I'd much rather have (as suggested by Sachin007 and others) a wide scrollbar that is invisible (transparent) until a specified part of it is touched. And if it's also kinetic (or inertial) that's nice, too. But wider-yet-invisible is much more important to me.

If that is the marketed (not community inferred) reason for this device, then why come with 3rd party apps at all ;)

That was my main complaint as well. The atrocious QA of the built in apps is unforgivable for such a consumer application. Replacements like Modest appear to have their own problems as well. In this case Nokia really needs to lead by example or get out of the way by releasing the software stack completely into the open source realm.

That's mischaracterizing the complaint.

The serious suggestion was to funnel iDevice-related threads to the Competitor section-- anything else was meant tongue-in-cheek for the most part, which should be self-obvious.

And there's merit to the suggestion. It isn't just to hide the discussions in NeverNeverland-- it's to corral a certain discussion in the best area for it. That doesn't just benefit those who wish to pretend that dialog doesn't exist (;))-- it also helps those who want to persist in the conversation.

Finally, even us hardcore tablet adherents are more than willing to acknowledge the good that Apple has wrought. Without competition of some sort, a company has less incentive to improve their product. Even though I still maintain that for now the NITs and iDevices are intended for mostly different users, the tablets can definitely benefit from (*cough*) borrowing from Apple's example.

Perhaps, but nobody is mentioning automatically moving any other misplaced thread. This isn't about organizing threads into their proper category. It is about organizing iPhone threads into their proper category.

That's because there's no single, heuristically segregable, class of posts as prevalent as i***** threads. So they annoy us more and make the solution more obvious.

Seriously, if you buy a product without research and it doesn't live up to your expectations, it's your own fault. Average joe can go and drink scalding coffee for all I care (WARNING: Contents may be hot). What can you do about it if you don't like it in this case? Email threating letters to random people about how you'll blow up an iPhone if the NITs aren't fixed.

Mobile computers are like pants, you find what you like and can't imagine how other people can wear something else (those damn baggy ones that show 8 inches of the idiot's boxers confuse me).

I can tell you I'd been die-hard Palm since the PalmPilot Pro through the treo 650. Loved an iPaq for a while after that. And I bought my wife the Touch. I could easily get by with any one of them - and if it came down to the built-in apps I certainly would. But there hasn't been a single device I've mentioned that I didn't add 3rd party apps to address my needs.

As has been mentioned, the power behind the nxxx devices IS the 3rd party apps. It IS the community development. Any reticence toward installing 3rd party software is, to me, stunningly incomprehensible. Why? This isn't shareware for your 98 box...this is *nix development at it varied stages. Of course there are issues. Give me one piece of software that has none.

I guess my point is, if you're going to post a tirade about the shortcomings of the device, while not being interested in doing ANYTHING to address them, what are you trying to achieve? The only options I can think of are: editorial commentary, or convincing yourself that you really want a different device.

If it's to be an editorial commentary, consider making it significantly more impartial and do more to present it as such. If you're trying to convince yourself that you should get something different, don't be surprised when the people in a FOSS-based forum tell you to do just that. Not because we're trying to be jerks, but because our culture is NOT one that will spend an exorbitant amount of energy trying to keep you "in the fold."

Do what you want, man. If you need a hand, we'll help. If you call us clueless, we'll fire up the bbq. We recognize the shortcomings, but we're intimately aware of its strengths. It's not for everyone, but it is for me. I feel no need to apologize if it isn't for you.
