EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hieroglyphs Explained)

1 Attachment(s)
Update 6/11 : New 0.4.1 rev 28 release with configuration improvements. Added support for my isomount (isomount, isorun, isodrop). Added web/maemo help button in vertical button bar showing project links for configured apps. Changed mplayer assoc for slightly better performance, added shims for dbus invoking many maemo apps... since this is straight bus, alot should work on both chinook and bora.

Download here :
OS 2008
OS 2007

The other thread i made on emelfm2 is really more of a question so i'll try to add some some method to the madness here.

Key Bindings :
Menu Key : Context Menu
ZoomOut : Toggle Left Pane only and split
ZoomIn : Toggle Right Pane only and split
Fullscreen : Toggles Fullscreen (previous icon now does what author intended-- maximize output).

For a rather involved Shockwave flash demo you can view the link below. (Dont try to follow every click... just try to see some of the ways it can be used) Best viewed on Desktop (maemo browser flash runs low on memory with this)

EmelFM2 rules! :D

I started using it the week I received my N800. Thanks for the flash animation showing how to do things with it. Wow ... I didn't know there was a contextual menu even after 3 months of using it! :o

Hi,

Thx for the great program.

One little problem I've got in a recent update or change of settings by me is that the trash bin has been replaced by a new icon and expects a trash folder to be available.

Do you know how to revert back to the original configuration?

TIA

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

Thanks, one thing it has is that its powerful... takes more time to plan your clicks but those clicks are powerful :)

Emelfm2 uses two sets of mostly identical configuration files (one for user and one for root) in :

/home/user/.config/emelfm2 directory (and)
/root/.config/emelfm2 directory

You can try deleting those directories and reinstall emelfm2 (my installer puts them there). Maybe delete from another program (like xterm or ssh) since emelfm2 saves config on exit. Maybe thats a good idea for a script file in future version (like an emel-reset script)

Major co-sign! One of my favorite apps out there, it's #2 in my personal menu right after xterm. More than anything EmelFM2 helps me to learn the linux file system.

I'm no where near an expert, but I find EmelFM2 invaluable!

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

Thank you very much for emelFM2 & this tut but I would like to ask if you have any older versions stored?

- The trash icon is incredibly annoying. I run emelfm as root so it works. On a device, when newly flashed, the free space is about 148MB, a trash isn't viable. The older versions didn't have Trash (thankfully). I even tried renaming _Trash to _Delete to no avail.

- Your older configs actually showed options to run programs for the internet tablet. On a jpg, I would get quiver, mirage etc but now I get "gview, GQView, gimp, inkscape...". As much as I wish we had those programs, we don't :(

Tested on an upgrade from the older version and on a newly flashed device.

Brilliant - I completely missed EmelFM2 first time round as I had no idea what it did.

Gonna install it now!

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

qwerty, saturn : your problem is likely that my language hack didn't work.

so you could go into /home/user/.config/emelfm2, and rename the config-enUS to your language code.

i had tried forcing locale to enUS so that everyone would use that file... but it didnt work apparently. root mode works because that uses langs differently.

i just found out how to change my device locale and i see this happening and emel is not useful like this, so i'll try to fix today

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

Hi, thx for looking into this.

Code:

~/.config/emelfm2 $ ls -all
total 60
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root  4096 2008-03-29 02:55 .
drwx------ 4 user users  4096 2008-03-29 02:44 ..
-rw------- 1 user users  1441 2008-03-29 02:55 cache
-rw------- 1 user users 23592 2008-03-29 02:55 config-en_GB
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root root  24522 2008-02-07 03:04 config-en_US

So, I deleted the %GB file and replaced it by renaming the %US file:
Code:

/home/user/.config/emelfm2 # rm config-en_GB
/home/user/.config/emelfm2 # mv config-en_US config-en_GB

The trash icon has reappeared and works as advertised ;)

thanks again.

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

I've updated emelfm2 packages to fix improper configuration for devices with non-English(US) locales.

Sorry, i thought i fixed this a long time ago, but my fix conflicted with root mode theming workaround.

I left the version the same (1.2.5) since its identical otherwise :
http://wardenclyffetower.com/MaemoFiles/emelfm2/

If you upgrade via my repo, be sure to refresh app list since package checksum/hash has changed.

English(US) users do not need to reinstall.

Let me know if you still have issues.

