unrar on x-terminal

I am trying to unrar a file using x-terminal, but the problem is I don't know how to use x-terminal. I have to extract it in the same folder. It would be really appreciated if someone could help.
p.s, I have the unrar application installed on the tablet (using xarchiver). Its on os2008.

Thanks :)

Re: unrar on x-terminal

1.) Start up xterm.
2.) Change to the directory with the rar file in it. ("cd /home/user/MyDocs/" or some such. If you don't know where it is, do a "find / -name [tar file name]" to find it.)
3.) Type "tar xvf [tar file name]".

That should do it.

If you already have unrar installed, then it should just be:
Code:

unrar x filename.rar

Considering that your filename could be anything.. and your path be anywhere.. this is unlikely.

What I can tell you is that there is "unrar" and "p7zip" in Extras-Devel (standard kill your kitten warning applies), both of which will unrar a file - but are both command line only applications.

The suggestion above (danguyf) uses Tar and is not for RAR files.. different compression.

With unrar you can unrar a file with:

Code:

unrar x filename.rar
With p7zip it's:

Code:

7zr e filename.rar
or
7zr x filename.rar

(I believe, haven't used p7zip yet).

You'll need to set up and enable the extras-testing repository and have the rootsh package installed. Then run (in X Terminal):
Code:

sudo gainroot
apt-get install unrar

If you're not already using the extras-testing repository (with an awareness of the potential issues involved) then you should immediately disable/delete the repository afterwards.

/home/user # apt-get install unrar
Reading package lists... Done

Package unrar is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

this is what i get what to do now?

That's odd - according to this it's in extras-testing. You may need to add the extras-devel repository as well then.

Yes.. but you aren't going to find a menu item for it.. it's command line only.

Yes, it should be working now. Don't forget to exit out of root mode before unpacking the archive, and disable the -testing and -devel repositories unless you're prepared to accept the risks of using them.

There's no other way to do it!

First you need to install unara:

sudo gainroot
apt-get install unrar

then cd to the directory you want

unrar e *name of file*.rar

Re: unrar on x-terminal

cheers for the reply bro, but what does CD to the directory actually mean? and how do i do that?
its at that point where i usually just quit and give up with xterm!

Re: unrar on x-terminal

and the first part gave me couldnt find package, then could not get lock then could not unlock administration directory???????
so i still dont even have unzip installed!
is there no one making apps for the n900 cos i could of unzipped it in 2mins using my old n97, here ive already wasted 4hours on it!
very confused here?

Re: unrar on x-terminal

Make sure ALL applications are closed AND you are connected to the internet.

Then type the command - you need to be root user to do this.

cd means Change Directory, just like in Windows you have C:\Program Files etc. etc. in Linux you have /etc, /usr, /home/user (forward slash instead of 'C:\'), so you need to find where you downloaded the file

the internal memory is /home/user/MyDocs (this is 'N900' in File manager)
The memory card is /media/mmc1/

Re: unrar on x-terminal

Download Rar file to your Documents directory. Make sure you have rootsh installed from the repositories.

Code:

sudo gainroot
apt-get install unrar
cd /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/
unrar e *.rar

if you type 'ls' it will list the files in current folder, make SURE the .rar file is in the folder before you type unrar.

Good to here, don't continue to be a wally and use the xterm as much as you can! :p:p

After a short while you'll realise why the N900 is so much better than any other phone out there.

It doesn't work. it says "Couldn' t find package unrar".

Edit: It worked. I had to enable extra-devel catalogue. Thanks.

You have to type it in again - you can tell the difference because the command line will start with a '#' in root mode, and with a '$' in user mode (by default anyway).

yhx, i reallly wanted to be sure of when i was in root mode (the dangerous stuff) and when i was in regular terminal access. i am super careful either way but its good to be aware
