1. Set maemo_allow_custom_player to True
2. Set player to your desired audio player (e.g. panucci)
3. Set videoplayer to your desired video player (e.g. mplayer)

If anyone wants to test an experimental build of the current Git master branch with some UI changes specific to Maemo, please download this file and install it on your tablet:

gpodder_0.15.2~maemotest090511_all.deb

As always, the version number is chosen so that Application Manager will allow you to "upgrade" to the stable version (currently 0.15.2-1) if you do not like this version.

Some highlights:

• More UI space on the main window
• Fingerscrolling everywhere (where possible ;)
• New preferences dialog (select audio/video player; gestures)
• Download pause/resume/... (from the Git master branch)

thp; Thanks for your help -- I appreciate you taking the time to answer my trivial question.

Beware, though, the gPodderWiki gives some slightly misleading advice. In the 'Options related to playing podcasts with a portable player', the section on the N8xx simply states that the maemo_allow_custom_player and videoplayer need to be set.

The reader needs to be careful to read even further into the document to discover (in 'Listening/Watching a podcast') that 'you have to specify the "player" command in addition...'.

Wanna guess where I stopped reading? :-)

I have changed the relevant sections in the gPodder Wiki. As it's a Wiki, feel free to contribute and fix documentation issues. Documentation is one of the most undernourished parts of open source projects, anyway :)

I have been using gpodder since I got my N800 2 years ago and the recent updates have made huge improvements (especially on speed to startup). Everything in the new update works like a charm.

Quick question to thp: in that last screen shot what media player are you using?

I don't mind media player playing my files, but that is a pretty slim little UI you have there. Thanks again for all the hard work, it really is a great program and facilitates the best thing I use my N800 for.

Which screenshot do you mean exactly? I suppose you are talking about Panucci. It's available from Maemo Extras, and the instructions above tell you how to set up Panucci as a player in gPodder.

In the upcoming version (0.16.0) for which a test release is also linked above, the preferences dialog will give you a choice of which audio and video player you want to use, depending on what you have installed, so it should be more straightforward to select Panucci as the preffered audio player.

@thp, thanks for that recommendation. panucci is definitely nice, and on my roadtrip this week of 1200 miles roundtrip, it was a lifesaver.

But, I can't figure out how you have panucci running as an applet on the desktop. Maybe thats the radio (which I never use)? Here is that image I was talking about:

Sorry for the completely remedial, non-gpodder question, but hopefully you can clue me in to this pretty neat feature I am clueless about.

That's what I had figured, but having an applet for one of these media players, almost as a very slim skin would be super cool. Maybe one day.

Yep. The screenshot you linked above was only to show that the tray icon (hence the filename) has a progress indicator. I was not able to get any closer to that with my camera without losing focus. Did not intend to confuse you :)

For the applet: What are your use cases for it? If you are driving with your car, you probably want an interface as huge as possible. Having some use cases to think about would be good :)