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

This is a little off-topic but i was wondering how i can transfer the pak files frome my sdlquake game to my maqii port so i can play games on my maqii port but when i transfered the files using emelfm2 and try to open my maqii application and try to open it, the file was grayed out and i can't run it. is there a way to bypass this problem?

p.s. The reason i am asking you pipeline, is because i opened the "README" file in the sdlquake directory and it said "Make any inquiries/requests to user pipeline on the InternetTabletTalk forums" and i had a question so i asked you:D.

pipeline 2008-03-29 22:26

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

more off topic than you think :)

I did not build the maqii game, and its totally separate data files. SDLQuake is Quake1 and Maqii is Quake2... the sequel.

Data files wont work between them. Do you own quake2?

I did repackage his quetoo port (before it was renamed maqii) and this had demo data levels in it. If you dont own the full game you can download that quetoo-repack deb onto mmc and use emelfm2 to extract it to get data files (dont install it its older version). Edit the quetoo.desktop in apps/hildon (bookmarked dir) and change part where it says base1 to demo1 then run maqii and point to extracted baseq2.

I'VE successfuly transfer the data to the /usr/share/maqii/quake2/baseq2 but that quake.desktop file is'nt there. Instead there is a maqii.desktop file and it doesn't contain that thing i had to edit. is there something i could do differently?

here's some pictures to show you what's going on:

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

oh yea, thats right he's got a launcher now.

hmm... actually i think the version that would work best for you is the previous release here :
http://www2.lut.fi/~thietan1/repo/ar...nook_armel.deb

The only thing you lose is the level picker but the demo levels are all different anyways so no help.

So uninstall maqii, install that then edit (as root) the two desktops to manually change :
- base1 to demo1
- manually change basedir to the location of your basedir

in /usr/share/applications/hildon/quetoo_load.desktop and
/usr/share/applications/hildon/quetoo_new.desktop

Sorry he doesnt support demo levels, thats just a workaround i found

b-man 2008-03-30 03:38

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

I tryed that but i got the following eror while testsing it in x-terminal-

~ $ quetoo
Quetoo 0.5.0
Added pakfile /usr/share/quetoo/quake2/baseq2/pak5.pak(120 files)
using /home/user/.quake2/baseq2/ for writing
couldn't exec quetoo.cfg
Console initialized.

------- sound initialization -------
loading snd_alsa.so sound driver
load /usr/lib/quetoo/snd_alsa.so failed: /usr/lib/quetoo/snd_alsa.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

------- video initialization -------
loading vid_softsdl.so video driver, ok
recursive shutdown
Error: Couldn't load pics/colormap.pcx

As you can see it aubviosly loaded the pak file but failed to exicute.
Is there a way of fixing this problem?
(note) - I used xarchiver to unpack the zip file, extract it into mmc1 and then as root, copied the files into the directory.

I'd like to try emelfm2 (N800, OS2007) but it doesn't start: complains about lack of libpangocairo . I found this should be part of pango package but can't find it. Link please?

- package installed so theoretically it should be in system but cannot find it.

pipeline 2008-03-30 13:09

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

vvaz : did you install bora (os2007) version?

b-man : you put the wrong pak file and you put in wrong place. Forget pak5 thats addon for full quake2. What you want is to highlight the quetoo-r2r-0.5.0-6zs.chinook.deb and then hit menu key (one of the buttons under dpad) and extract contents.. it'll dump into subdirectory (on mmc?) in a usr directory (since thats how debs store)... then drill down into that usr/share/quetoo subdirectory and copy its baseq2 subdirectory to root of mmc, then point quetoo_load.desktop and quetoo_new.desktop files (in apps/hildon) to that basedir

For future users i've made a archive of quake2 dir (demo data) to be extracted to root of mmc. That along with changing startup (desktops or python) to point to it and use demo1 map instead of base1 map should work as well.

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

This one works, thanks. But still have problems with Trash. I thought it was fixed?

pipeline 2008-03-30 16:29

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

It was fixed (for locales other than english-us), wasnt a problem for english-us users.

I just changed locale and installed bora version (on os2008) and it works fine.

If your problem is that you see an error about not being able to -create- a trash dir, you can ignore it or run emelfm2 as root in xterm so it can create that dir. My configuration replaces trash icon with delete icon so trash is not used at all, but it will still probably look for the directory. So if everything else works you can ignore any red trash error/warnings in output window.

When you press + and - buttons do any dialogs appear? (they shouldn't) And does the vertical button bar look like my screenshot? If so you are configured fine.

If not, perhaps close all programs, uninstall and reinstall?

vvaz 2008-03-30 19:00

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

Thanks. Root trick fixed problem.

