Well, I'll be able to tell you all how well Nokia's Wimax implementation works with Rogers Portable Internet... when I buy the NIT v5... 9 months after it has been introduced... so hopefully someone else tests it, because you may be waiting a while for me...

If anyone finds a little battery-powered bluetooth / USB Wimax modem, give me the heads-up, OK? I'd be willing to take something like that for a spin.

It doesn't work here on the UBC campus. I've tried walking around campus with my N800 and I constantly have to reconnect as I move into the radius of a new AP. It's weird; the SSID of all of the APs is the same but as I move between APs, the new AP doesn't want to talk with my N800. I have to re-authenticate each time.

Although basic WiFI isn't designed for easy roaming it works if the new AP you hit has the same SSID, different channel, and same DHCP server. I have 3 APs over a few acres and handoff works very well even while on a SIP call. I wasn't expecting to stay on a SIP call but it worked. Other apps like internet radio with the large buffer don't even give a click or any indication of the handoff.

A large campus might and likely segments the network and doesn't account for WiFI handoff. However the N8x has one of the better WiFI setups I've used. Mileage may vary though.

Hmmm.... guess they broke it. There's more than just matching SSID required, but I don't remember what all. Apparently, neither did they.

I haven't used an adapter for few months, but iirc it doesn't connect to those, instead there is a bunch of pins in the battery area. The serial port should be in the blue circle.
Regarding the red one, i've never used, but i wouldn't be surprised if it isn't available in production units. Lots of test points disappear while the board goes through successive iterations of design.
Or it could easily be a peephole on the wifi or gps serial ports.
And, to close the pads discussion, i was referring to the 2 pairs of _square_ pads that are in the upper area. one of them is intersecting the red circle. Those are the speakers.

Hmm. I may have to revisit the fixture and verify that. I might get to look at one tomorrow. You may be right, igor, but I could have sworn contact was made with that separate area...

If I had to guess, I'd say that Panel Flash in the factory flashes via USB on the 4 pins circled in blue for performance reasons, and most Nokia employees flash their test units with the pins in green using a battery-compartment flash adapter. (This is based on an earlier post by someone saying that when the IT goes into host mode, one of the 4 pins goes to 5V, implying that they're USB headers.)

I know this was done with at least some past Symbian phones.

it'd be nice if Nokia could offer some sort of upgrade path for n810-non-wimax owners, even if it meant sending it in to have the case-back swapped out and a module soldered in.

They do offer "some sort" of upgrade path.

Send them $475. Get an N810 WiMAX Edition. Do whatever you want with your existing NIT.

There you go. That's _some_sort_ of upgrade path (full price with no value trade-in).

Contrary to some expectations, I don't think N810 prices will fall much immediately, so you shouldn't come out far behind; not like the N800->N810 jump, because demand for the new one is limited by network deployment.
