Don't Have Text Input Menu

I have recently purchased a used Nokia N800. I have been viewing the forums and following many of the tutorials at Internet Tablet School and Neon Cherry. One thing that I have having problems with is bringing up the text input menu. When I am in Notes and tap the tablet I always get the small keyboard whether I tap it with my stylus or with my finger. Also, the keyboard doesn't have the options to the left of the keys (such as the text input menu) as shown in the guides and tutorials. I have gone into the control panel and set the text input settings as instructed in the guides and tutorials. I'm not sure what I'm missing here.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Don't Have Text Input Menu

If you want the large keyboard, you can get it by pressing the large button in the middle of the direction pad. In theory the press of a finger should make it appear too, but this seems to vary a lot from person to person, some people always get it and others never get it.

If you want the options menu to appear for text input, click on the white icon that looks like a piece of paper with lots of lines on it, that will make the menu appear. This icon is on both the small and large keyboards. The icon in the bottom left corner of the small keyboard, and on the top row of the large keyboard.

Oh, by the way, welcome to the forum! :-)

Incidentally, as you're using an N800 have you made sure you've upgraded it to OS2008? You'll find things a lot easier and more reliable if you do, and the tutorials I've written for the Tablet School site are all based around OS2008.

Upgrading a tablet is free and very easy to do if you have access to a Windows PC, see this link for help if you need it.

Re: Don't Have Text Input Menu

Thank you Krisse for your quick reply and suggestions. Even though I have enabled the setting in the control panel text input settings so that hitting the large button in the middle of the direction pad activates the finger keyboard this doesn't work. It just does carriage returns. Also, the icon on the bottom left corner of the keyboard is not there... none of the icons a long the left of the keyboard appear for me. I have OS2008 installed. I am starting to think that the notepad is corrupted in some way.

Thanks again.

Is this problem limited to Notes, then?

Is there another program I can run that also gives me text input options? I haven't installed any new software yet.

Well, any text entry field, like the browser's address field; xterm also, but that's got it's own issues as well.

Yes I only get the same keyboard that comes up when I access any textfield. I've attached a screen grab showing the keyboard when I tried to type in the Google text field.

That's not the normal keyboard; Whoever you bought it from was doing cool stuff. Unfortunately, I don't know which keyboard that is... matchbox-keyboard, maybe?

Benson's right, that's NOT the normal keyboard. Someone must have installed a custom keyboard on your tablet.

One way out of this is to reinstall the firmware on your tablet, that should restore all the text input arrangements to their default settings.

Thank you everyone for all of your help. I am really impressed with how quick people responded and I am really looking forward to exploring my n800 further and participating in this community. I will reinstall the firmware and OS as suggested.

It's always a good idea to do that anyway if you buy a device second hand, you never know what kind of weird (or even dangerous) stuff has been installed by the previous owner.

Firmware updates are so useful because they let you roll the device right back to the condition it was in when it left the factory.

Well... my proclivity is to back up the system first; that way I can snoop around, because I'm curious. But then reflash the device, of course, and do the snooping in the backup.

(It's also a very good idea to reflash before you sell it, lest someone like me in curiosity, but perhaps less scrupulous about using any personal data left in it, should buy it.)

It was probably owned by a Korean/Chinese/Japanese guy.

matchbox-keyboard is installed by default with maemo-cjk and the input method switcher which you can see in the statusbar of that image (far right)
