$199 iPhone 2 (3G & GPS and exchange)

Does Nokia and the N series have anything to fear?

Personally, I'll be getting one of these.

I'm kinda floored right now...

I mean 199? I think that Nokia will definitely have something to fear...

iPhone 3G with GPS - $199

WWDC just ended and announced the new iPhone 3G coming out on July 11 in 22 countries (soon to 62 countries):

8GB for $199
16GB for $299

What do you all think?

I think nokia and maemo have more to fear from google android. Unless you jailbreak the iPhone functionlity will always be limited to what Apple wants or permits to be sold in the store. Android on the other hand will be for more phones and have both an app store and the ability to install any homebrew or hacked to work programs. Thus benefiting from what maemo offers most of us.

200 for super slick and inuitive device

375 for nerd device that sometimes works and doesn't have phone capabilities.

I'm all but sold on an iPhone, looking real good especially on the gaming side, though I'm still weighing in on an eee PC or other type of in-expensive ultra portable or 3rd gen Zune.

Nokia would have to really pull something out of their arse for me to stay on the NIT platform, and I rue the day that I got a win mobile device, what a massive mistake that was.

I'm just waiting to see the price in Finland. $199 would be about 126 euros. With taxes it would be about 160 euros. Knowing TeliaSonera... no way they're going to go that low.

Re: $199 iPhone 2 (3G & GPS and exchange)

The $199 is with subsidy from the operator. I wonder what one without a phone contract would cost. And yes Android is great but there aren't any phones with it out yet AFAIK.

Re: $199 iPhone 2 (3G & GPS and exchange)

While I love the Nokia N810, but have been frustrated with HSDPA 3G connectivity due to lack of any good (nokia) HSDPA phone.
Without the phone, I am limited to only Wifi browsing and Internet chat at home.

Now with the iPhone ultimately supporting 3g (HSDPA US frequency) and also being faster than the Nokia N95 3g (Steve compared iPhone with N95 and a Treo for 3G speed comparison) and also being only $199 (all nokia phones are above $300), I feel tempted to go with the iPhone also - for a all-in-1 device.

I just can't justify buying a > $300 HSDPA phone to enable 3G data connectivity for the N810 when I can as well buy a 3G HSDPA enabled iPhone itself for a much cheaper solution (for browsing and downloads and VoIP essentially).

Re: $199 iPhone 2 (3G & GPS and exchange)

$199 is definitely a great price but that's just one piece of the puzzle. I really doubt that you'll be able to get unlimited 3g access for the same $60 bucks a month (in the US) as iPhone v1.

We also still don't know how much the apps will cost.

Personally the biggest thing that scares me away from an iPhone is AT&T. If the iPhone was available through other providers I'd be much more tempted.

Hopefully this will get Verizon to lower the cost of their data access. My biggest frustration with my N810 is how much it costs me to tether with my phone.

Re: $199 iPhone 2 (3G & GPS and exchange)

Concerns about iPhone:

* User can't change or service battery
* Forced to use AT&T - horrible reception, particularly in wilderness areas where my AllTel always connects
* wondering about apps - does it have a Cisco VPN client? What about vnc, remote desktop, kismet, + all the other essential unix tools?

Nice things about iPhone:

* it is a phone.

hint for Nokia - put a phone in the NIT! Arrgh! Let us choose our own cell service!

Steve

Bear in mind that rendering websites is actually quite extensive task for the CPU. The test tells more about the speed of the rendering engine than about the 3G speed. If they've wanted to demonstrate the 3G speed, they would have used the phones to download something big and compared those times.

Re: $199 iPhone 2 (3G & GPS and exchange)

I think another thing the iPhone 2 will do is raise the bar for competitors to lower the price of their phones.

Like the iPhone did with version 1 in bringing in the slew of high-end touchscreen phones (iPhone was the not the first in fact, but the most effective player), I think iPhone 2 will now help in bringing prices down for all such touchscreen and high-end to mid-level phones.

I don't think the iPhone 1 was subsidised by At&T though. It cost the same with or without the contract. Wonder what is the case with iPhone 2...

