unrar on x-terminal
I am trying to unrar a file using x-terminal, but the problem is I don't know how to use x-terminal. I have to extract it in the same folder. It would be really appreciated if someone could help.
p.s, I have the unrar application installed on the tablet (using xarchiver). Its on os2008. Thanks :) |
Re: unrar on x-terminal
1.) Start up xterm.
2.) Change to the directory with the rar file in it. ("cd /home/user/MyDocs/" or some such. If you don't know where it is, do a "find / -name [tar file name]" to find it.) 3.) Type "tar xvf [tar file name]". That should do it. |

What I can tell you is that there is "unrar" and "p7zip" in Extras-Devel (standard kill your kitten warning applies), both of which will unrar a file - but are both command line only applications. The suggestion above (danguyf) uses Tar and is not for RAR files.. different compression. With unrar you can unrar a file with: Code:
unrar x filename.rarCode:
7zr e filename.rar |

Yes.. but you aren't going to find a menu item for it.. it's command line only.

Re: unrar on x-terminal
can anyone help me unrar a file i have on mass memory, none of the other info applies to me cos i dont use xterm, way too technical for me that! the command line app mentioned earlier is not in the repos anymore anyway, i installed the unzip via filemanager app instead but that dont work, im really conserned bout the lack of being able to do this using a simple app that is already available for most other phones

First you need to install unara: sudo gainroot apt-get install unrar then cd to the directory you want unrar e *name of file*.rar |
Re: unrar on x-terminal
cheers for the reply bro, but what does CD to the directory actually mean? and how do i do that?
its at that point where i usually just quit and give up with xterm! |
Re: unrar on x-terminal
and the first part gave me couldnt find package, then could not get lock then could not unlock administration directory???????
so i still dont even have unzip installed! is there no one making apps for the n900 cos i could of unzipped it in 2mins using my old n97, here ive already wasted 4hours on it! very confused here? |
Re: unrar on x-terminal
Make sure ALL applications are closed AND you are connected to the internet.
Then type the command - you need to be root user to do this. cd means Change Directory, just like in Windows you have C:\Program Files etc. etc. in Linux you have /etc, /usr, /home/user (forward slash instead of 'C:\'), so you need to find where you downloaded the file the internal memory is /home/user/MyDocs (this is 'N900' in File manager) The memory card is /media/mmc1/ |
Re: unrar on x-terminal
got it bro, still cant unrar tho, i just get
cannot open rar no files to extract tried redownloading the rar 3 times @ 400mb a pop! same error with all ov them, normally id use my pc for easy stuff like this but my motherboard died lastnight so n900 is my only solution for a while, and im getting nowhere with it! |
Re: unrar on x-terminal
Download Rar file to your Documents directory. Make sure you have rootsh installed from the repositories.
Code:
sudo gainroot |

After a short while you'll realise why the N900 is so much better than any other phone out there. |
