how much total memory can you have in the n810?

I have seen on the nokia website that you can have a maximum of 8 GB in the slot, and 2 GB that come with it. Is there any way to have more than that amount of memory? is there any software that will allow me to have more than 8 GB added on?

As far as I know the only limitation right now is a physical one-

The largest available Mini or Micro SDHC card is 8GB, and the n810 has only a single miniSD slot.

They make 12gb micro sdhc cards, they are just rare and expensive.

Re: how much total memory can you have in the n810?

The N810 has no trouble reading a 16Gb SDHC card (full size SD) when attached with an appropriate reader with a USB cable/adapter in the micro USB port in OTG host mode. I suspect it will also read a 32Gb SDHC (but currently too expensive to consider IMO) and of course some seperately powered HD's. It will also run some flash drives without external power and maybe even 32Gb or 64Gb versions. (Meritline has a $150ish 32Gb flash drive that MIGHT work but no personal experience).

I am still looking for a single slot SDHC card reader that will be powered by the N810 itself. If anyone has one working I would be very interested to know.

PS: I also expect that if/when MiniSD or MicroSD goes to 16Gb, the N810 will have no trouble reading them.

Check around. This topic has been discussed to death.

Can someone direct me to a compatible miniSD or microSD that is 16GB? (one that can fit into the available port). Thanks

No, I don't think anyone can, because there aren't any (production) yet.

I posted images of my SDHC MicroSD card reader working directly on the N810 somewhere on the forums. Can't remember if it was you who saw them or not - but you do have the option of an extra 8GB MicroSD on the N810 that way! Also happens to be the smallest and one of the cheapest readers on DealExtreme ;)

Any size you can buy, now or in the future (I must have answered this in 10 threads just the last 6 weeks I think)

I've got a 16 GB SDHC card. It works in either 'internal' or 'external' slots. So, though i have 18.25 GB on line (.25 fixed, 16 internal, 2 external), i see no reason not to have 32.25 GB. When prices come down, i might add 32 GB, for 48.25 GB on the n800. The 16 GB card was about $75.

I realise this would allow me to add 8gb externally (and 8Gb internally) but my goal is to carry my entire music collection with me. I have two 16Gb SDHC cards which is still a compromise for two reasons (I need about 35Gb for music and i would like it in one card) but at least a full size reader will let me keep up with SDHC card technology which tends to provide the largest capacity in the full size format first.

I do wonder how hard it would be to make/modify a reader that does work (perhaps the micro reader you mentioned) to take the full size card. My thought is to attach the reader ln the back of the tablet and have a short cable to bend round and plug in to the microUSB port.

I welcome any suggestions or comments to make this (or something similar) happen.

Someone put this question into a FAQ! It certainly comes up often enough.

microSD, miniSD, and SD are fully compatible electrically, so conversion should be as simple as expectable.

But if I had an N810, and were contemplating such adaptation, I'd do an adapter for the external slot. Maybe the internal slot, too.

I've considered the external slot but I believe there is a switch on the small plastic 'door' requiring it to be closed for the card to be seen. (This could be problematic for trying to hot swap a card in an extended socket). Perhaps a very small cable could be used an a hole/slot made in the door or perhaps a ribbon type cable (the type found in cameras to swivel the screen or jet printers to allow head travel) but I have no idea where these might be avaialble (I've looked in Digikey, Mouser and other online electronic stores w/o sucess).

I picture the full size slot on the back to be only just bigger than the SD card itself so it would be hardly noticeable. Something like the way a MiniSD fits into a full size SD adapter. Obviously there are some electronics necessary as well but upon opening some of the card readers I see that the guts don't take up that much space.

Re: how much total memory can you have in the n810?

Yup, ribbon cable, (like an IDE cable) or, ideally, flex cable (what you're talking about), that's what I was thinking of.

Hot swapping the external card, assuming no great modifications to the door, is this simple:
Open door to miniSD slot, wait to make sure it doesn't fail to umount it, then swap card; close door to make card available.

If you want to go hacking around, removing the door switch and wiring up one on the full-size slot would be even better, but if you can do it with a flex cable and maybe paring a tiny bit off the door, you don't risk injuring a ~$400 device.

Opening door sounds like a simple solution. I certainly don't want to open it up and hack. Thanks for ref to 'flex cable'. Might do a bit more searching for this term.
