That is chung for a quite small device.

Not sure on the thickness though >.<

Re: Do you believe this will ever come??!!

I was just about to post about that thing.

It's like someone took the idea that I've been talking about for months (keyboard and side-rails are stationary, screen slides and tilts) ... only instead of making it a slight variation of the N810 look and design, they gave it a somewhat art-deco-ish/steam-punk-ish look ... and made it as god-awful butt-ugly as possible.

And what's up with how thick those side rails are!? I can't imagine that's going to be comfortable for your thumbs, the way they make such a steep drop to get to the keys.

f'n ugly. It's like seeing an ugly mutant twin of your own baby :-}

And Windows & Linux!? WTF? Why do you need windows on the thing if you've got Linux?? .... ugh. I think this thing actually exceeds at being a more craptastic job of implementing a great idea than the WiBrain (split thumb keyboard UMPC).

I always liked the 80s like computer design. Just check the husky for a great looking umpc :D

That was my thoughts as well. Taking a guess that bad boy has to be over 7" long, nearly 4" wide, and more than 1.5" thick. It can't even pretend to fit into a pocket.

Hmmm.... I like it. Then again, I like the WiBrain, too.

The price + specs are unbeatable; One or the other (or both) will surely suffer.

I think the picture Engadget has is an early prototype or proof of concept because if you go to the site http://www.miubit.com/ it looks a lot better.

Re: Do you believe this will ever come??!!

If it is just fixed at $500, why would you need a contract? I would think it would be fine with a pay-as-you-go (if you wanted to use it).

I think it would be too big to carry round (and you would need a bag to put it in so you didn't scare small children with it!)

Well the iPhone is also $500 and you still have to pay for a contract...

Re: Do you believe this will ever come??!!

Miu HDPC:
163 mm = 6.42 in
67 mm = 2.64 in
24.5 mm = 0.965 in
387 g = 0.853 lb = 13.7 oz

N800:
144 mm = 5.67 in
75 mm = 2.95 in
18 mm = 0.71 in
206 g = 0.454 lb = 7.3 oz

So it's 0.31" narrower, 0.75" longer, 0.25" thicker, and weighs almost 2x as much. It'd fit my pockets just fine. (Why all these pocket comments? I really do not understand what sort of pockets people have that they claim can't fit this, the N800, or similar sized devices...)

I really like this. Note that it has (on the right) a 4-way d-nub, surrounded by buttons. On the left, it's got big fat up/down buttons, with small left/right ones as well. (Probably targeted at scrolling/paging.) Gaming ahoy!

The only really annoying bit is the need to unfold it to use the main display. I'm no clamshell hater, but I've been spoiled by the N800. This would be greatly alleviated if the outside screen is accessible as a normal display, so you could run apps (with reduced resolution) from the phone position.
But even without that, this looks like a serious Pandora competitor to me.

Oh, and anyone notice that weight and "7-hour" life is with the standard 4-cell battery. And they speak of a 6-cell battery available, for about "10 hours" by my extrapolation (which I suspect comes out closer to 8 hours in real life).

That's true, but those are all computer renderings. Looking at them carefully, I'm fairly convinced that they're a gross simplification of reality; just look at how the top is completely smooth, even in areas that you wouldn't expect it to be. However, if the final device looks as good as the renderings, then I agree that it doesn't look too bad (although IMHO the green color they chose sucks).

The phone keypad on the computer renderings sucks, though. Nokia tried something similar (rotary style numbers), and most people hated it.

Looks pretty much the same to me -- in fact, if their illustration is in scale (I can't tell if there's text there that says it's not, because I don't read that language), then the device is even bulkier than we originally thought (because scale in the photos would indicate that it has approximately the same mass as the Earth). ;)

Whoops, missed out the link in the original post - and a couple of the pics show it in tablet mode.

While I agree, I also think the advantage to this is that the screen won't be scratched if you keep it in your pocket without a case. I always have my N810 in its case when it's in my pocket (and 99% of the time I'm not using it too) since I don't want the screen getting smudged and scratched.

tabletrat 2008-03-24 20:58

Re: Do you believe this will ever come??!!

I am the opposite, in that the n800 was unappealing to me as it didn't have the metal cover of the n770. I would hate to think how the n800 would have survived the abuse the 770 has had.

Benson 2008-03-24 21:19

Re: Do you believe this will ever come??!!

But you didn't have to flip the metal cover everytime you used it, right? You could leave it sitting on your desk with the cover off or reversed, and pick it up and use it in handy slate form-factor. The bulk of an open clamshell gets in the way, so I'm pretty sure I would always be closing it. To me, a slide-on cover is good; ditching the convenience of one-hand use, sitting flat on a table, and the like is not.

tabletrat 2008-03-24 21:50

Re: Do you believe this will ever come??!!

True, if it was on the desk I wouldn't flip the cover around (although I always put the cover on when I am not using it for a while).
Didn't I see in one of those photos that the screen rotates around over the keyboard?

Yeah, it does look a lot less retro on their site. BUT ... it still has the hellishly thick side rails.

If they make a version that is thinner, and doesn't have windows on it ... maybe I'll consider it.

Pretty sure not; all I saw was that it closes to a phone form-factor, and then you can use the external display.
If it would, I'd be so happy with it.

It's available with either Windows or some-wierdly-named-distro Linux. And they ain't so thick; half-way through one inch is only a half inch, and they're no more than that. Don't think it'll be an issue. When I hold my N800 for two-thumb tapping on the on-screen keyboard, my thumbs are up at a high enough angle to clear that easily.

On that picture a few posts up, isn't that what the image on the top right shows? I must admit I can't work out if it is a single screen or a dual sided. I am guessing it is supposed to be a single screen that can be the keyboard or a plain screen, but the bezel is different in each image for it to be the same screen. I am guessing this is because it is just a photoshop job, and I admit it is hard to reconcile the images from the website with the image of the real device!

i suspect that they are going for a similar setup to the htc shift, but with a choice of windows ce or some kind of linux distro on the "phone" side of the device.

and im one of those people that like this much more then the minimalism that goes for "high fashion" these days.

but i fear that just like some of samsungs most interesting mobile products, this will not show up outside of south korea...

oh, and about that phone stuff check the video:

If it's true that it's either Windows or Linux, then I can live with that. Though, I wonder what their Linux is based on. It'll be interesting to see.

As for the thick side rails... maybe you're right. It just seems oddly thick. But I suppose they might act like "rests" for the base of your thumb (like a keyboard wrist rest pad). Again, just have to wait and see.

From what I know of Qplus Linux, it's specifically an embedded OS, which leads me to believe that only XP is the main OS for this thing. Wince or Qplus are for the embedded part, probably only available on the small screen.

I love the name 'The ugly sofa' - suits it so well!

In a way it is so ugly that it may be really appealing. It would certainly get noticed!
