How would you install this manually? Do I just follow the same instructions for OS2008 on the n900?

Re: [OS2008] Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

I just compiled Open Red Alert http://code.google.com/p/openredalert/ but it's really unplayable.
I can deploy first unit, but the sidebar menu does not work, I cannot produce any more units. And when I tried changing map display options the app crashed.

Not worth the effort.
But... If someone's interested: http://github.com/smokku/ora

N900 already have Open RA, and it's pretty stable http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjizBs6ebKg

OK. I found the problem. "Refactoring to use strings." (r537 SVN upwards) breaks the sidebar.
I compiled r534 and it works.

Autobuilder is broken and I cannot upload to Extras, so you will find Open Red Alert for Fremantle here: http://github.com/smokku/ora/downloads

I hate to ask more questions of you (seems everything I like... you've made!). Did a search in xterm for radata and freera and didn't find anything.. where do I put the game files? Pretty keen to try this.

Try reading /usr/share/games/openredalert/data/mix/README :)

Ah... excellent! If I had of thought to search for openredalert I would certainly have stumbled across that... sorry for the ignorance :D Will get back to you with feedback (and issues) asap if you want it.

I've reuploaded the package with one that stores MIX files in MyDocs/Games/RedAlert directory.

HINT: dpkg -L openredalert

It's a bit hard to play with conventional controls on N900.
I am wondering how would I change it.

Placing buildings: first click places marker, second click builds
Canceling production: ?
Scrolling map: ?

I can't find my old CDs anywhere so I'm redownloading. Might have a better input after I've tried it.. but how hard would it be to simulate a right click as the proximity sensor being triggered + a tap? Is that practical at all?

Re: [OS2008] Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

I've tried it with Widelands port.
It's cumbersome to hold device in one hand constantly covering/uncovering the sensor.
And what about left-handed people?

I've been racking my brain on this the last few hours... even tried a few Google searches. My only other thoughts would be accelerometer incorporation for map scrolling or even tilting and tapping. I'm sure there is a right solution for this... it just has to be found.

EDIT: Finally finished downloading the files. Placed them at MyDocs/Games/RedAlert folder as MAIN.MIX, INSTALL.MIX and RUSSIAN.MIX. When running the game it still simply exited to desktop. I tried to copy the files to /usr/share/games/openredalert/data/mix but I was getting disk full errors. So I've created a symlink to the files in MyDocs at the mix location.. and it appears to work!

Attempting to start a new game brings up a black screen which I can only assume is my fault. Skirmish games start fine but once in it's pretty much unplayable as I don't know how to move my unit :P

Also made you up a quick icon for it. Edited out one I got of Google images and (hopefully) made a transparent background. No idea what dimensions are expected though.

Final point: Don't know if this is the same for everyone, but my touch screen has a dead zone at the top and the Options tab is impossible to tap.

Re: [OS2008] Command and Conquer - Red Alert - 1

I'm thinking of adding thin buttons at the screen borders and corners for map scrolling.
How does minimap work in original C&C? It does not seem to work at all in ORA.

The app already has an icon. If it does not show just reboot.

What about using directional buttons for scrolling the map? Just like the other version.

I lol'd. I still think the accelerometer could be a practical scrolling method.. Just don't make it overly sensitive.

That said I think unit movement needs to be adressed first.. From what I can tell its only shortcoming is that a click is misinterpreted as a drag... perhap changing the sensitivy on this would work.

Just watch a clip of someone playing starcraft on a 6" tablet and a practical approach for them was a big move button you hit before tapping.

In Widelands port I added a patch that drags for less than 5px is interpretted as click too.
I have no problems clicking with stylus, but thanks for the report.

The *crafts approach of separate commands buttons works, but isn't it out of place in C&C games? These are more quick-mass-production oriented than manuver oriented I think.

There are some news, but probably not the kind you wanted to hear. ;)
I am working on an RTS game for tablet devices. Using the experience from my ports of Bos Wars, OpenDune, OpenRedAlert and Globulation2.
So, this means I am not working on the ports themselves anymore.

PS. I'm open to design ideas and there are vacancies in the product team. :)

Hey B3at, just follow the instructions on the first post and google for anything you don't know. I got this running on my n900 today and it works sweet at 100% speed.
