Offline web browsing with N800
 

Hello. I'm new in the forum... soon I will buy a N800 and I don't have clear one thing: The N800 can make offline web browsing? My idea is to download web contents with Teleport to a SD and read it where I don't have wifi cover. Thanks in advance!

I have saved html pages (like purchase receipts) and opened them from the file open dialog on my n810. I don't see why you couldn't do what you are asking about.

I've mostly been using Plucker with FBReader for offline browsing. However, sitescooper with the built-in browser is another possibility. It's Perl, though, so it'll be easier to have a desktop scoop the sites and then copy/ftp to your tablet:

Yes, save web page as"complete web page". It will save the page with all images etc. in a specified folder.

Once the web pages are on your tablet, you can also double-tap on them in the File Manager to open them in the MicroB browser.

There is a package called webhttrack in the maemo extras repository which allows you to save webpages recursively (including subpages, linked files, images...) for offline browsing.
It includes a commandline app with tons of configuration options, but also an easy to use web interface.

In the Extras Menu webhttrack will also create a link to a portal page from where you can access all pages you have downloaded for offline browsing.

If you are more into command line or (b)ash scripting, you can use wget instead of webhttrack. wget also has zillions of options, to save webpages for offline browsing.

Thanks to all for the replys. Now I'm using Plucker+Sunrise XP and Teleport+Web Pro in a Palm PDA. Both solutions are reasonably good, but with the N800 screen would be much better. If the web browser of the N800 can open html files from a SD card Teleport makes the rest. Thanks!

My turn to ask a really beginners question but why would you want to browse offline - does that mean that you can view the internet without signing on anywhere? If you view offline pages it's just the pages that you viewed - right but not with any new content - right??

You can only view the webpages you saved. And no, there wouldn't be any new content (just the content that was there when it was saved).

Though not sure what this would do with Google Gears though.. probably nothing since a saved webpage wouldn't actually be the site in offline status. Just a saved copy of the website.

FBReader works to view both .html and Plucker/Sunrise docs (plus many more formats). Get more info here: http://www.fbreader.org/about.php :)

I installed httrack on my N800 using the Application Manager. But I can't find it on any of my menus, even after re-booting.

Is it only usable from within xterm? I'm a newbie & looking for a non-xterm solution.

Also, I've perused the www.httrack.com site, but not found the answer to this.

I believe httrack is the command line version. Webhttrack is the GUI version.

This is good for offline browsing IMO, just save the webpages in the menu. I don't need the links. I only use the webpages for info.
