Thanks to everyone for the comments so far. Very interesting. I think I may hold off installing it for now since I am too lazy to reinstall everything when the production version comes out and also because of some apps I want to run (mainly FBReader).

Does anyone know how the USB host mode stuff works now. Did they make any changes to that? When I try it I will have to resurrect my little USB power box I gave up on and see if my folding USB keyboard will now behave.

Also does it have any New Zealand cities in the clock now? I have always been annoyed I can't even set my timezone. I know I can hack it to do so but as I mentioned I am lazy :)

I'm sorry, I did not know that it is irrelevent to this forum to post an on-topic description the exact steps I took, the exact errors that occured and exactly what I finally did to restore the image. I'll be sure not to bother this group with such details in the future.

Well, lazy I can understand, but if you need FBReader, it's been ported

I think the functionality outweighs the minor problems (and current lack of applications)

Brad.

New charging screen in Beta

I'm surprised I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but maybe I missed it...has anyone else noticed the new charging screen when the unit is off? Now it is a reverse white-on-black screen, instead of the bright white it was before. The charging icon looks about the same, with a little plug going into the battery next to "Charging".

The neatest change is that now the screen and unit turn OFF when charging is complete, unlike before when the white screen would stay on with "Charged" next to the full icon...too bad Nokia didn't just put a dual-color LED to indicate charging status, instead of having to turn the screen on...

Just my little observation...

I thought for sure I saw someone (either here or on the maemo-dev list) posted something about the beta running kernel 2.6.15, but I noticed mine is 2.6.16. Did I make up the 2.6.15 thing or did I really see that somewhere?

penguinbait 2006-06-12 15:00

Maybe this has already been answered

Whats the deal with the software, is it just the application installer that is different? Can I still install command line tools from xterm, other tools will continue to work without recompiling them right?

No, but the applications are being recompiled very quickly. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like xterm is ready :)

penguinbait 2006-06-12 15:30

Can someone explain to me why the recompile is needed

I downloaded Armedslack packages and ran them, they will not run anymore? Or is it only gui apps and the installer?

aflegg 2006-06-12 15:34

The ABI (Application Binary Interface) has changed, so any compiled program will need recompiling. Python apps should be OK, but they'll need porting to cope with the package and API changes.

I already did this

Install osso-xterm
cp /home/user/.opera/inputs.ini /home/user/MyDocs
Open with notepad, edit as desired, save (not save as)
Copy it back

Scroll happily

Someone said that there's a vim in the image already (symlinked to vi, so I imagine it's Busybox's own).

I've made some progress in porting it (even the Gtk+) version, but maddler's just said on #maemo that he's worked on a port - so his may well be released before mine.

phi 2006-06-12 19:43

awesome, thanks for the info guys.

Crossbow, how did you get around the fact that the file is read-only? My filemanager doesn't let me change its permissions.

Opera Buttons

Has anyone had any luck with remapping the zoom rocker buttons to scroll or page down in the new OS? It used to work in 2005 by editting the mapping for f7 and f8, but i can't seem to get it to work in 2006. I have used both xterm as well as a ssh connection to change input.ini remotely to no avail. Suggestions?

maxilogan 2006-06-12 20:59

 Did anyone succeed in mounting an external nfs unit? I tried after having installed the fresh compiled Xterm, but always get a "mount [ip:/export path] failed: no such device" message.

What's wrong?

Also, if you enable virtual memory, you can't remove it. I had extrootfs on the old card, and if you enable it, it doesn't switch to that but creates the new extension on your memory card part, so I can't seem to format my RS-MMC since there are no working apps yet.
My 512mb card stands as 128MB extrootfs + 384 MB (with 64MB virtual memory on this part)
So everyone beware.

So there is no way to flash the new 2006 OS without Linux?

you can flash to 2006 using os x or windows but you can't flash back to 2005 if you don't have linux.

Big pluses for me:
+You don't have to choose an AP every damn time you open a browser window; you can choose to have it connect auto to a list of chosen WLAN's.

+Much "snappier". Menu's pop-up faster, things react quicker, the "feel" is a HUGE improvement. I'm sure the virtual memory extension will make this even better, but I won't risk messing with that right now.

+You can re-arrange the applets on your Home page (ie. clock, internet radio, etc), and there is an option to add additional ones (which of course isn't yet supported; it's BETA).

The only negatives I can think of are that not THAT many people use GoogleTalk, you can't have extended contact info like phone #'s and stuff, and the browser crashes sometimes.

But big deal, the device is so much more usable now! :D I'm sure it's not long now before minor inconveniences/bugs are fixed and apps are ported to the new OS.

P.S. I flashed using this method:

(Worked in about 2 minutes, props to whoever posted that earlier in the thread)

So the old flasher.macosx for 2005 OS works for the new 2006 BETA OS?!? I really want to try it tonight, but I would hate to ruin the new 770 being delivered this afternoon!

Worked fine with xterm and built in vi (though vi can get tricky sometimes :-))

Oh, VI works fine. I had no trouble editing the file. It's just that now the F7 and F8 mapping for the zoom rocker buttons no longer work... did you get that to work in your setup?

NFS a no-go

What's wrong?

It looks to me like there is no nfs support in the kernel any more, and I cant find an nfs module anywhere either.

Code:

/home/user # cat /mnt/initfs/proc/filesystems
nodev  sysfs
nodev  rootfs
nodev  bdev
nodev  proc
nodev  securityfs
nodev  sockfs
nodev  usbfs
nodev  pipefs
nodev  futexfs
nodev  tmpfs
nodev  inotifyfs
nodev  eventpollfs
nodev  devpts
nodev  ramfs
  msdos
  vfat
nodev  jffs2
nodev  mqueue

This is a shame, I used nfs a bit on this machine. Maybe they'll take it under consideration as a feature request?

EDIT:
Scratch that...
Code:

apt-get install nfs-common
...adds nfs support easily enough, yet I am still getting the "No such device" error...

EDIT-2:
According to this guy's experience:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/list...8954?page=last
It is less than trivial (trivial being apt-get'ting some crap and tweaking the client) to get nfs working. You'll need a scratchbox environment to compile a kernel and then flash your device with that.
PITA, especially for something we are likely to get another beta version of in the coming weeks. This is definately a feature request.

Yes, definitely PITA ^__^

Thanks a lot for your help, I del.icio.us-ed that link, then I'll wait for the official release before doing anything, don't want to to the same job two times...

Edit
I'm not so involved into sending messages to developers, bugzilla etc. but, if there is anyway to ask for this feature to anyone, I would appreciate someone to tell me, I used to connect nfs frequently to see videos saved on my pc HDD.

Can anyone help me please? I have a white spot on the place of the email menu button on the task navigator (between internet and tools buttons).
I am using the new 2006 beta. Originally I did not have this problem but all of a sudden this button was gone and I can't seem to get it back.

I experienced the same problem, a white spot in the Mail place, whilst the mail was shift up by one and no Internet icon.

Solved by accessing the Control Panel, selecting "Task Navigator" and at the top selecting again "Web". Now all is at its own place. I would give it a try.

maxilogan 2006-06-14 13:20

I find quite strange that they took the "Check mail" option off, in the mail menu on the task navigator.

Now if you want to check for new mail you'll have to start the Mail application, insn't it?

I think Nokia and SE contract out to Arvato in FL to do their repairs and firmware flashes for all their hardware. I sent them my w600 a few months ago for repairs. Be prepared not to get any updates if you try calling customer service though, they'll just be like, "its in repair." I got that answer when I called and then later that day, it was delivered to my door.

flash the unit with new and old images. Still the dead white screen haha, at least it's not BLUE!!!
