Just ordered a N810
Hello everybody.
I finally broke down and ordered a Nokia N810 from eXpansys.com to be shipped to Tokyo, Japan. I've been putting this off since the N800 and chose it over the iPod Touch. Can't wait to get it. i should get it in a week or or so. It will allow me to further promote my podcasting/ Jindies music promotion activities here in Tokyo by giving me quick and easy access to the Web 2.0 technologies like uStream, YouTube, twitter, Friendfeed, and the various SNS sites like MySpace, Facebook. etc. Yoroshiku. |
Re: Just ordered a N810
TokyoDan, let me know how it turned out for you. I'm in Tokyo as well and was planning on getting one. How much did you have to pay in total, and let me know if FedEx will charge you a 5% consumption tax when delivering to you.
Enjoy! |
Re: Just ordered a N810
Congratulations TokyoDan!
Maybe you could post some images from Japan, related to the music you're promoting or something else? Did you try cucumber-flavour pepsi by the way? |

By the way, where do you live in Tokyo. I'm in Akishima near Tachikawa on the JR Chuo line. Catch you later. I'm heading to Kichijoji to hit a few Izakayas. |
Re: Just ordered a N810
I plan on posting a lot of images and possibly videos of live Jindies performances. Also I have a question about this forum. I want to change my signature and according to the help section I can do that in my Control Panel Profile. But I go there and there's no place to edit my signature.

Re: Just ordered a N810
also my signature isn't showing u in my posts, even though I check "Show your signature"!?
|
Re: Just ordered a N810
You should have no problems when you reach 5 posts. ;)
|
Re: Just ordered a N810
Thanks Reggie. Looks like I have to be active then. I get to 5 posts real quick.

Re: Just ordered a N810
Great! looks like my signature is on.

Re: Just ordered a N810
@Tokyo Dan - I'm going to be in Tokyo in September and I'm planning on bringing an n810 with me to use primarily for VOIP and email back to the US while I'm there.
What's the wifi coverage like in Tokyo? Do you subscribe to a wifi ISP like Boingo Mobile? Any info on how the 810 works in the environs of Tokyo would be appreciated... Ant |
Re: Just ordered a N810
Hello Ant,
I just signed up for Wireless Gate a few weeks ago and used it one time from a McDonald's access point. I was streaming live video from the MacDonald's window to uStream, and watching it come back at me in another browser window. Was pretty fast. I am told that Yahoo BB Mobile and iPass are the two best in Japan. Wireless Gate is only in Japanese but iPass has English websites. http://www.tripletgate.com/wirelessgate/ http://www.ipass.com/ (Wireless Gate uses Yahoo BB Mobile, Livedoor Wireless, and Airport Net). |

Re: Just ordered a N810
I'm as well living in Tokyo since last year and I'm using my Nokia N800 a lot to access the Internet using WiFi access points.
If some of you come to Tokyo, I recommend you to join the FON community before, there is a lot of access points everywhere and since a few months back you can use as well livedoor access point for free if you are a FON member, so it's really easy to find a FON ap anywhere... |
Re: Just ordered a N810
Erm, be careful with FON, AFAIK they still haven't said what happens if someone uses your access point to do something illegal.

Re: Just ordered a N810
My La Fonera+ and the Fontenna just arrived from Amazon.jp. But I'm still waiting for the main course, the N810. Can't wait to get this all running so that I can access the net from the park behind my house via the N810.

Re: Just ordered a N810
When you get it, charge it til it's full and then update the firmware. The latest firmware solves various bugs.
Also, as it's an N810, you might want to format the built-in 2GB memory card before you start using it because there was a problem in the way some units were formatted at the factory. It's very easy to correct this, just go to the file manager, select the memory card and select the format option: http://tabletschool.blogspot.com/200...d-on-n810.html The odds are that your card is fine, but the process of checking whether it's fine is a lot more complicated than the process of fixing any potential problem, so it's easier just to fix it even if it isn't broken. |
Re: Just ordered a N810
Well, I got home from work today (took longer than usual, 25 minutes just to get out of the parking on the roof of the mega-store where I work) to find a box with my new N810. I resisted tearing off the wrapping and chose to have dinner first, check my email, and then post this. Now I'm about to see what's under the wraps. But getting a new gadget is close to a religious experience for me. I will carefully open the box, take a quick look at everything before poring over the complete manual. I am a "RTFM" type of guy. Then I will plug in the battery, and charge the n810 overnight. When I wake up tomorrow, I will check if the firmware needs to be upgraded and take care of that if necessary. Since tomorrow is a late start at work, I will carefully familiarize with my new friend and then get the wireless connection going with the FON router that arrived last night. Then my quest of using the n810 in new and interesting ways to promote my music websites will begin. I'll let you know the details of that quest soon.

