Re: version of opera for n800

Opera was available in OS2007 and was integrated in the OS. OS2008 doesn't have any Opera and you can't install it.

Why do you need Opera for the N800 when it comes with microB built-in?

It is faster? ;)

Opera is generally a faster browser.
Also, the "right click" function (hold the stylus on a link to obtain an options menu) works ALL the time in Opera, but it doesn't work much of the time with microB. I use this feature often in order to open a link in a new window (a substitute for tabbed browsing.)
Some sites will render better in microB, such as Google Docs. You can always "switch engines" and use microB to view these sites.
I'm still using OS2007 on my N800 and I have no intention of changing.

Mmm . . . it's fun being stuck in the past.

So if the past works for you, you should still upgrade, even though it may not do what you want?

has anyone managed to port opera to os2007/n810 yet? as im really getting annooyed with mozilla/microb thing, it cant cope with google mail and google docs open at the same time at any speed.

edit;
argh i cant use the thread links in microb to subscribe as hover menus dont work

Re: version of opera for n800

Opera is closed source, so we couldn't "port" it. (Should just be a recompile, anyway, I think).

It is possible to copy the OS2007 version, and enough OS2007 libraries, to make it work. Indeed, if you wanted to set up an OS2007 chroot, it'd probably work straight off. But chroot isn't an easy path, and installing OS2007 Opera and all dependencies would probably come close to filling the device's memory.

To be honest, I don't think the average user will notice that much difference when comparing Opera to MicroB. They both render most sites without any problems, and at similar speeds too. I bet most people switching from OS2007 to OS2008 don't even realise it is a different browser.

Even if MicroB is slower than Opera, the OS2008 upgrade MicroB was bundled with increased the processor speed from 330mhz to 400mhz so that effectively wiped out any speed difference.

Google Docs doesn't render AT ALL in Opera! :) You have to use MicroB if you want to access Google Docs on the tablets.

Opera could handle Google Docs technically, but Google refuses to support the Opera browser because it has such a tiny market share.

I'm pretty sure this is the main reason Nokia switched to Mozilla/MicroB, because there are far more sites which actively support Mozilla (due to Mozilla being used in Firefox as well).

Hum... but google docs work on opera on the desktop, it may be auto masking as ff iv not looked through the overrides_downloaded.

As for copying accross the librarys, where would i go about getting these without os2007, as im using an n810 so cant even go back a version or about 4. or can a chroot env be setup to run off the internal memory card, if so are there any guides to this and still where would i get commpatible files or would it involve making a os2007 - n810 hybrid.

MicroB is due for an update anyway. It's using a fairly old build of Gecko 1.9 and there having been huge leaps and bounds in performance since MicroB's version. Hopefully this update will come with Diablo.

Yeah, FF3b4 is light years ahead of the alpha.

Newer does not necessarily equate to better....

Sure, but in this case it most certainly does.

for you...maybe

It appears there are more than a few of us that do not NEED to update to OS2008 on our N800's. I have all the programs I need/want working. I am satisfied with the speed and battery life. Way more than I was with Windows Mobile on other devices.
