That's because you probably don't have that document ("POF msgs.note.html") on your NIT. You need to put in the full path of the specific document you want to open. He simply gave an example.

munky261 2008-07-07 00:53

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

The path is /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/Notes/POF Msgs.note.html at what point would i insert that? after the... open string:"file// ? and are the quotation marks needed?

edit: i guess what im asking since the exact path to the exact file is /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/POF Msgs (is it .txt or .note) whats the exact line i can type for it to open that file?

OK, open an xterm and type the following command. What is the output?
Code:

ls -la /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/
I need to know the exact filename so as to give you the correct command to type in.

Okay, try the following:
Code:

dbus-send --print-reply --dest=com.nokia.osso_notes /com/nokia/osso_notes com.nokia.osso_notes.mime_open string:"file:///home/user/MyDocs/.documents/POF Msgs.txt"

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

I haven't been able to wade through this thread, so i'm hoping some kind soul will tell me if this has been addressed already. But my personal menu icon seems to have changed recently. I'm not sure when. I've got diablo with qwerty12's rotation kernel and Penguinbait's install tools, and I updated personal menu just this morning (the new icon was the same before and after the update). Any ideas?

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

The new icon is a custom designed icon version of the old personal menu icon. This was a change is 0.8-3.

fiferboy 2008-07-18 15:36

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

0.8-5 is released. Just a minor update to bring back the old icon. The new icons is being used for the Personal Launcher application, since it didn't have one.

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Seems like the download got corrupted. Try again, and if that doesn't work use one of these links:

For Diablo: http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p....8-5_armel.deb

For Chinook: http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p....8-5_armel.deb

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

If anyone is having trouble with the install from the repositories, try disabling extras-devel. I had both extras and extras-devel enabled and it gave me the error Un27Pee was getting. Disabling extras-devel made everything install smooth.

If this isn't resolved later today I will see if there is anything I can do to fix it.

no problem with the repo install that i have noticed...

It might have been a short time where something was not refreshed after the package went in. Hopefully it is okay now.

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

just noticed that for some reason the dates app icon do not show correctly. funny thing is that it shows in the edit entry dialog. that is pimlico dates btw...

combatdoc 2008-07-18 20:07

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

None of the Pimlico Icons show properly. I noticed that the other day. When you add the app the right icon shows, but when you save it, its the default maemo blocks icon. If I try to manually change the icon the Pimlico icons are nowhere to be found, so I am guessing they are not in the standard paths and Personal Menu just defaults to the blocks icon.

fiferboy 2008-07-18 20:16

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

combatdoc, you are correct. PM only deals with icons that are in the icon cache so I can reference them by name. I have been toying with the idea of having custom location icons working. Perhaps the next release.

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Hi Fifer - I'm seeing some icon size deformities in Personal Menu. They currently look stretched.

E.g.
http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/314011157b.png

Any chance of scaling them up/down without changing the aspect-ratio?

Also, the most recent update to Leafpad seemed to move it's icon from the hildon section to the applications section, and as you can see it's not showing up in the menu itself - it does show in the "Arrange Items" list, but the icon also doesn't show under the "Edit Command", "Icon to display" - instead it displays an image-not-found kinda placeholder.

Kudos though, LOVE the personal menu!

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Hello fiferboy,
Your personal menu is Great! I've been using it since day 1. One request, can you make it rotation friendly? That is, display your personal menu in portrait mode if the screen is rotated, and in landscape mode in normal. This would be great, or otherwise I could only see half of personal menu once I rotate the screen.

Thank you!

fiferboy 2008-09-27 22:16

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

I will try to make sure the next version is rotation friendly (I played with it once and noticed that at least I have it opening in the right spot) and respect icon aspect ratios.

I have a configuration screen redesign almost (90%) completed, so it will do in that version. Thanks for the requests.

Benson 2008-09-27 22:18

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

AFAICT, it is rotation friendly if it's on auto-layout. Or if you only fill it to 480x480 worth, with any layout...

fiferboy 2008-09-28 20:11

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Hmmm, Benson has a point. It will not be rotation friendly if you manually set it up to have four columns.

A question: when using rotation, does it change size on auto-layout every time you change the orientation? Does it require anything special, or does it just work?

Benson 2008-09-28 20:19

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Last I checked, it just worked, but that may have been a couple versions back. Going to test now. (I've just been too lazy to get things into it, so I've been putting up with Nokia's rotation-broken App menu.)

fiferboy 2008-09-28 20:29

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Very soon there will be a version that is much easier to populate. Maybe tomorrow, but definitely this week (hopefully ;-))

Benson 2008-09-28 20:43

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Well, it's not as I remembered, anyway. Auto layout seems to just leave everything in a single column with scroll arrows -- the height of this seems to be calculated assuming 480px screen height, so it scrolls unnecessarily in portrait.