Re: Just ordered a N810
Hello auyongtc,
FedEx didn't charge me a 5% consumption, nor was I charged any VAT. I paid only for the unit and eXpansys special shipping charge of 2750 yen. the N810 was 43600 Yen. Quote:

Re: Just ordered a N810
Also the actual N810 box was a little bent up because it was shipped in a large, brown, padded paper envelope, something you'd expect a sweater to be shipped in. Also the paper sticker on the side of the box was sliced open (for customs inspection I guess), but the silver paper-metallic tape that tapes the front cover flap to the bottom of the box to keep it from being opened wasn't sliced so I don't think customs could get a good look inside. But when I opened the box, inside was a beautiful new, N810. No scratches nor fingerprints. So I trust it is really new and that eXpanse is a good company to deal with.

Re: Just ordered a N810
Cool, glad to have you "on board".
Really keep us up to date with your brand new experience with you new N810. I am always open to new ways of using it. |
Re: Just ordered a N810
Dan, you sound like the sort of guy who will really enjoy the N810. It's good to read your posts. :)
|
Re: Just ordered a N810
I sure will anidel, and I intend to keep everybody up to date on my activities in more ways than one. And in my new project I want to challenge myself to use computing devices (desktops/laptops) other than the N810 only when it's impossible to do what I'm trying to do on the N810.
Does anyone know of any audio apps/utilities (like audacity) that run on the N810? Also is there a FTP client. I know I could probably use the ftp command from the terminal, but I prefer a GUI instead of typing in commands. One more thing. I know that when the N810 is connected to a computer via USB that the N810 looks like a normal storage device. Well, what happens when a storage device is connected to the N810 via USB? e.g. Will my iRiver iFP 795 MP3 player/recorder look like a storage device to the N810 as the iRiver does to a PC? In other words, will I be able to transfer MP3 recordings from the iRiver to the N810? Quote:

Re: Just ordered a N810
There's a nice utility called 'usbcontrol' that let's you control the behavior of the USB port.
Normally the N810 will behave as a client host and will behave like a mass storage device when connected to a computer with a miniB cable (the one provided by Nokia in the box). i.e. is you attach a USB mass storage to it, it'll ignore it (as both devices will behave as client devices) If you are able to find and buy a miniA cable than the N810 will notice it and behave as a HOST (i.e. like a small laptop) and will behave the opposite. I.e. if you attach a USB mass storage, it'll mount it (as, this time, the N810 will behave like a normal computer). If you can'tfind the miniA cable, than the application 'usbcontrol' if for you. It will let you choose (by means of a UI) what mode the N810 should be in. |
Re: Just ordered a N810
I've done a couple of tutorials on using USB Control, for flash drives and USB keyboards, but the same method could conceivably be used to attach any USB device as long as it doesn't draw too much power from the tablet (for example an HDD with its own external power source should work):
http://tabletschool.blogspot.com/200...nnect-usb.html http://tabletschool.blogspot.com/200...-ordinary.html As far as I know there's no danger to the tablet in connecting a USB device, so if you want to find out what happens, try it. The method in the tutorials requires a F-F USB adaptor which costs just a handful of dollars or euros or pounds because it's basically just a bit of metal. |
Re: Just ordered a N810
Oh yeah, right.. I always forget to point people to your tabletschool Krisse!
Sorry about that! |

Re: Just ordered a N810
Congrats on your new unit. Mine just came in the mail yesterday as well but unlike you I had to get it going the second I got it in the door. So far this is a great device. I have been trying out all kinds of apps and this I think will certainly replace my Samsung Q1 UMPC. This fits my needs better than waiting for the Q1 to boot.
I have also been looking into the Fon service as I will be in Tokyo for a few weeks next month and it looks like there is decent coverage there. I will be interested to hear how your experiance is with that service. |

