BAH!!!!

One of the things that was better about the N810 over the N800 is that it had a FLAT back, not a bulged back.

Yup. I _SO_ want a black N900 without a WWAN radio, and a Personal-Hot-Spot type companion device for the Wifi<->WWAN access. Hunchbacks are for whales and bell-ringers, not tablet computers.

Um, why does the back bother people? I really don't get it. If you lay it flat on a table, it seems a little elevation helps anyhow, and I can't see how else it matters.

I'm trying to decide if I'd rather have the entire tablet be 2mm thicker... ;-)

I _DO_ wish we could get all black N810's Non-WIMAX Editions though. With symbols in blue instead of amber. (black and blue! could called "N810 bruiser edition" ;-) )

So, how soon before we see variations of the N810 with UMTS and EVDO? :-)

Interesting thing in the interview with Urho Konttori: http://www.nseries.com/index.html#l=...p,articles,414

Desktop now supports the same Web Runtime (WRT) technology as the latest N95 update etc. Cross-polination from the more established, well-known and marketed communities should be interesting.

Eh, we're not at release yet. Q2 still has almost 3 months remaining. ;)

Personally, I think Modest will be a good basis for judging how close we are to release. :D

Yeah, the bulge isn't that bad at all.

It's interesting to me that they seem to have a real partnership with Sprint XOHM. They even mention a "XOHM WiMAX activation guide" is included in the box.

I wonder you will be able to get the tablet at a discount if you sign up for service with XOHM, similar to cell phones.

That could be one reason for not releasing the price yet, and also the fact that they say they will only be available in areas where WiMAX is available.
There won't be any device subsidies with Xohm. You'll have to pay full price for any WiMax devices but the trade off is that Xohm won't have contracts.

Re: It's official: N810 WiMAX announced

I've had the bulge in my hands and it actually makes holding the device easier. Just try putting your hands to the location of the bulge of your non-bungy n810 and you'll see that the fingers kind of miss some support. The bulge is quite small, but supports the fingers quite well.

Wonder if my (currently unused) N810 developer discount would work on this tablet as well. ;)

Yeah, yeah.... a guy can dream, can't he?

Bravo! Bravo!

It's beautiful!

The Walkaround Web is launched by Nokia and Sprint - everything you do that can be enhanced by access to Information Resources and People is about to get easier, and more fun, too!

This N810 WiMAX Edition already belongs in a Museum of Modern Trends - a truly pocketable, elegantly designed, State of the Art device that pulls together the Library at Alexandria, the Chinese Waterclock, Gutenberg's Printing Press, the Telephone, the Typewriter, the Computer, the Television, the Internet and Blogging, too!

Always on, always connected, the Web, GPS, Geo-tagged Maps, Video/VoIP Calls, eBooks, Music and so much more! More than a Personal Lifestyle accessory - a working prototype Life accessory!

We're always going to want more - faster, better, cheaper - but the N810 WME is likely to go down as the first device, imvho, to empower the Social Potential of the Walkaround Web - a device worthy of the Age of Community!

Congratulations, again, to Nokia, and to this great Community at itT who have helped make it possible, too!

WiMAX cities

Where will you find WiMAX? Alex Vorn at World of Gadgets cites these locales in 2008: Baltimore, Washington DC and Chicago (with Boston “soon” and New York after that).

Btw, he includes a nice photo (from Jon Snyder at Wired) showing the 2mm bulge:

In general it's not advisable to shield antennas.

True, but it often doesn't matter with WiFi at least. A stray finger usually doesn't make any consistent difference I can see, even when my connection is dodgy.

Re: It's official: N810 WiMAX announced

The kickstand is perfect for holding and elevating the device.
So if you're going to make excuses for the bulge, you should probably stick with
"it's not that big" or "I can deal with the bulge if I get WiMax".

Well, it's not easy to find, but it's in the product name in the URL. If you go to http://www.nseries.com/index.html and click on the big N810 WiMAX Edition image, then it takes you to this URL:

http://www.nseries.com/index.html#l=products,n810_wme

So it seems that N810 WME is the official acronym.

Or ”Who cares” or “Props it up so I can read better“, but not grippity; your fingers are flexible for a reason...

Yes, while Q2 may mean any day now it reality it may be just before all developers take vacation in July ;-) Only euchreprof would tell us exact date.

Also it is puzzling that I still can't find any new RX-?? device at FCC site so how come that almost ordinary people have it in their hands right now?

It's amazing: I even tried firefox (I normally use IE7) and same result. I'm gonna try from home where I can get out of the company domain...

I likes the black. Just seems a bit classier (similar to what it did for the N95). Wish I were still in DC, I'd definitely have a ball in playing with it a good deal. Nevertheless, I can see a solid potential for the ITs, especially as a vertical and consumer running devices with the WiMax addition.

Found this news from sprint

""Motorola will develop Chicago, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Minneapolis; Samsung will develop Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, Providence and Washington D.C.; Nokia will develop Austin, Dallas, Denver, Fort Worth, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and Seattle." "The company plans initial service launches in several markets by year end 2007 and expects to make commercial service available in a number of markets by April 2008"

is the wimax part a changeable module in any way? How is it connected?

I am curious to know how well integrated it is, and what frequencies it covers, so that there would be a chance of getting a UK version which works with the trials here.

Beyond aesthetic reasons, I keep my N810 in a leather case, and the bulge may hinder the device from fitting in the case. Also, I use Bodyguardz film to protect the exterior, and I can see that bulge would make applying the film more difficult than with the current smooth surface.

Might I dare hope that we can use apt-get to upgrade *to* the new OS, rather than having that functionality added after we've re-flashed to it?

You might dare hope, but I'm pretty sure it won't work that way. They'd have announced that back with OS2008 if it was done.

I find it difficult to believe that the tiny bulge in question will be much of a hinderance in any respect.

That is old info, and those contracts were lost the first time the Sprint/Clearwire deal fell through.