No +- doesn't call any dialogs. Vertical bar looks identical.

One problem - home button call task menu but also find dialog, how to get rid of that dialog?

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

Yes, your right about the home key... that works like that for everyone (for now). Never really noticed it much, but it is like that because i was using that as the button i would never need, to clear out old mappings by reassigning them to this.

A better way (which i will do whenever i get enough to make a new build) is to edit (preferably in an ssh where you can search/replace) the :
/home/user/.config/emelfm2/config-en_US file and around the upper middle of that file in the keybindings section replace all occurrences of bindings to F5 key to something like F9 (which maemo doesnt have button for).

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

I finally got that quetoo game working and it looks sweet!! :D, better than some of my psp games! (action and adventure wise not graphical wise, but sound is pritty good:) )
but i had to make some sacrafices:
I had to delete streamtuner, some of my mono add ons:(, videocenter, and, some minor applets that i had..

Speaking or witch, is there a menu on the game ware i can get to the settings, save a game or ware i can select a level of difficulty? or do i need to add a pak file to do this.

hah : yea i understand you but think of copy being instant file copy... either from left pane to right pane or right pane to left.... as soon as you hit copy the file is already copied (or attempted)

so you cant use copy just in single pane mode... copy (and move too) require using both panes.. the active pane is the 'from'.. the other pane is the 'to'.

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

I have updated the OS2008 version (will build 2007 version tomorrow).

This is actual new version/features and upgraded to authors new 0.4 release.

Aside from authors bugfixes and optimizations this is my changelog :
- Fixed Fullscreen hardware button mapping. Pressing fullscreen button in main window, file viewer or file editor now works as expected. The old icon returns to maximizing output pane.
- Cleared out home key bindings to not interfere with maemo home functionality.
- Added crypto plugin back to configuration, its in context menu/plugins
- Added support for file (a file type information guesser)
- Added associations for mono, gnumeric, and pygtkeditor (source code)

OS2008 download links in first post or repo. OS2007 tomorrow.

If you wanted to use the file utility, i've got a build up here (although i see others have built this, this link is based off latest source). Using new context menu user command you can inspect a file to see things like movie encodings (codecs/bitrates), image formats, file formats, etc.

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

All packages have now been upgraded to this newest 0.4 rev 26 release (Just built bora package). See first post for links.

I'd say this release is well worth the upgrade... seems smoother and fullscreen button alone is worth it :)

Bora users : let me know if you run into any issues although i tested it on os2008 and seems to run fine

@pipeline

+1

I agree. The only thing I missed was the install option on debs. I run emelfm as root so that was a brilliant option for me.

Any chance of adding it back in for the next release you do?

(I don't need it for this one as I downloaded the previous version and extracted config-enUS and added the deb install option into the current 0.4.6 config ^-^)

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

Ahh! You noticed :) Yea that was the only difference i had between configs so when i reworked the main one i took shortcut thinking no one was using.

I'll add it back whenever i update next... and i'll probably do what you did (dpkg extract) to figure what that command was :)

I notified author of this port and hopefully they can help me figure out how to make the advanced configuration screens work/fit better on maemo too so in future this could be more easily added from within program (assuming you knew what to add).

I'll add that to todo list for next version... feel free to pass along any other suggestions for associations/configs.

Re: EmemFM2 File Manager Tutorial (Hierglyphs Explained)

Small question, how do you operate emelfm2 as root? I want to edit a couple files that it says I have no permission to edit. I also want to get to directories that begin with a period (shadowed is the correct term?). I normally use Midnight Commander in terminal but I like not opening terminal to just edit a text file.

Opening terminal, gaining root, then drilling to where emelfm2 lives to launch it (or typing a long path) kinda defeats the purpose (making MC easier to use instead) of a hildonized app.

thanks.

By default its xterm, sudo gainroot (or root), and then emelfm2

If you wanted to always launch as root you could do this :

Does emelFM2 have a functioning Search of Find function? There's the Find dialog -- which I get to from the Plugins menu -- but it doesn't seem to do anything. I put in my term, I click Find, and as far as I can tell nothing happens in the top window or in the file manager panes.

(If emelFM2 does not have such a function, is there some other way to find a file when you don't know what directory it is in?) (The default File Manager has a Search function, but it doesn't work for "hidden" folders.)

Right, i think the search function probably does not fit into 800x480 to be usable.

Maybe i can write user commands to do that although it would output to console/output area.

Your just looking to find a file by name or by contents (like rgrep)?