It looks like jokosher is probably a good bet right now, since it uses gstreamer. Just a note, any audio recording / editing app is going to be very slow on the tablet. |
Re: Just ordered a N810
Well now that I had a day to play around with the N810 I'm starting to worry. So far it's not living up to it's hype. Loading a web page is OK, as far a speed, but clicking on a link to go to another website is almost impossible, it attempts to open the website but it just keep loading but never gets to the point where the website page is displayed, almost like it hangs. Compared to my experiences with the iPod touch, it sucks so far to tell the truth, and I know it's not my wireless connection because my Macbook is on the same wireless connection and clicking on a link to another website opens the site fast. I hope updating the firmware will fix this. If not, it's bye bye N810 and Hello iPod touch.

Could you give examples of some sites where this happens, so we can check how they load on our tablets? One thing that might help: click on the magnifying glass icon in the bottom right corner of the browser and make sure you have "Fit Width To View" switched OFF (i.e. unticked, unchecked). Fit Width To View messes up websites and slows them down too, often causing them to hang. You should avoid it like the plague. It's a legacy feature from much older devices, it's not really much use on the tablets but it's stayed there through inertia. |
Re: Just ordered a N810
Hello Krisse, thanks for the quick reply. I had "Fit Width To View" switched On, now it's switched OFF but no difference. I can't even load http:www.facebook.com. On the same wireless connection, there was no problem. It seems like the second website accessed doesn't load. e.g.
1. go to google.com --loads OK. Then... 2. go to facebook.com -- "connecting" with the bar moving back and forth forever. I give up then try to go back to google. 3. go to google.com --"connecting" with the bar moving back and forth forever. |
Re: Just ordered a N810
I tried disconnecting than reconnecting the wireless. But that doesn't help. And after resetting my connection, if I go to Facebook first instead of Google, it never completely connects. At the top of the browser, it says "Welcome to Facebook". But the browser page display area is blank. At the bottom is the address/URL entry box, to the right of that is the status, hung on "Connecting". But it's not really hung cause that little blue bar is going back and forth.

Re: Just ordered a N810
I might have changed something that I don't know about. is there a reset to factory settings?
|
Re: Just ordered a N810
I just tried google and facebook on both my N800 and N810 and it loaded in about 5 - 10 seconds without any problems at all.
Either there's something wrong with your tablet, or you have some settings that need altering, or there's something wrong with the connection itself. Whatever the problem, your experience with the tablet is definitely not typical. Did you try closing and reopening the browser after you switched Fit Width To View off? Can you get ANY websites to load normally? Are you running any applications in the background while you're using the browser? Did you update the firmware and reformat the internal 2GB memory card before using the N810? Regarding a reset, IMHO the best way to do that is to reinstall the firmware. If you've already downloaded the firmware the reinstallation shouldn't take too long. |
Re: Just ordered a N810
Did you try closing and reopening the browser after you switched Fit Width To View off? YES
Can you get ANY websites to load normally? NO (I even tried using my 3G wireless Softbank as a modem via bluetooth and the same thing.) Funny thing is before I went to work I could load SOME sites, now I can't load anything. so it7s getting worse. Could it be a cache problem? Are you running any applications in the background while you're using the browser? NO Did you update the firmware and reformat the internal 2GB memory card before using the N810? NO Regarding a reset, IMHO the best way to do that is to reinstall the firmware. If you've already downloaded the firmware the reinstallation shouldn't take too long. I'm going to run the battery down to 0, recharge and update the firmware tomorrow. But formatting the internal memory will wipe of some stuff (maps and so on) that are in the memory. |

It could be a phone network problem that you're encountering. Have you tried using the tablet on an open wi-fi connection? Quote:

Lithium batteries don't ever need to be run down like that. Just charge them as normal. In fact running a lithium battery down too far may cause it to break irreparably. Quote:
Note that the internal memory card (2 gigabytes) is a separate thing to the internal memory (256 megabytes). |
