Facebook Chat Plugin on Pidgin?

I have downloaded the Facebook Chat plugin for pidgin on my PC and it is great. Is it possible to install it on pidgin on my N800? There is a linux plugin, it can be downloaded here

http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/

Re: Facebook Chat Plugin on Pidgin?

It would need to be re-compiled for arm.

(I use this too)

Re: Facebook Chat Plugin on Pidgin?

I've attempted to get this working but have been so far unsuccessful and I think i'll give up for now. the library compiled cleanly for me in scratchbox, but I was unable to get pidgin to come up in xephyr to test it.

I was unable to get pidgin on my n800 to see the library when I put in my /usr/lib/purple-2 directory. If anyone else wants to try i've put the .so here http://www.dpo.uab.edu/~rcloud/libfacebook.so

I hope one of you has better luck than me.

Re: Facebook Chat Plugin on Pidgin?

I put it in the /usr/lib/purple-2 directory as well, and like you no joy. Looks like we might have to wait till they put facebook chat on jabber, theres been no news on that for a couple of weeks :(

hans-castorp 2008-05-30 00:32

Re: Facebook Chat Plugin on Pidgin?

how did you try and compile it? did you use the libs from apt-get libpurple-dev or what? I had hard time getting those to work right so I had to download the headers and compile with them in the folder. dumb i kno :P

Re: Facebook Chat Plugin on Pidgin?

Sorry im not very hot with linux, I just downloaded the file and stuck it in the directory. On the "How to install" page it said to enter "sudo chmod +r /usr/lib/purple-2/libfacebook.so" in xterm but I still couldn't get it to work.

Re: Facebook Chat Plugin on Pidgin?

ahh ok. if you find a few spare minutes, try the file i posted. there might have been some issue with my python config. The file posted at the website was built for intel x86 processors like a workstation. we need a differently built file to run on our nokias.

Re: Facebook Chat Plugin on Pidgin?

Personally, I'd just wait for the jabber release of the facebook chat, but who knows how long that would take...

You mention fixes. What did you have to fix?

Re: Facebook Chat Plugin on Pidgin?

Nothing specific to the code, but in the makefile, it was all wrong for the maemo sdk (I also really don't need a windows version compiled to but I guess I could use options) and the file location is wrong (for the tablets) anyway.

Cool. Can you please email through the changes you made to the Makefile. I've compiled an arm version of the plugin, but it probably needs the .deb package to work on the Nokia?

Thanks for your work on this plugin.

Also, what kind of skype presence does your pidgin skype plugin check for?

Sorry, I cleaned out my scratchbox. Too much projects :(

But the /usr/lib/libpurple needs to be /usr/lib/pidgin and I changed the gcc string naturally and I included the pidgin headers as a source for headers too.

I then went and made a deb package and just repacked it.

Sure does! Please tell if it works or not, I don't have an ARM processor to test it on

The latest maemo release on the website http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/ is now working. Far more stable than the early release.

Yup - latest version works. Pity the deb doesn't :( [Qwerty - can you package it up again and stick it on extras?]

Sure, I'll repackage it again for the new version (give me 15 mins if I am lucky or a day if I aint :P) .

About extras, I'll get in touch with X-Fade sometime.

well, the real question is, how can i get this to work with libpurple in telepathy-haze/rtcomm beta? :-)

Re: Facebook Chat Plugin on Pidgin?

[ANNOUNCE]

I can happily present the latest version (1.18) of Eion Robb's pidgin-facebookchat compiled for maemo.

http://i29.tinypic.com/akhes3.png

Changes:
  • Newer.
  • Package reflects upstream package. (with some maemo twists)

Remove the old package before installing. (That shouldn't always have to be done, it's that I made a lot of changes to the package)

The latest 1.18 version is compiled by me in scratchbox using the CS toolchain and the pidgin maemo port headers. I don't use the ARM plugin already compiled on the website.

I've made many changes to the package:
  • The package name is now the upstream name.
  • The version is numbered properly. (So 1.18 is newer than 1.8 in this case)
  • instantmessaging section is used instead of net as the rest of the pidgin stuff is in instantmessaging
  • The application manager now lists the proper install size (mostly anyway)
  • pidgin is now listed as a dependency
  • The old package with the dodgy packaging will (hopefully) be removed. (But I still recommend to remove it manually before installing this anyway)
  • I'm listed as the Maintainer (for the maemo version) but Eion Robb is the XSBC-Original-Maintainer.
  • Description (taken from upsteam) is there.
  • You get a pretty name (Pidgin Facebook Chat Plugin) instead of pidgin-facebookchat displayed in the application manager.
  • I made the application manager display the facebook icon for the package.

Want to know the biggest change/shock?

I removed my Ubuntu and recompiled and packaged under Windows :O:

Have you gotten anywhere with this?

Where did you get the protocol name from? bigbrownchunx-facebookim

I can't find any reference to that other than bigbrownchunx doing work on the plugin for pidgin.

Also my failed steps were trying both libfacebook.so and libfacebookarm-1.27.so to the /usr/lib/purple-2/ directory and hoping haze would just pick it up and run with hit.

I've tried using:
Code:

Protocol=facebook
Code:

Protocol=facebookim
Code:

Protocol=bigbrownchunx-facebookim
all to no avail with the copied libs. I'm either missing a simple "Protocol" name, or it's a lower level library link thing, which I haven't had time to explore.

Anyone have an idea? I would love to get facebook chat on my native IM app, which would let me call friends when our conversations about other friends get's um, heated...

Thanks pakr for the direction, hopefully we can figure this out.

No, i gave up, probably something needs to be compiled into somewhere, or i have a stupid error in the files somewhere.

If you run "HAZE_PERSIST=1 HAZE_DEBUG=all telepathy-haze" from the comand line, you will get the list of protocols found by -haze (I did not install facebook after upgrading to diablo, so it's not in the list):

telepathy-haze[2349]: GLIB MESSAGE default - [info] stun: using server
telepathy-haze[2349]: GLIB DEBUG default - _init_protocol_table: Found protocols zephyr, qq, msn, gadugadu, icq, irc, yahoo, simple, groupwise, jabber, myspace, aim

This returned the same information to me. I'll pursue this mildly until either rtcomm is updated or facebook get's jabber.

Download the ARM linux file from here

http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-face...downloads/list

And follow the instructions here

http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-face...How_To_Install

You will need to download the icons from the download page, it tells you how to install them on the instructions page.

so im using emelfm2 and trying to copy the file to the directory, but no dice. i have rootsh installed, and i ran it from terminal before i tried to copy, but emelfm2 is still not allowed. How do i root enable emelfm2?

Re: Facebook Chat Plugin on Pidgin?

Ok for those noobs like me, heres the plan. open xterm, gain root, run emelfm2 (install it if you don't have it) then copy the .do file to /usr/lib/pidgin/, and copy the icons to /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/protocols . then you win!
