I'm wondering if I should just try to get back an earlier version. But the rub seems to be that there are multiple versions in multiple places :( Quote:
Question: what's the difference in streaming the highlights and the live games? They both coming at the ITs at the same bit rate? Or from different sources? Or... ? Quote:

Re: [ANNOUNCE] mlbviewer_gui for maemo (Beta)
Great... now that mplayer version I have gets me "unable to uninstall mplayer. Some application packages are needed by other applications."
This Linux stuff's not easy, is it. |
Re: [ANNOUNCE] mlbviewer_gui for maemo (Beta)
Just to give my two cents, I don't think the problem is with mplayer. Now I have paid (the five day deal so far) for the premium video service and I get the highlights, the condensed games and audio with no problem. I haven't tinkered with Mplayer too much but I think the issue is a different codec in the 'live' games.
Something about the way they 'package' the feeds is different. When I noticed that there was a 'condensed game' feed and hvancengi put it into the view, I had no trouble seeing them, so I think it's the way that mlb.com handles them that's the trouble, not the bitrate nor any settings on myplayer (or even a different version) BW desole de la neige:( |
Re: [ANNOUNCE] mlbviewer_gui for maemo (Beta)
OK... let me ask another way... .
For those people who can get a nice, clear archive or highlight feed, what version of mplayer are you using? |
Re: [ANNOUNCE] mlbviewer_gui for maemo (Beta)
I am running mplayer rc1 .27 for the n8x0 and it works for me.
If I had to guess (which is all I really can do) the mlb live video probably uses a more recent and/or more complex version of the wmv9 codec. Whatever it is, the source of the issue is most likely for the sake of copy protection. As the link from k-dog here said at the bottom, the issue seems to be linked to a buggy codec. The rc2 version of mplayer may or may not fix this. It is suposed to have better wmv9 support, but I don't know if it solves this specific issue. I'd have to do more looking to confim it, and I don't know that I really could without sorting out the maemo specific port. |
Re: [ANNOUNCE] mlbviewer_gui for maemo (Beta)
So. They're working on Silverlight for Linux and the MLB.
Great (I guess). Um. How long and hard is it to port over to whatever the hell runs on the N8xx's? Really. I have no idea about these things. Also - anyone really tempted to keep the premium package after the initial 5 days? :D |
Re: [ANNOUNCE] mlbviewer_gui for maemo (Beta)
I'm not sure how much help silverlight will be. My understanding of silverlight is that it is very much like flash, but with MS catches. At least on the mlb page I think that silverlight serves up a version of windows media player to decode the same stream that we are working with. If the version of silverlight is optimized for the low cpu speed of the n8x0, and for the arm architecture, then it may very well help us. Otherwise, we'll just run into the same problem I've got now that I have mplayer rc2 installed.
I now get the video stream without all of the static and messy blocks. Instead I get an aweful frame rate, and sky rocketed cpu usage (significantly worse than the top plays). I tweaked the settings of mplayer significantly, and the best I got was about a frame every 3 to 5 seconds. I really like having the full package. Oddly, my favorite use is the condensed games. I guess mostly cause I can watch them on the tablet without issue. Over the weekend I used the Mosaic app on my laptop to watch games, but that app has issue running itself. I've become just as frustrated with silverlight apps as I am with most flash apps - they run like crud. Cpu and memory spikes, and unpredictable slow downs. But I do like being able to watch my games. I've only had a night or two to really experiment, thanks to Father's day weekend and a major design job being due tomorow morning. I will definatly play with it this weekend though. I have to admit, you may have hooked my Mom more than me, she loved being able to watch the game on Saturday. |
Re: [ANNOUNCE] mlbviewer_gui for maemo (Beta)
I still can't even watch the game highlights without a lot of fuzz.
I've go the 1.0cr2-maemo.27.n8x0 version of mplayer. Strangely, this issue has sealed my decision to get a cheap ultraportable to be able to handle tasks like these (I'm waiting to see how the Gigabyte M912 does when it comes out. I'd love to get a tablet-like laptop with a touchscreen so I could lay it on my lap properly and not have to angle the keyboard and screen). Not, you know, like mlbviewer for the N8x0's should be stopped or anything :) |

I'm still hoping that I'll figure something out with this mplayer issue. If I really felt strongly about it, I could probably set up my home server to transcode the video on the fly, but I'm not exactly sure how I'd do it, and it definatly wouldn't help any one else... My mom has a full blown tablet PC (HP something or other, I could check my amazon history to find it). She really likes it, but the touch screen is no where as easy or sensitive as the n810's. It has seems to stick, like my handspring visor used to when I had a screen protector on it. The HP's screen is much better than that 7 year old handspring though ;) |

2. Now... that's weird. emelFM2 is showing my /home/user/.mplayer/config file and all it has is "# Write your default config options here!" and yet the application is playing (fuzzily) the live game feeds. Now that's really confusing. When I originally set up the configuration (.4? .5?) I submitted my login info. But why it's not showing up in the config file is beyond me. |
