Re: txt/sms messgeing on n800???

using googletalk (the embedded messenger for n800) you can add phonenumbers as contacts and get true two way communication. The process is simple but I think it only works in usa for now. Add/edit a contact and add field select googletalk bubble. Type in +1xxxyyyyyyy@sms.talk.google.com (replace x and y w/ area code and phonenumber) and your done. Start the chat and it will say 'contact unauthorized' ignore this and text away. Be careful if your friends don't have a plan itt will cost them each time you press enter. Enjoy!

p.s.

don't forget to tell your friends who you are they may not recgonize your email address!

Re: txt/sms messgeing on n800???

You can do that with AIM as well. Just create a buddy whose sn is +1xxxyyyzzzz

The problem is: what they receive is a SMS from a temporary number. They can't always just send to that number out of the blue. So, most of the time, they can't initiate the conversation.

So, IMO, it works, but it isn't really a full solution for SMS/MMS.

What would be nice is if Skype's SMS service worked with their "Skype-IN" number, so that the phone number they assign you could also receive SMS/MMS messages, and queue them up for you to receive when you connect to Skype. This wouldn't be free and universal, but it would at least allow you to use any Skype device as a full voice/SMS/MMS solution.

for whoever you want to text or send an mms to set this in the contacts email address according to what phone company they are using , this is the easiest way and they can reply as well.

VERIZON:

XXXXXXXXXX@vtext.com
XXXXXXXXXX@vzwpix.com

ATT:
xxxxxxxxxx@txt.att.net
xxxxxxxxxx@mms.att.net

TMOBILE:

ok so I guess I was misunderstood. You CAN have a friend initiate a conversation when using the googletalk method. Example: Your friend wants to text you about a party. They enter the message and send it. It pops up on your n800!

Re: txt/sms messgeing on n800???

I use Pidgin + AIM. I use it to text my friends all the time. When a person recieves a text from me it looks like this:
"<user name>: (using AOL IM) <actual message>"

To the recipient they just see a six digit number. I can only recieve messages if someone is replying to one that I've sent. I am almost sure that a person can initiate the conversation, but sometimes i will not recieve the message. Also if someone sends a message and I'm not online they will recieve an automated reply saying so.

This is for USA.

People get a personal e-mail address at their provider here. This is forwarded to SMS. It is in a standard format @provider.ccTLD (e.g. nl or co.uk) with the phone number in it before the @ (not with +, just the regular number which works nation-wide).

Also, there are some free SMS providers on the Internet (existed even end 90s where they were driven by advertising). Some programs were frontends which use(d) these websites, partly evading some advertising on the website. But the SMS also contain advertisments.

My provider also allows a few free SMS a day to be send from the personal homepage, and besides that also some standard texts (e.g. "where are you?").

All in all, there isn't a perfect solution, and setting up a SMS gateway isn't cheap. But if you think of it, and think of IMs as very cheap (and more advanced) then SMS is overpriced. Yet, feature-wise it does what it has to.

ADD 100% free unlimited incoming + outgoing sms/text messaging to your tablet:

1. In Control Panel, open Accounts
2. Click New/Edit to create a Google Talk account with your google account credentials
3. In View Contacts, add/edit a contact
4. In field field "google talk", type
+1xxxyyyyyyy@sms.talk.google.com
(replace x and y w/ area code and phonenumber)
5. Select contact & start the chat (or start chat & select the contact)
6. Ignore the message "Contact is unauthorized. Unable to guarantee that messages will be delivered."

Text away. Each time you press enter, normal texting rates apply for your contacts.

From your mobile phone, txt my N800 @ 406.205.0523
(it's 100% free unlimited for me from google)

Enjoy!

ok... what do they send to?

assumptions:
  • you have never sent them a message this way, so they can't use any sort of reply functionality
  • their sms service only allows them to send actual sms (ie. to a number, not anything that looks like an email address, etc) (metropcs does this if you don't enable your phone for email, for example)
  • your gmail is example@gmail.com
  • your phone# is +12345678900

so, to what do they address their sms message to ensure that it gets to you in google talk?
