Question re Video playback.

Hi Guys,
Nokia 800 with OS 2008 (just in case it makes a difference to the answer)

I have some films on my PC that I wanted to watch on my n800.
I did some searching and found that this prog should do the trick and that movies were optimised for the Nokia Internet tablets.. (Please note the underlined bit)

http://www.nokia.com/A4688059

So I downloaded the prog and converted the films. I then copied them to an SD card and did a test run of the first film using MPlayer.
It was unwatchable.
The sound was jerky and the image paused every few seconds and then started again but not from where it left off.
The chances are that I have done something wrong such as used to wrong video converter or the wrong player but I have to say that in the few seconds I get of watchable video, the actual picture is astoundingly good.
Tho films have been converted to MP4
Any clues as to what I can do to improve the situation and make the films watchable would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Steve

rkopper ... Thanks for that.
I'll go and give it a try.
I just hope it's something that works right out of the box 'cos my tweaking stuff days are over, lol.

Re: Question re Video playback.

OK, what have i done wrong here?

On that linked page, there is a section for downloads.
The first option is for beta so I ignored that one 'cos I ain't techie enough to know what I'm doing and went for the Full Setup.
I downloaded it onto my PC, did all the usual AV checks and then ran the application. All went well and I can WATCH the film on the PC screen.
If I ever figure out how to convert the film, am I somehow supposed to run the same programme on the n800?
I tried copying the files over to an SD card on the tablet but nothing I have pre-installed on the n800 seems to want to open the file and install the video player.
Ah well.
These things are sent to try us but it's 3:45 am here in UK so I'm off to my bed.
Take care all.

Re: Question re Video playback.

You should install mplayer from here..

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/mplayer/

After that, you can follow the instructions on the page with the link to the program. The conversion will take some time and when the file is converted it will be in the destination directory. Then transfer the encoded video over to your sd card. When it's on the tablet you should be able to start up mplayer, which should find the video file and it should play. This program doesn't go onto your sd card for any reason as it's for pc only. If you are truly stumped about this, then maybe we can exchange instant messenger contacts and I can try to walk you through it. Good luck!

Re: Question re Video playback.

The Nokia Video Converter produces videos that are optimized for playback in the default media player, not mplayer. It's designed for simple, non-tweaking use -- i.e., drag and drop a video and it'll convert it and copy it to your tablet for playback.

is there anyway to make the converted videos smaller? started with a 100mb file, ended with 400mb.

OK, Thanks go to rkopper.
I downloaded the prog he/she suggested and dropped the movie file into the space provided. Conversion took about 40 minutes after which I hooked up my n800 and copied the converted file across to the internal SD card.
The film now plays perfectly using media player and even the fast action shots are crystal clear.
Many thanks,
Steve

It helps if you can just use your real name, albeit with a slight change. lol

Click the "settings" icon in the top right corner and try some lesser quality vids. By default, ITVC optimizes for quality, not size.

Re: Question re Video playback.

Just as a matter of interest, is it just my eyes that have gone funny or do the films converted by the prog in post #2 give the film a sort of mini 3D effect?
Or is it just the clarity of the image that does that?
