770 Display problem
 

Hi,

I bought an 770 a few days ago, right now its at the service point of nokia because the display only showed undefinable lines and very strange colors.

What suprised me the most (BEFORE IT GOT BROKEN!), when I turned on the device for the first time, were the lamps of the backgroundlight, at the right side of the device, it doesnt look very good, kind of a mix between very light and very dark areas.

The hole right side of the device seems to be darker to me than the left side, especially in the upper corner on the right side.

I started to google for some picture of the 770 and found out that some device have the same (problem?) but some other have not, they have a very bright display without any dark areas.

The other thing I was concerned about was the display quality, I had an QTek Universal before and a lot of other PDA's.
I have to agree that the resolution and the colors are very impressive, but the whole display looks like there's a cheap screen protection deployed on it, there isnt the brilance (kind of greyish and well, fuzzy?) of other displays I saw on PDA's or even mobile phones.

So, how does your display looks like?

I've got a bright display all the way across.

Can you make a big,clear and sharp photo of that and upload it somewhere?

I need some pictures of that to show my dealer.

It looks like the same picture on the front of the web site. There are some other screen shots and pictues of it here and elsewhere on the web (thoughtfix's webpage).

If it really looks like that one, mine was definitly broken.

blury and the third one is after the screen went into no-backlight mode, but as you can see its not birghter on one side than the other.

on shot2 there appear to be dark and light fringes along the scroller bar on the very right hand side

I wonder if they would have been there, if the backlight hadn't turned off.

i notice that i have fringes on my right side when the screen is bright , backlight off and even the lightest setting, but it has never really been noticable

I think this is characteristic of these type of displays, I also have the fringes but it is only noticable from certain angles, my Zaurus was similar. It must have something to do with the light source along the right edge.

The fringes don't really matter.. from the sound of it, the problem is one side darker than the other on his unit.

My palm has them along the bottom edge too. So probably is a display issue

Could people chime in here and let me know how the display looks?

Mine has both the fringes to the right and the slightly darker right side area as are on the photos above. It's not objectionable, just very noticeable because when compared to the screen on my Fujitsu-Siemens LOOX 720 (640x480) it looks pretty bad. Lighting on the FS is absolutely even, no fringes, no lamps visible.

What I'm wondering about more is whether or not all the 770 screens have the "metallic effect" mine does? In other words, if you hold the device in front of you and slowly tilt it from the left to the right, or right to left - is there a shifting pattern in the screen as if it was a metallic paint job on a car? Something like this picture, the pattern in the paintjob that is. Hard to find something to show what I mean but that comes close.

The LOOX screen, again, is absolutely smooth paper white with no pattern, moire or any other such things, whereas my brand-new 770 does have a very noticeable pattern of tiny "flecks" that seem to shift as you tilt it.

Again, it's not unbearable, but what I need to know is if it is normal for this screen or if I should take it back to the store and shriek like a girl? :)

Are you talking about how white areas seem to have a slight glitter to them? I remember seeing a thread on that a long time ago; it's normal, Ihave it too. Actually, I think it might make the display easier on the eyes.

Oh, and I have those fringes on the the right too. Sometimes it's worse, but I haven't noticed any pattern.

I mean the "glitter", yes. Not sure I'd characterize it as glitter though, more "quite aggravating distortion" ;)

Personally, I don't think it makes the display easier on the eyes at all, I think it adds considerably to my eyestrain. It resembles how it would look if you put a clear sticker on glass; as if there are miniscule little airpockets between the sticker and the glass.

I can only assume that the "sticker" in this case is the touch-sensitive layer. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I'm probably a bit handicapped from having had a F-S LOOX 720 for a while now... the screen is much, much better than on the Nokia, albeit slightly lower resolution at "only" VGA.
