You keep saying "real distro", am I to infer that ITOS is a complex distro? Oh, no, I get it, it's pure imaginary: iTOS; since I'm an EE, I guess I should be calling it jTOS.
But you could be running a complex distro: KDE + jTOS. Or, in polar form:

Speaking at the Embedded Linux Conference in Mountain View this week, Christian showed an N800 tablet running the GIMP, an open source image processing package that he said worked well on the device.
Well, I had to try it. Here's a screenshot of GIMP running on my N800 (in a Debian Lenny chroot, displayed via VNC). I wouldn't say it runs "well" at all. It doesn't fit on the "real" screen of the IT, I can only use it because I have a larger, scrollable virtual screen. And it doesn't run very quickly. It is usable, but that's about all I can say.

I haven't yet posted in this thread - I should have some time ago. Have any of you seen/played with Ubuntu Mobile? I have a working boot USB stick on my Samsung Q1 Ultra and it's not bad. I think this is the direction Nokia would go rather than a full desktop Ubuntu.

Hehe, API breaks are a great way to make 'em notice when an update hits. :D

Besides, we certainly get more than a "few" updates a year. The 770 had 5 updates in 2006, the N800 had 7 in 2007.

I dunno... I know there are a few tablet users who would have a fit if you told them you had to use your fingers on the screen.

From the Ubuntu Mobile page:

Ubuntu Mobile is finger friendly, with no stylus needed. You drive Ubuntu Mobile with touch. Simply tap the screen or drag a finger to make gestures for intuitive navigation and control.

The point of a touch screen isn't to be touched by fingers specifically. To me it's for using with a stylus, and using fingers is a last resort, nothing else (I occasionally do the single tap with a nail but I _hate_ touching screens of any kind with fingers, and I _hate_ it when people go fingering _my_ screens and displays).

How close do you think Ubuntu Mobile is to being a completed, i.e. fully usable, Os? I doubt that any os is actually ‘completed’.

What sort of applications have you seen running? What is it about it that impresses you?

I expect the pressure is on to get it ready for installation on certain MIDs by June/July.

With intensive therapy--and a screen protector--I've been able to put this behind me. I'm not touching the screen; I'm touching the screen protector. I'm not touching the screen; I'm touching the screen protector. I'm not touching the screen...

I see a big market for grease-absorbing screen overlays and antibacterial spray...

Oi! Okay ... here's what I know about ubuntu mobile:
http://www.ultramobilegeek.com/2008/...nd-moblin.html

to answer the questions:
Yes, it's HEAVY on finger use.
The interface is smooth and intuitive. Very easy to see where to go first.
The Ubuntu port of ARM makes it pretty easy for developers to port stuff to Ubuntu and Ubuntu Mobile.
Ubuntu Mobile uses a lot of Hildon code. You can see it in the structure of the apps, status bar, menus, and even the placement of buttons/URL on the briowser.

Does that help? ;)
