Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
I've read a couple of posts on this forum but none of them describe the problem I'm having. My N800 is running OS 2008 and my PPC 6700 (Apache) is running Windows Mobile 6.1.
I have Bluetooth on and discoverable on both devices. http://49d60a.bay.livefilestore.com/...oQ/n800_bt.png http://49d60a.bay.livefilestore.com/...pc6700_btd.png The HTC PPC 6700 sees my N800. http://49d60a.bay.livefilestore.com/...pc6700_bts.png The N800 sees the 6700 as a PDA, but not as a phone. http://49d60a.bay.livefilestore.com/.../n800_btdd.png http://49d60a.bay.livefilestore.com/...A/n800_ndf.png I'm using Internet Sharing with Bluetooth Pan on the 6700, and have Bluetooth PAN installed on the N800. http://49d60a.bay.livefilestore.com/...pc6700_ics.png http://49d60a.bay.livefilestore.com/...onnections.png Anyone know or guess what the problem is? Thank you for the assistance. |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
PAN != DUN
The N810 only supports DUN out of the box. I believe I remember postings about a PAN (driver?), but I seem to also recall that it was CPU hungry, ergo not too usable ... but search anyway ... I could be wrong. Oh, heck, I'll be gracious ... googled "N810 DUN PAN" and (strangely enough) this was the first hit! http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=16307 Start there ... looks to be almost identical, so there may be a solution. Are you sure that "PC Connection" drop-down doesn't have a "DUN" entry? Ken [Edit] OK, I got curious ... seems a recent project (maemo-pan) is out there to enable the "hidden" PAN capabilities in the N810 ... http://www.gossamer-threads.com/list...hlight=1#35160 |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
This is how to do it with a Treo 650, a palm: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...light=treo+650. The trick is one has to set the Treo 650 in DUN mode first and then the iTT will start to catch on.
Your is a PPC. I heard PPC does NOT have DUN, M$ yanked it out from winmobile. That may be old info though. Try to go to your PPC 's forum, they may have a way to reinsert DUN back into your PPC. Hope this helps, bun |

That maemo-pan package is what I'm trying to use on my N800. Here's a relevant article: WORKAROUND: Give your Windows Mobile device the Bluetooth DUN feature back I'll be trying that hack out next. :p |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
I just installed the bluetooth pan application for my N810. Turned on internet sharing and paired it with my Cingular 8525 with no issues. It's running WM6

Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
DUN or PAN, I still can't get the phone recognized by my N800.
I tried installing (with additional registry hacks) the WM6_DUN.zip file that is supposed to restore DUN to WM 5 & 6. Of course, I'm running WM 6.1 and Microsoft may have addressed that "DUN security hole". ;) |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
The built in "Phone" feature/thing of the N800 will only work with a DUN device and as your PPC doesn't support DUN (this is why I liked my Os2003 with widcomm hacked bluetooth stack :P), I don't really see the point in making it force to show up (I'm not sure how it would be done anyway except for changing the gconf entries)
But from what I know how maemo-pan works, it finds the device configured as a phone and makes the Bluetooth-Pan connection entry, which it seems to have done, what happens if you try connecting through that? (I get a bubble saying Bluetooth Pan is connecting to my phone which fails because my phones only do DUN :P) |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
The connection manager says "Connected to Bluetooth-PAN", then it says "Looking for phone", then it says "Cannot find phone", then the browser says "Server not found". :o

Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
Ok, I'll look how maemo-pan finds phones later,
For now: This is my W810 phone configuration and the W810 shows up as a phone to the N800 and I can connect to the internet fine: (This is gconf, the graphical editor is gconf-editor from extras) (My Bluetooth mac address is blanked out) /system/bluetooth/device/<my W810 mac address>: http://i26.tinypic.com/2rwriv5.png Quote:

I have to stress, this will not make the built in phone thing work with your phone (unless it uses DUN) but it should make it show up as a phone. I'll look at maemo-pan later. |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
After installing the DUN hack on my WM phone AND repairing, my N800 finally recognized it as a phone. So, yes, it works (WM6 though). Try repairing.

Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
Ah, thanks. It seems more likely that the N800 is not detecting it as a phone as it's detected as a PDA, even after removing and readding it.
http://49d60a.bay.livefilestore.com/...gconfig_bt.png I can edit the class, icon, and services but even after doing that, closing gconfig-editor, and reopening it, I can't add the dun_* keys. (I use CDMA) |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
Mine was also detected as PDA before repairing it after the DUN hack... Probably the DUN is the reason it is detected as phone.

Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
Whoa! Using the connection manager to connect to Bluetooth-PAN still couldn't detect the phone, the Bluetooth devices control panel is still showing it as a PDA (I used gconfig to unsuccessfully search for pda and PDA), but the Phone control panel's "Selected phone" drop-down box now listed my phone name and choosing it allowed me to connect to Bluetooth-PAN successfully. :)
Edit: Note, I had to make all the gconfig changes qwerty12 had in his first screenshot, except the DUN_* which I couldn't add. Now to find out if Bluetooth-PAN is as fast as WMWiFiRouter so I don't feel the need to buy it. :D Thanks everyone! |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
No problem, glad that gconf stuff helped :)
(Otherwise that would have been annoying for me as it took me 15 mins to pair my phone and take the screenies and the gconftool -a dump etc :P :) |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
Hopefully others with the same problem will stumble upon this thread in the future. Thanks again qwerty!

Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
Just curious, but does the PPC 6700 /w WM 6.1 have the same features as the Verizon XV6700 /w WM 5?
If it does, you may have a possibility to enable DUN access with this old trick: 1. Go to the PHONE application 2. ##3328873 3. enter code 000000 4. Select BT DUN 5. Click Edit 6. Choose enable 7. Select WMODEM 8. Click Edit 9. Choose enable 10. Push Save / OK 11. Push Ok 12. follow the prompt to restart your device discover services, and voila! you've got bluetooth DUN available. That did the trick for me with a XV6700 and my N810 when I needed to pair them. No longer have the 6700, so for the 6800 the only way I could get DUN to work was installing PdaNet. Hope this info. was helpful. |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
Thanks for the lead. I have Alltel though, and that code only dialed out.
But I'll be investigating this further. Ah, the code I need for EPST (after checking the 6700's registry) is ##778. But after entering the unlock code there's no step 4 (Select BT DUN). Anyone know if DUN is faster than PAN? |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
How do you use PdaNet with a NIT? My smartphone says the Windows desktop software needs to be running and the phone connected to the computer.
BTW: I ran Internet speed tests on dslreports.com ... Using Bluetooth-Pan: 160-165 kbits/sec Using WMWiFiRouter: ~250 kbits/sec |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
Bluetooth is slower than WiFI and I guess WiFI is meant for sharing internet anyway :/
(Technically not true but Wifi = networking and bluetooth is a jack of all trades and can be found in things like low powered phones etc) |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
The cool thing is I found a free program that does what WMWiFiRouter ($30 USD) does:
ICS Control v.21 - utility for controlling internet connection sharing ICS Control is a GUI front-end for Internet Connection Sharing, a component of Microsoft Windows Mobile. It can be configured to do a variety of things including sharing your cellular internet connection over an adhoc WiFi network. The only problem is I haven't been able to get it to work on my hacked WM 6.1 on a PPC 6700 yet. Maybe I need to uninstall the WMWiFiRouter trial. Update: I got it working! And it's 340 kbit/sec on my N800! :P That's twice the speed I was getting with Bluetooth-PAN. |

It doesn't need windows software to be running, just the app on the phone and it detects an incoming bt connection and advertises that it is also DUN for the smartphone. It also allowed me to get DUN access through a Mac. |
Re: Bluetooth DUN on a HTC PPC 6700 & N800
When I enabled it on my phone, it immediately requests access to the PdaNet session running on Windows. There are no other options.
I don't care though as this ICS Control is faster than PAN or DUN. Thanks anyway. |

For others that might stumble on this thread, you do not click on "Connect" menu option on the smartphone. That's only for using it with a windows computer running the other part of PdaNet. Go to settings, check all 3 tabs, and leave pdanet just running in the taskbar. Then turn on the bluetooth on the smartphone and make it visible, and finally pair with tablet and setup connection. I never thought to check, but i did a speed test on dslreports when I connected the smartphone: Quote:
