fdisk' and deleting the first partition (command 'd 1') first fixes this. (Should some of this paragraph be in red?) * Watch out for automounters, I don't have them running, but they may go to war with you over control of the devices, you want exclusive control over the internal card. * Make sure the device is completely shut down, it seems the N810 doesn't seem to completely shutdown when the power supply is plugged in. I have found with some packages that play with system files and require a reboot do not go away when I rebooted with power in (weird?). * Booting up with the USB plugged into a PC will solve the swap memory issue, as the N810 can't mount the internal disc (and therefore can't access the swap device as it can't be un-ticked on a read-only filesystem). * My devices were backwards on the N810, internal was always mmc2, but in Linux via USB it was the first device (sdc for me), so make sure you are formatting the correct device, remove the external card if you're paranoid. * The original format of the card was FAT32, mkdosfs by default creates FAT16. Not a major issue, but you'll lose some space, running 'mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/sdc1' formats it to its original format. |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
I can confirm that the tablet must NOT be connected to external power, otherwise the attempts to format the internal card over the usb from another system, then rebooting the device and unplugging the cable will fail. Repeat this w/out external power, and it does work.

Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
I had the same swapped cards problem on N810 as reported on post #10 of this thread. I managed to fix this by: shutting down, taking the external card out, turnning the machine on and then plugging the card back.
|
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
It does not work for me. I plugged in the card while the machine is on, ther card is not recognized by the N810, it is invisible. I reboot it, it was then recognized. However, that also means the mmc1 and mmc0 continue to be swapped.

Unable to repartition Internal Memory Card
A while ago, I tried to use Penquinbait's, dual booting install tools to enable me to place KDE on my internal card. Somewhere along the line, I screwed up, as I kept getting failures and when I decided to just go back to the normal OS, I have found myself unable to repartition the internal card.
At the moment, I have 120mb available. I thought the rest was lost, but I was able to see that the partition is still there, but I am unable to access it, or remove it. I have tried to connect the USB cable and remove in Windows Manage, but while this is successful, as soo as I disconnect the cable the partition re-appears. I have also tried through X-Term to repartition the drive, using the various instructions found on these forums, but have had no luck it it 'sticking' once I reboot the tablet. It seems as though the repartition of the internal card, so that the OS can be cloned to it, has stuck and it can't be removed. Trying to boot to the MMC2, gives me a boot fail as well. I am wondering if I am missing something simple, or is there any suggestions that i can try. I can use the N810, and my external card is fine. Just that I have a useless internal card I would like to get going again. Anyhelp gratefully accepted |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
you could try something like:
Code:
sfdisk /dev/mmcblk1 << EOFIf you run Penguibait's thing again it will re-partition everything I think... Just remember.. I don't think you can load any of penguinbaits boot to SD stuff with both cards inserted.. |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
Hi,
thanks for the information. It looked like it was going to be a success, as it had seemed to repartition the internal card. However on reboot, back to the 120mb size available only.:( |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
Awesome,
Thank you! |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
yeah my memory was corrupted and I couldnt backup anything on it, I lost everything on there so could anyone zip me a file with all the stuff that should be on that internal memory card for the 810?

Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
Hello.
Thanks everyone who made this work, so far. I have got virtual memory disabled finally, by using the rebooting technique, then straight away unchecking the box. Now, I have got to back up my data. I have a question, by formatting the internal memory card, so do I exactly lose? Do I lose all my apps installed, themes, settings? I know I will lose my current files in the internal memory card, but I am going to back them up. When I format the n810, will I be able to go back in the n810, and it will be the same? Thanks :) Just don't want to lose anything. Then, I will upgrade Diablo, I haven't done so yet, because i have important files here I wanted to keep. |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
Sorry for the bump, but I can't delete any files, or move any files, so the file manager is being a great pain.
Once again, thanks for your help in this thread. |

By updating to Diablo (reflashing your N810 from Chinook) then you will lose your installed apps, settings, etc. You can make a backup using the "backup/restore" app, but I'd recommend starting fresh if you're updating from Chinook for compatibility issues. jbk |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
I see what you're getting onto, thanks :)
Okay, should make a backup of my internet memory card, and make a separate backup/restore backup to move to my computer when I install Diablo, just incase. I will also make a list of all the apps I have installed, so I can download them all again (ugh!) I've always had a problem with my application manager actually, that it would never install big applications, and always have a tiny bit left to install, but it would neve do it. I will make a backups of my entire internal memory card, then format the internet memory card. Then make a list of the apps I need, then upgrade to Diablo. |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
Just me checking in again.
I can't make a backup/restore backup on my internal memory card, because it says it's read only, so it can't make it. But the essential thing is my settings, and applications. How would I work round this? I have backup'ed my internal memory card on my computer. Thanks :) Edit - nevermind, I found an ancient 16mb mini card I could back up my stuff on. |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
I bought a unit from Amazon on 12-15-08 and it was affected by this issue. Quick fix though.

Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
Hi there,
My N810 had this problem, and I've formatted everything OK, but when I try to restore the 11mb backup from my sd card, it goes through saying its restoring, but nothing ever gets restored!!! Is there anything special I need to do with the restore function? Many thanks Vince |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
YES! I had been putting off the n810 internal memory fix for a while but, now that I've done it:
Maemo Recorder = WORKING! Map = Working! So if you're someone that had either of those apps not working you could be in luck for a fix! |
Re: N810 OWNER ALERT, is your internal memory corrupted or will it be soon?
My N810 that I got just a couple of months ago had this badly formatted internal card, so thanks for the fix.

Using PC to delete the wrong partition will fix the problem if stepped into this bug
Strongly recommend to get it fix before it is a problem.
Just got a brand new N810, forget about this bug, did a sfdisk with diffculty the 1st time, and the intSD cannot be touched any more. Everytime I tried to sfdisk it again, it crashed, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=29135, thread #18, got a RMA, almost returned back to the vendor. No sweat :) All you have to do is to remove the wrong partition. fsck, e2fsck, mke2fs, nothing work, tried for long time. Hook it up to a PC, Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer management>Disk Management>Delete partition Yah, Microsoft Windoz come to rescue my Linux tablet (tried to start a flame, come on....)! I deleted the ext2 partition, and made the whole partition a FAT32 1.87G partition all under PC and the tablet does not FUZZY any more! You have been warmed, better fix the phantom memory segment, you never know when will you step into the trap! Sure, you can SSH/Linux flasher/whatnots, the key is to delete the incomplete partition, apparantly windoz is the simplest for me. bun |

You could also just clear the flash card completely (along with that bit of information which was triggering a bug in sfdisk) before trying it again: Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mmcblk0 |
