Keyboards that work with a Nokia 800??

Hi Guys and Guyesses,
There are a multitude of Bluetooth keyboards out there and I think it's time I bought one for my Nokia 800 with OS2008.
My only snag is "Which one to pick?"
Does it have to be a folding type as used with a PDA or can it be a full sized one as normally used on a desktop PC?
Is there a list somewhere of the keyboards that definately work?
Is there a list somewhere of the keyboards that definately DON'T work?

Thanks for any help.
Steve

Re: Keyboards that work with a Nokia 800??

Logitech MX 5000 (desktop keyboard) and
Logitech DiNovo Mini (media-centric thumbboard)

both work. However, there seems to be a problem with re-connection after the device idles for a while. (The Nokia doesn't realize the keyboard disconnected. Clicking the bluetooth-icon and explicitly disconnecting keyboard makes everything work again, as the keyboard reconnects properly as soon as a button is pressed)

It doesn't matter if it's a PDA or full size. I myself use an iGo bluetooth keyboard (forget which model, I'll have to look it up when I have the time). It's a fold up one. Only problem with getting one is they're expensive, and the company has stopped making them so they're getting harder to find. I luckily got mine from a friend who wasn't using his tablet as much anymore so he gave me the iGo bluetooth keyboard.

You can also use USB keyboards (provided they don't require to much power) if you get that USB OTG adapter here or anything that turns on the n800's host mode.

Edit: I have the 5 row bluetooth keyboard.

The wiki has some info. I don't know of any keyboards that don't work. Did you search much?

The iGo ultra-slim is available new and used from many sources easily found with Google. Just make sure you get the right model - mine is an XTBT01, I believe. Also, make sure that you set it up as a regular PC 105 keyboard and _not_ the Nokia BT keyboard, or weird things will happen with certain keys. (Not that I was careless enough to do that myself, of course *cough*!). You'll find that you're able to out-type the connection, but it works quite well, otherwise.

I love my Stowaway Ultra-slim keyboard (model XTBT01). I also have a laser bluetooth keyboard, but it's a bit to freaky using it to recommend. The only bad thing about the Stowaway is that with it open, it is a bit unstable on the keys that are on the edge if you have a hard touch. What I really love about it is it is a pretty good sized keyboard but folds into a size that is about one half and fits into a pants pocket. (I'm typing n it now...)

Hi Guys,
Thanks very much for the replies.
"Did you search much?" ... somebody asked.
Yes, I did. I saw reports of the iGo and a couple of others but the reports I saw were all from sites that may have had a vested interest in the product. I would much rather trust the opinion of end users. Is that OK?

The info about using a USB keyboard looks interesting. I may just have to get one of those.
Cheers,
Steve

i got a freedom universal that works ok. only issue was a moved key that was not remapped in hardware so i had to modify the layout the the x settings file...

but i think thats a issue that only shows up on my localized version. if one can use the standard english qwerty i dont think there should be such a issue...

I had the Logitech MX5000 keyboard.
It was nice, but its too big. I sold it but kept the accompanying MX1000 BT mouse.

I have the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard. $79 on Amazon.
It is super nice. I absolutely love the buttons.
Unfortunately, it has serious reconnection issues. You have to disconnect and reconnect it all the time in bluetooth settings and that's annoying. The power button is useless. You have to pull out the batteries sometimes.

I have a Dell branded stowaway I got on ebay for $25.
I think the Stowaway is the best solution. As soon as you open it, its connected. I've had zero connection issues with the Stowaway. My only problem is trying to remember the keyboard shortcuts.

Re: Keyboards that work with a Nokia 800??

I too have been very pleased with the iGo XTBT01. Once synced, it remains so (although the first character you type after it has fallen asleep takes a couple of seconds to register).

Small size when folded, nice zippered leather case included, reasonable typing speed.

One nit on the keyboard: If you're a command line user, the up-arrow key is where the slash should be - so you'll tend to regress commands when typing paths. :-)

One nit on using any Bluetooth keyboard with the N800: When in "off-line mode" (to save power when not using WiFi), Bluetooth is also "off-line" and the keyboard doesn't work. I'd prefer to control Bluetooth and WiFi radios separately.

But those are small nits compared to the convenience of a good portable keyboard. Definitely recommended.

I use the Apple Bluetooth. There are MINOR connection issues. All I do is disconnect the keyboard via the quick menu at the top of the screen. Then it reconnects in seconds. Otherwise it is excellent.

I use the Apple keyboard and have had 0 connection issues. I just turn on the keyboard and it automatically connects. This is with my 810.
