Maemo 2.0 beta and Internet Tablet OS 2006 edition Beta released

It's all on http://www.maemo.org.

It states that a beta version of Internet Tablet OS 2006 Edition is available for download from http://www.maemo.org/downloads/nokia_770, but when going there it's nothing more than the 2005 Edition.

Maybe it will be up later today..

Edit: The beta image is available for download now. It should be noted however that this image is primarily intended for developers and beta testers, not for everyday users, and it doesn't include VOIP/IM functionality.

Edit 2: Seems like it in fact includes VOIP/IM. I haven't had a chance to test the beta myself yet, but this is what I've heard.

NokNok770 2006-06-09 14:21

Oh damn...got me all excited.

NokNok770 2006-06-09 14:24

sonoronos 2006-06-09 14:47

Anyone download it yet and give it a try? A review would be nice, since I'm at work and it will be another 8 hours before I can go home and try it out :)

NokNok770 2006-06-09 14:49

Everyone and their mother must be downloading this thing...I'm halfway there.

phi 2006-06-09 14:53

so, this essentially breaks everything? even xTerm?

unuselessj 2006-06-09 14:54

Just installed it. I'll let you guys know how it is....VERY YELLOW heh.

sonoronos 2006-06-09 14:58

BTW, Nokia rules. I was prepared to wait another few months for this to be released, but they did it in June. Not on time, but ahead of schedule. Gives time for developers to recompile their apps and do some regression testing - and makes me happy!

A compact, widescreen, thin, high-resolution linux-based pda with strong developer support straight from the manufacturer? This is the open source dream...

TechnoDoc 2006-06-09 15:08

Please...a quick review, first impressions, screen shots...anything!!!

I am on vacation, and won't get the chance to try it for a week :(

unuselessj 2006-06-09 15:15

I'm not sure how I can get screenshots other than taking pictures with my phone. I heard no software works. It feels a lot quicker. Paired with my Motorola V330 first try and it now has built in connection settings for tethering for many common providers. I'm "Creating virtual memory" at the moment allocating 64mb from my 1gb rsmmc card. Browsing a few flash sites while the chat/voice program was running in the back. I don't have anyone to chat with since no one I know uses Google Talk or Jabber.

The Applicaiton manager looks very nice. There is an option to "install new applications." My guess is that it will pull from a repository soon. A huge improvement from the 2005 version.

Should make a thread in the 2006 forum.

Edit:
Included media: 2 5mb mp3s and a discovery video that didn't look so hot. This would explain the size difference in the download I think.

uNtouched 2006-06-09 15:18

I just finished downloading it and I'm flashing as I type...........annnnndddd.......it's still going.......%56.........%72......%84...%DONE!....g imme a sec and I'll let you know what it's like.

Boot up is substantially faster, although it boots up the same in terms of screen, logo, and sound.

Setup was almost the same.

The UI, you've got to see. It obviously looks different and it has Beta on the top bar as well as the bottom of the left bar. Control panel has new icons...Accounts, Phone, Presence, and Task navigator.

I restored a backup from previous software version. Application manager is totally different. Icons and stuff like that are different as well.

I think I'll leave the rest up to you guys, check it out, it's something totally different. However, backup your old stuff so you can reflash back to the 05 version if need be.

RPST 2006-06-09 15:44

If I flash to the 06 version can I downgrade back to the 05 version without backing up my stuff? Say I put 06 on it tonight tried it out and then I just downloaded 05 from the official nokia site would that downgrade?

uNtouched 2006-06-09 15:52

No, all apps, and personal data would be gone. When you create a backup it saves contacts (email), bookmarks, commonly used words, etc. But programs need to be reinstalled.

sonoronos 2006-06-09 15:54

Before doing any kind of OS change on the Nokia 770, you MUST back up all of your data to the RS-MMC card. Failure to do so will wipe out your data on the OS change.

Yes, you can reflash with the old 2005 OS any time, just remember to back up your data on the RS-MMC card!

MikeJulie 2006-06-09 15:55

okay, sorry for this but what do I do with the .bin file?

