Using mlbviewer & watching Major League Baseball on the N800...

OK. So googling 'linux mlb.com' brought me to mlbviewer.

But. Um. I'm stuck at this point. I downloaded it and:

1. I'm not even sure if it can run on the N800 with OS2008,

2. the download opens up xarchiver and I'm not sure what to do at this point.

I've unzipped the files into a dedicated folder but I can't figure out which file (if any) actually does whatever the application's suppose to do in order to watch my paid live video feed subscription of baseball games.

The mlb.com site is awful on a Mac in a variety of browsers so you can imagine how crappy the site is for linux users

In any case, if I could figure this out, that would be grand. Sometimes I just don't want to watch the game in front of my desktop computer screen, damned it, and the onscreen window is just about the size of the N800 (in height, at least).

Help?

You'd need to compile the software for the N800.

I can't even get the audio to work. I haven't bothered with mlb-tv, but I do subscribe to the game-day audio, and it won't play on my N800 or my Eee PC. It seems to require Micro$oft silverblight, and that's Windows only AFAIK.

Oh, dear God.

I have no idea what that means.

OK. I'm assuming I'm going to need some application that I probably don't already have. Suggestion for which one? And a decent tutorial page somewhere?

It'd be grand to watch the game away from the desktop.

For some reason, my mind has decided that playing my video stream is going to be a litmus test for my next purchase, the EEE PC 900. If I can't get the Linux version to play my video feed, the desire for a new toy goes down quite a bit, I admit. I am *not* using any Windows OS EEE PC.

That whole operating miserably failed my litmus test years ago

Ok. I looked into it further, mlbviewer is at least partially written in the Python programming language, which doesn't need to be compiled. Python is an interpreted language, and there's a Python interpreter for the N800.

However, I don't know if all the Python libraries that mlbviewer requires are available for the N800. Audio and video decoding libraries would NOT be written in Python, they'd be written in higher performance programming language, like C. And C needs to be compiled (translated from "English" to machine instructions) specifically for the OS and hardware the software will run on.

Compiling software for a different OS and hardware can be difficult or easy, depending on the software. For example, onscreen buttons would typically be created by a OS specific routine. It'd be different between Mac, Windows, etc.

However, you could also create onscreen buttons through a cross-platform toolkit, which would handle the variations automatically. Such software could easily be compiled for any OS supported by the toolkit.

That response was informative (if not a bit depressing since I was hoping a two-click solution was going to be offered :) .

I'm watching the Mariners play the White Sox right now. The Sox are up 6 to 0... in the bottom of the freakin' 2nd inning

If the Mariners don't find their asses soon, this whole thread may be moot :p

Why is an external viewer needed? Just copy the following to the address box and go. Although not perfectly smooth, the built-in media player does a decent job. You can even bookmark the mms stream afterwards.

Thing is, I'm paying for live (and archived) video feeds that require a subscription, a sign-in and a password so I guess L'd have to get past those on the N800's browser and then somehow snag the url?

Thanks for reminder re: the TV thread. It's great ttosee the OP has been updating his starter post.

For mlb gameday audio (I dont pay for the video) the mplayer plugin for microb works great for me. I also can watch the videos on the brewers front page, after the cpu is done with the java script that slows down all mlb sites.

http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=17715

It took me a couple of weeks to get it to actually work, but i finally turned off the default plugin and turned on all of mplayer's components and it worked. The stream kills the battery though.

Well... that works... sorta.

But thanks for directing me to the mplayerplug-in. Got that up and going, got into red pile mode (with some searching on the forum), everything hunky dory.

But, man, even at 400k, there's no action. I guess the N800 just doesn't have enough decent juice for streaming video :(

This is really disappointing (more disappointing than the Mariners blowing it last night *again*). I guess I can listen since the audio is great.

Poor N800 - the things I ask from it are not what it was designed for, apparently.

Thanks for the guidance!

Re: Using mlbviewer & watching Major League Baseball on the N800...

Sorry I couldn't be more help. My guess is that the issue for the video is the codec. I have yet to see wmv run well on my tablet, even when running from the memory card.

If you're looking to watch the flash based box score app, you should check out espn's. I can't get mlb's version to run on the tablet (it tells me express installs are not supported, don't know what that means and haven't really investigated) but espn's works, and kept up decently with the game for the one game I used it. It kills the battery even worse than streaming audio, so I gave up trying it and just use the auto-refresh mobile page.

I actually use mlbviewer to watch MLB tv in Linux. There's a thread were you can post to the creators: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ml#post3159277
Basically you need Python and one python library. It's not going to be an easy click and go type of deal (the app is actually command line). But it's simple and works. There's also another page about it here: http://www.eds.org/~straycat/mlblinux.php Hope that helps you out.

>>I guess the N800 just doesn't have enough decent juice for streaming video<<

I bookmarked dozens of live mms feeds on the default media player--tv streams (including cnn), sports, mtv, movies, etc. Most of them are smooth (not mlb though) and very enjoyable.

I've downloaded it and I know I need some kinda python compiler maybe sorta kinda (see earlier in the thread).

I just sort of gave up. I'm afraid if I start asking questions on those sites you mentioned that people will start asking me Linux questions for background info and I just (obviously) don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to anything Linuxian :D

The fact that the Mariners pitching pen sux only has a little to do with this

Oh yes, yes, yes. I'm watching CNN using it right now :) A great idea.

There are better tv stations to watch (cnn a & v streams can be slightly out of sync), but there is only one cnn...

Re: Using mlbviewer & watching Major League Baseball on the N800...

Betty, if you're still looking for mlbviewer, I've now made a port (due to a change in mlb's media serving killing the audio that I had working). I haven't tested the video, but if you're willing to give it a shot you can check it out in this thread.