Manually setting the layout to 4 columns, 6 rows, makes my 12 test items fill 6 rows, but only two columns. This works cleanly either way, since it's less than 480 both ways. When setting it to 3 columns, 3 rows, it fills 3 columns and 4 rows, which also works. Setting to 4 columns, 3 rows, it does just that, overflowing in portrait mode, but making an appropriate "best-effort" fit by sticking to the left side and overflowing off the right. Forcing to 1 column makes it overflow the bottom of the "screen", with scroll arrows, but again this stops at 480px.

(And I'm not sure how much easier to populate it could get -- unless perhaps I'm running an extras-devel version with that feature already live. The configuration I'm seeing is first-rate.)

fiferboy 2008-09-28 21:07

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Benson, that makes sense. What if you rotate the screen, remove Personal Menu, then re-add Personal Menu (when it is on auto-layout?) Maybe I just need to check for orientation changes.

Yes, the version in extras-devel has an improved setup, but there are still a couple of things missing.

Benson 2008-09-28 21:41

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Well, after removing and re-adding Personal Menu in portrait, single-column seems to work properly -- in portrait, it doesn't scroll (with 12 items), and in landscape, it does; then retrying from landscape mode works... So the issue I noted seems to have disappeared for no reason .

I guess something probably went weird in my previous test procedure, though I'm not sure what.

fiferboy 2008-09-28 21:46

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

No, Personal Menu only updates when the configuration file changes, so it won't update layout on orientation changes. Apparently starting it in portrait made it a bit better in both cases for your situation, but that wouldn't always be the case.

I will try to have this work better in the next release.

Re: Exporting Personal Menu's content

Is there a way to export the links in the Personal Menu? After flashing the device to a newer (auto-updating) OS, the Device has no entries in PM, it's a blank slate. However, I have a bootable SD card with lots of PM entries. I'd like to export the entries that are in the SD card system to the device's system.

I tried doing this by using Nokia's built-in Back-up of the SD card system's Settings, and then restoring them into the Device's system. Most of the Settings did come along (like it turned on my virtual memory, which had been Off on the Device system but On in the SD Card system), but PM remained a blank slate.

I'd be glad to copy a file from the SD card to the Device system, but I don't know what file that is.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

(BTW, as I've said before, months ago, I *love* Personal Menu, especially since you added multiple Menus, one of which I use as a Form Filler.)

fiferboy 2009-01-04 23:25

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

GeraldKo,

Personal Menu should backup with the "Settings" portion of the Backup/Restore application. There is only one text file ".personal-menu.rc" located in your home directory that contains all the information. You should be able to grab that file from your SD boot and plunk it into your internal boot without issue.

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Dude, your "Personal Menu" and "Personal Launcher" applications have added so much value (in usability) to my N800. Without them my tablet could have ended up on a shelf, never to be used again, months ago. Thanks...

Is there an elegant way to command either application to launch a file that is associated with a particular program?

I would love to be able to fire up "m3u" play list files in a media player with just one click.

If you mean to open files in a particular application by clicking them in the file manager, that's the topic of this thread, and some software does exist. Honestly, I haven't paid it attention since it was fairly experimental tweaky stuff, but I think they've got things reasonably slickified these days...

Thanks but no...

I do use dbus-switchboard so that files from file manager launch in the app I have associated them with... It works very well too :)

That is the first part of the process. The next part would be if I could use Personal Menu to point to that particular file as a menu item.

Right now I have Personal Menu item for media player. If I want a particular song , video, play list, or podcast I must first launch MP, then browse to the file using MP's menu, select it, then rock on.

If instead I could use PM to launch the file, MP would launch along with it saving a bunch of steps, savvy?

You are the best Faheem! :)

How would this command change for a third party app like Mplayer... assuming a default installation?

qwerty12 2009-01-17 14:45

Re: [Updated] OS2008 Personal Menu

Mplayer accepts parameters unlike Media Player, so with mplayer you can do mplayer /path/to/file fine :)

But, if you have to use dbus to launch, the command above should work with any app that supports being launched from the file manager/web browser as mime_open seems to be pretty generic. All you'd have to change is the mediaplayer part & possibly the nokia part. you can see what to change it to by running dbus-monitor and opening a file through the file manager and see what gets launched annd change accordingly. (in this case, it was com.nokia.mediaplayer)