RPST 2006-06-09 15:56

When you say data do you mean bookmarks and connection settings etc? I'm not too bothered about backing that up as I can easily set that up again.

ploum 2006-06-09 16:03

If I made a backup from a 2005OS, could I restore it in 2006 ? I'm specially interested in restoring saved AP/Wep networks.

TechnoDoc 2006-06-09 16:11

How is the new keyboard?

How usable is the finger / thumb keyboard?

I can tell you that I succeeded in installing an old backup, it didn't lock the tablet and found all of my previous mails, rss news etc. I just can't tell you whether the connectivity settings are the same because I'm at work and I usually use the Nokia at home

MikeJulie 2006-06-09 16:15

So what do I do with the .bin file? I've flashed BIOS before but never something I just attach to a PC

Yes, connections are there (just checked the settings without testing them)

You should have find the Nokia Software update Wizard, it is on the same maemo site where you found the .bin

Very easy to setup, tough.

floone 2006-06-09 16:22

I'm at work too but very curious to know if WMP/ASX streaming works with the new version. Anybody out there to test if http://www.omroep.nl/radio1/live64.asx works?

I must say that I like the new OS. Everything is snappier and very easy to use. Scrolling up and down in opera is not choppy anymore. I like the the new look and everything seem very intuitive. Keyboard pops up quicker, I even like the thumbkeyboards, but I think it's a little hard to reach the letters in the middle of the screen. Opera did close on me a couple of times but I'm happy with the new toy.

Please, could you tell me how to make the thumb keyboard appear?!?

Thanx

How long will the beta work? Does it have an expiration date?

ioan 2006-06-09 16:49

does google video works on the new beta os?

mancy 2006-06-09 17:26

it's fail when i reached %95 and link is very slow
can any one upload it to any fast host ?

thanks

NokNok770 2006-06-09 17:26

There is two way to bring up the thumb keyboard. You can activate the rocker in the keyboard set up to bring up the thumb keyboard or you can tap the screen with you finger to bring up the thumb keyboard. Tap with you finger and not with the stylus. Aparently it makes a difference. The screen can tell whether you tap it with a stylus or your finger. If you tap with stylus the regular keyboard comes up, if you tap with your finger the thumbkeyboard comes up. Amazing!!!

phi 2006-06-09 17:34

I can't find the thumbboard anywhere either! Youtube doesn't work, which probably means google video doesn't work either (I can't test it because my T-mobile's EDGE connection refuses to play nice with Google sites)

MikeJulie 2006-06-09 17:34

So do I move the .bin file to the Nokia and install from there? Anyone? Bueller?

You need the flasher tool. Which OS are you running? Under OSX for me the process is:

- Shut down 770.
- Plug 770 into computer
- Turn on 770 while holding down home key.
- sudo ./flasher -F BETA.SU-18_2006SE_0.2006.22-21_PR_F5_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R

Then you type in your admin password and BAM 2006 OS :)

Download Nokia_770_software_update_wizard.exe from http://europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,,79636,00.html and follow instructions.

EDIT: Sorry, this doesn't work. Try:
http://nds2.nokia.com/files/support/...ate_wizard.exe

troubleshootr 2006-06-09 17:47

It states that the image can only be flashed with the Linux flasher. Is this true? Has anyone tried using the Windows tool?

phi 2006-06-09 17:53

ok, i found the thumbboard, I don't know if its me or my screen protector (brando) but I can't activate the thumbboard by pressing on it, I have to press the middle on my joypad when a text box is selected to activate the thumbboard, but it also takes away any ability to see what's going on in gtalk or whatever else I'm using.

mancy 2006-06-09 17:56

Oh NO., i'm using windows and this 2nd time im downloading don't said that Nokia update wizard will not work :(

but seems that Invicta using windows too and same nokia update wizard.. right Invicta ??

zetsurin 2006-06-09 18:01

No Japanese support out of the box in the browser (damn).

You can drag and drop the layout of applets on the home page. Either this is new or I am slow.