Bundyo 2008-06-09 19:34

Re: $199 iPhone 2 (3G & GPS and exchange)

Apps will cost exactly depending on how the developers price them. Through App Store developers will take 70% of the revenue, free apps will be free (that's at least good).

i am in the middle of a 2 year contract with verizon and verizon gives me all the coverage i need- whereas att has some holes in the coverage- so this is hypothetical as i am not going cancel ... but at $199 it sure do make you want one- i didnt notice how much the ipod touch was going to cost? but if I were nokia it really would scare the s**t out of me

the cool thing about the iphone is the fluid interface- any chance of getting fluid of somesort for our tablets???

If iphone 3g can really be sold on 199$ without contract, it would surely be the top killer on this market, no matter internet tablet / cell phone / smart phone....

Re: $199 iPhone 2 (3G & GPS and exchange)

What Nokia needs to take into factor is that for a effective 3G (HSDPA) + Wifi Tablet , for the IT, you need

a) N800 ($200) or N810 ($400)
+
b) around $300 3G HSDPA phone (unlocked)

while the iPhone2 is a Wifi + 3G (HSDPA) solution in itself for $200.

So price competitiveness is the big fear factor for Nokia (and all other phone mfrs.) this time around - not the closeness or openness of the platforms as much, I believe.

Ah but if you have some friends there that happen to be in the sales dept. chances are you (or actually me) will get the employee price. Not to mention that Sonera is now our communications supplier. Just switched from Elisa.

Calling Apple tomorrow to see when and where.

Haha :) I'm not planning on buying the thing myself, let alone switching to Sonera! I have way too much experience about them already. It's just fun to see the prices go up after the $199 craze.

$199/$299 with a 2-year commitment. I don't think I want to go from $15/mo. unlimited data on Verizon to $35 on AT&T (assuming HSDPA costs the same).

I hear you. I had Elisa as my private service but they simply suck. No other way to say it. I have 24/1 ADSL here in Helsinki and for the most part, I get about 18/880 kbs which is pretty good. With Elisa, I was getting 12/512 but still paying the same price. Right now I have DNA for my GSM service, which can be a disaster. It is pretty stable but after trying Sonera for a week and DNA, Sonera comes out a bit better in terms of coverage and quality. I know some people in the products and services divisions and they are really making a push to do better. We will see. Finns make great products but are not known for their service.

Re: $199 iPhone 2 (3G & GPS and exchange)

I think by setting a hard maximum price of $199/299 for the operators Apple forces them to do price subsidy. That means they won't sell them so easily without a contract anymore.

I have a free 3G Samsung Sync that I connect my N810 too. You don't have to buy a SmartPhone to connect the N8xx too.

True, but aren't the only other HSDPA phones on AT&T ~$400?

Obviously, you can get Rev.0 phones for Verizon (etc.) for free with contract.

EDIT: nevermind, didn't know that the Samsung Sync was HSDPA/AT&T.

The 3g data plan is 30 $ in addition to the 40$ minumim talktime plan. That is 70$ a month for both 3g and phone. FOr two year 24 * 70 = 1680.

Good point and thanks for one more phone tip (for HSDPA). I will surely check this out as a cheap solution (I would prefer to stick with the N810 rather than go the iPhone way, since the N810 gives me more flexibility).

But I need to buy unlocked since At&T has this strange rule you cant upgrade before 18 months, or I need to pay full retail price anyways.
I would personally prefer a Nokia as a phone, but a Nokia phone with HSDPA is ~$400 in the US (unlocked) (and that is what pisses me off about Nokia lately).

I am more concerned about the persistent IP connection to Apple servers. I really do not like Apple being Big Brother or in this case Big Apple.

It's not just the VAT. This is one phone that the carriers can't afford to sell too cheap. People are willing to pay for it, and they will :)

About the MobileMe... I'd be very interested about the actual technology behind it. I'm a bit sucpicious about the idea that all my contacts and stuff are stored in "a cloud" ;)

The general idea sounds good though. Just waiting for the PIM suite for tablets *ahem* Nokia?

Maybe you can use mobileme (the web apps) on your NIT for PIM :P
