Editing uDHCPc Default.Bound
 

Okay, here's a dumb question, something I'm sure will be obvious...

I'm trying to set the hostname on my tablet in such a way that it will be picked up on my network, by my router, and so forth.

From Google I've discovered that these tablets use uDHCPc, a simpler dhcp client for these types of devices. Great. And, it looks to me like there's a file, etc/udhcp/default.bound which has a line, commented out, that allows you to set your hostname. Again, great.

The problem is, and the part that makes this a dumb newbie question - I can't seem to edit this sucker in vi. I can go into insert mode, but when I 'Esc' and try and save and quit (:wq) I get messages like 'w is not implemented' which makes me think I'm missing something basic.

I just successfully used vi to edit another config file, so I don't know what I'm missing ...

OR ... can someone tell me how to use vim as root, accessing the whole file directory structure and not the little sandbox that the GUI applications seem to want users to play in ...

Off the top of my head, two things I can think of.
1: Are you root?
2: If it's a read only file, you might need to ":w!" to override the readonly.

I love the way this is in the "newbie" forum.

I don't understand a single word of the above! Even the subject line has me totally utterly baffled. ;-)

Seriously though, shouldn't there be some kind of division between forums for "genuine newbies" and forums for "people who think they're newbies but are actually pretty darn good at computing"?

I think it's more about how to use vi :)

I understand it (I have no idea where my ok Linux knowledge comes from as my N800 was my first proper stint into using Linux properly, except a few formatted installs years ago. Then again, when I was 9, I did take ton of Linux books out of the library.).

That's NOT a newbie question, that's an advanced user's question. :-)

Newbies wouldn't know what vi is. I don't know what vi is if I'm being totally honest.

True, I cannot argue there :)

I didn't know how to use vi before I came to this forum. I learnt a bit from fanoush (saving and deleting lines), rcull and albright (actually modifying a file) and AStorm (searching in vi).

I still know only those basics above but it gets me by :)

Easiest way is to use leafpad to edit.

It's a question of time, I think.
If I asked how to edit config.sys on a Windows XP box with edit.com, people would say that's not a newbie question.
But for me, that is the same question as, "how do I edit config.sys with edit.com on my DOS 3.3 install?" That was a newbie question in my day.
And its mostly the same question.
