Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

why not just download Full RedAlert for windows?
and play online with others? it sounds alot easier than this.
http://n3trunn3r.red-alert.net/
OR
Installing RA on Linux

1.Install WINE. (Get WINE here http://ra57.cnc-comm.com/download.php?view.45 )

2. Mount A Red alert CD as root and copy the install folder to your Wine "Windows" directory, then rename the folder to anything you like.

3. Change the modes of the files in the Red alert directory so you can read/write to them (chmod +w).

4.Start the game by typing in your console: "wine -winver win95 /mnt/windows/westwood/redalert/ra95.exe"

bc all that doesn't happen on my n800.

It is not a PDA, inform yourself before you commit to buy or you will be disappointed.

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

I made an autorunnable iso of this where you just drop the iso on mmc and play it like a rom. Just another option if you dont want to mess with moving files.

It should have full game ready to run.. but i cant immediately tell a difference from demo data.

You can grab the iso here and put in 'iso-images' directory on mmc card :
http://wardenclyffetower.com/MaemoFi...so/other-devs/

Then install the first two debs (under 1meg) from this thread (to enable use of any/all the autorunnable isos) :
http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=20809

Then using personal menu or xterm just run :
isorun1 linman-freera.iso (if you put it on mmc1), or
isorun2 linman-freera.iso (if you put it on mmc2)

Thanks for game, let me know if i missed anything

Any chance this will work on a 770??

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

i could use a bit of advice, i have gone from step 1 till just about the end. i have downloaded all the necessary files and i know this because the game does work, the problem is that in the first mission (demo or real game not sure), you hear ''reinforcements have arrived'', over and over with these weird small red blocks in the top. everytime it says that phrase a few more blocks appear. eventually freezing up. i went over through xterminal checking what is the steps to follow and when you are telling xterminal to go into your file and retrieve the full game or demo everytime it says ''short read'' and thats it. i thought i followed the instructions right so i just don't know what to try next. please help me with this.

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

Yes, I did also experience the same problem.
Maybe it is because of demo files, I will try with the original files.
Also is "save" available?
By the way, thanks OP for porting this game.

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

Installed on N770 os 2006. The initial screen loads, but then the whole thing dies. Launching from xtem as root produces the following...

Binpath = .
Screen is in system memory
Succes at opening mission.ini
Screen is in system memory
Succes at opening mission.ini
Count down = cashdn1.aud
Error: Unable to load mission.ini file!
Cache entry = 0
Loading pallete: SNOW
Start create button surfaces
End create button surfaces
Fatal signal: Segmetation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)
Segmentation fault

Any ideas?

I guess I could try it on OS2007HE or OS2008HE.

Suggestions???

@quicksilver: I'll try to get the porter to answer. :)

@knchris: Probably won't work on OS2006 and probably will be too slow on 770 anyway.

Sad. Would have been fun. I might install 2007HE sometime and try it just to see. Just out of curiosity, how is performance on the n800 or n810?

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

About 17fps, nothing too fast, but playable ;)

Never tried it on 770 i think.

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

Stupid question, and I didn't see it mentioned, but I've got an old rules.ini file that I always used to play with when playing the old C&C:RA that I loved to use. Would I be able to copy that over and use that for skirmish mode? Or do I need to hack the updated one you're using?

Oh yeah, and do the original expansion maps work too? I've got a bunch of really great expansion maps that were 3rd party add-ins and not Westwood originals.

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

Hi,

I installed this game last night and found it quite playable with the following caveats.

- I had to remove the 4 .ini files from the data/mix directory before I could get out of demo mode and into the full game mode.
- The full game mode doesn't seem to work the same way as the walk through indicates and as I vaguely remember playing years ago. Ex: The first Allied mission you are supposed to rescue two scientists and a helicopter is supposed to land to pick them up. As far as I can tell, the helicopter was present at the beginning of the mission and would not land although I could move it around. The only way I got the game to recognize the end of the level was to destroy all enemy structures.
- Saving doesn't work but after I completed the first level, the game started me on the 2nd level when I ran it.
- This game eats the battery, seriously.

I'm guessing multiplayer would be quite nice as there is no story line for the engine to follow.

Frank

It eats battery because it's CPU intensive.

Great scott! If they're giving away RA for free, then I doubt it would be too hard to either A) ask them to make a port for Maemo, or B) get the source code to speed up porting. :)

Bundyo 2008-09-01 04:48

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

It will, trust me - at least the port part :)

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

Well I used to love playing RA day in and day out. I wonder if this will allow me to play RA now with greater ease.

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

This is awesome. I've got it working in demo mode but I'm unable to install my RA discs because of being on a 64bit OS.

I can't seem to get the tap to move very well but other than that it's awesome.

I was poking through the files and theres some FreeCnC left in it, any chance it'd be easily modifiable to change it to that too?

Lord Raiden 2009-05-22 00:37

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

Just a dumb question, but has this project died? The last update was from early 2008. I'm hoping that more work can be done on this, and that the release of RA1 for free hasn't killed the project. If the original developer has dropped it, could someone consider restarting it? I'd love to see this get finished, as I love the original game.

On a side note, EA changed their site, so you gotta do some google diving to find the page again that has the free RA iso's on it.

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

linman doesn't show up here anymore, so probably. I think I have the modified sources here if someone wants to start from there. I also have access to the garage project so I can upload them.

Ah, bummer. Yeah, it'd be awesome if he were to continue working on this. I was really looking forward to that. :(

Re: Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

1) Download these files, from first post:
freera-bin 0.1-2
freera-data.tgz

!) Wait for download to complete (again thumb twidling applicable depending on your connection).
MAKE SURE THE DOWNLOAD COMPLETES PROPERLY. If you wait too long or there's a problem and you only get half the file, it WON'T WORK.

2) Become root - Launch X-Terminal on your N900 and type in:
sudo gainroot
this command required "rootsh" package (install with app manager)

3) Install freera-bin-0.1-2_armel.deb on N900:
dpkg -i freera-bin-0.1-2_armel.deb
will copy freera-bin-0.1-2_armel.deb file to your N900 :D (mass storage mode, or scp client)

4) When asked where to install, choose "Root"

5)
It will come up and say that it's installed successfully. If you get an error or it says failed, check your tablet for enough free space on root (df command) (needs a few MBs)

6) make freera directory in /home/
mkdir /home/freera

7)
Symlink /home/freera to /usr/share/games/freera
ln -s /home/freera /usr/share/games/freera

8) Copy ra3_1.12.game and data directory from freera-data.tgz to /home/freera

9) Gain Permissions:
chmod +x /home/freera/freera

10) Start game
/home/freera/freera -w 800 -h 480 -fullscreen
