Media Converter - no sound.

I'm attempting to put an AC/DC Live At Donnington DVD on to my N810.

Using DVD Shrink, I end up with .VOB files. Nokia Media converter will not accept these VOB files unless I change the file extension to .mpg/ mp2 or some such.
Having done this, a double click on my desktop loads them to Windows Media player and they play fine with sound.
I then drop them to Nokia Media Converter which takes the renamed .mpg file without complaint, converts it to good video and when copied to my N810 plays it nicely. Except, no sound.

Has anyone else come across this? Other files I have copied, my own movies in .avi or .mov have converted with sound.

I'm also surprised that other people don't mention the need to change the file extension from VOB to mpg before NMC will accept it. Or does it accept VOB in other people's setups?

Can you play the converted file in windows with sound?

If not then read this.
Well if you just change the file extension the audio stream is not getting changed.
In a DVD the audio is usually ac3 and I do not know if Nokia Media converter well convert.
That is my only thought. I use Mediacoder to convert my movies.

Re: Media Converter - no sound.

Yes, the sound is there in the converted file. As I say, no-one mentions that Nokia Media Converter doesn't accept VOB files in that I'd have thought that was what most people would be converting.

I'll try Mediacoder, as you suggest.

Are you talking about the ITVC software (in my sig) or the other Nokia Media Converter?

I tried a couple of videos that are about 1.45 gb. They play well but there is absolutely no sound??

And yeah i am talking about the nokia internet tablet video converter.

Re: Media Converter - no sound.

can you file a bug about it at https://bugs.maemo.org? It'd be great to get a *small* sample of the original file (i.e., the file you're feeding ITVC) so we can figure out why there's no sound being converted.

Re: Media Converter - no sound.

I'm reluctant to file a bug until I'm sure it is the ITVC V0.32 that's at fault so I'll continue to hunt around until I'm sure, Some DVDs have converted successfully for me, after all.

Is there a way to get ITVC to accept VOB files directly?

Re: Media Converter - no sound.

No, right now ITVC won't take VOB files directly, although if you'd like to file it as a feature request, it's not a bad idea. Of course ripping DVDs directly can't be supported in ITVC due to DVD encryption issues.

I think i mentioned this in another thread, but someone used the ITVC API to do one step DVD ripping/conversion: http://code.google.com/p/tutorial2tablet/

Again, Nokia can't support or endorse that kind of work, I am just mentioning that it's out there.

What files does the Nokia Video Converter support? In other words, if I am just starting the process, what format should I rip my media to for it to work with the converter? I read the Nokia site and it wasn't apparent to me.

Thanks

On Windows, any format that Windows Media Player can play, then ITVC can convert it as well

Re: Media Converter - no sound.

FYI, Media Converter from Maemo does support VOB conversion. I use it for Nokia 770. Quality is pretty good, in my opinion. Only thing, there is no option for it to select the particular sound track you want. So first time I ran it, I found it selected the "English (Director's comments)" soundtrack, instead of the regular movie soundtrack. I use DVDFab to extract the VOB files. So now, I just have DVDFab strip off all the soundtracks except for the main movie sound track before using Media Converter. Actually, DVDFab can probably do the conversion into an 770/N800/N810 format, but I am not very fluent in the different video formats, etc., so I'm not quite sure what to select for the conversion. In Media Converter, the program takes care of most of the settings.

Re: Media Converter - no sound.

As I was thinkiing, the no sound fault was a not result of Media Converter but of the previous encoding to take the VOB files and turn them into something ITMC would accept.

I seem to have found a foolproof and easy way to get the VOB files ready for ITMC with Amersoft's DVD Ripper so I'm up and running now.
