Diablo and rdesktop

Hi,

having recently upgraded to Diablo, i can't get rdesktop to work, i've thrown VNC on my server as a temp fix, but i need rdesktop as it's a terminal server...

Also it would be great to find a rdesktop version that works full screen and at that fractional window size,

can anyone confirm an install that works with Diablo ?

many thanks, Will

Re: Diablo and rdesktop

I can't get it work. It installs and launches ok, but when I enter the info and then try to connect, the app just closes - boom, gone.

Very annoying.

Please be aware that I never tried it under Chinook.

Re: Diablo and rdesktop

I'm using it in Diablo.

One thing that seems to happen is that it closes without connecting often. I just keep clicking away until it "catches"...

Filling in as much info as possible seems to help, domain, user, pass, computer name.. Also using IP addresses works better for me. It "feels" like there's a timeout that is set too low, so waiting for name resolution doesn't make for a happy connection.

I haven't tried this from the command line (if possible), so I have no idea if you can change more settings.

Just keep trying and it should work.

Also, this is not an in-depth answer as I don't know what other factors could contribute to the "bug".

Hope this helps.

i can confirm my previous cli version 1.5 also doesn't work on diablo, gives an error, loading shared libraries libcrypto.so.0.9.7

i don't think it exists....

if anyone still has either version working, can they post the version number ?

im not sure if this has anything to do with it, but my rdesktop connects a lot more easily since I installed openssh on my N800.
Id say give it a try, you never know ;)
(im on vista SP1--> read Here to see how to make it work!

That is because libcrypto (OpenSSL) is upgraded to 0.9.8 on Diablo. You'll have to recompile the package, wait for a Diablo version, or hack around this.

For me, rdesktop sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't. Just keep retrying. This kind of behaviour isn't user-friendly tho...

Re: Diablo and rdesktop

Well;
Just for the heck of it I spent 20 minutes trying over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over......

It will not do anything other than instantly close.

BTW our servers are not members of a domain. Rdesktop works fine from XP. It does not matter if I usr IP or dns name.

I'm running version .4, installed from app manager.

Re: Diablo and rdesktop

I just compiled rdesktop for Diablo. I was having troubles where every now and then, the app would crash after I clicked OK. This version seems to be a bit better, but still works intermittently. Let me know if this works better for anyone else.

This version works much better for me. First attempt, it was no better, but I had been using an older rdesktop version and the settings were saved in my backup. Once I flashed and did not restore my backup, your recompiled app started working great. Apparently some garbage in the old settings or app that didn't play well with Diablo. Thanks again for addressing this as my N800 is frequently used with rdesktop to manage a home automation setup. Not having it work reliably was a dealbreaker for me moving to Diablo.

i too have been having issues with diablo and rdesktop. i tried truejournals version, and get same results - no screen.

but, i tried running from an xterm and here's what i get (does this help?):

Re: Diablo and rdesktop

Yeah, this is the error I've noticed. My guess is that sometimes, the connection happens too fast, and rdesktop tries to update the window that shows the remote desktop before it's created. I don't know any C, though, so I have no idea if this is the actual cause, or how to fix it...

Re: Diablo and rdesktop

yeah, it is a timing issue as i get it to work some of time - maybe once every five times

Re: Diablo and rdesktop

many thanks to TrueJournals, i'm back to the ever so reliable rdesktop.

any chance this will ever work with the non maximised window as the vnc client does ? that would be cool...

thanks again, Will

Hello RobBohn,

I've tried to run rdesktop via command line, and the output was the same, but when i set --sync option (rdesktop --sync) everything was fine.

May be this can help you,
Thank you

Hi, I tried the normal 0.4 version and it would not even open. So I tried true journal's version and after I hit ok it crashes. I'm running the newest version of diablo. Please help.

You're obviously more lucky than I because it still doesn't work. Please help!

Re: Diablo and rdesktop

Try it on a LAN where there is low latency, then try it a few times. It should work then. Try to only fill in the IP address of the host, and nothing else (no username/password) this gave me more success than filling out everything in the config screen.

Hmm, thanks for the reply, but it's still not working. Ii would really like this to work.

Re: Diablo and rdesktop

Hey guys, I was just about to post my own thread when I saw you guys talking over here. I actually have .4 original version from chinook working fine, as well as another version I found called rdesktop-cli 1.5.0.

The problem i'm having is this... I want to use Personal Menu to create a link to rdesktop with parameters for each server I administer. With Personal Menu, I am able to get rdesktop-cli 1.5.0 working if I check "run in terminal" but it opens the terminal in non-fullscreen mode and thus puts the window to my server in that same small window and I cannot make it fullscreen no matter what I do.

Using rdesktop .4 or Journals -diablo1, no switch works at all.. no matter what I pass to rdesktop either in terminal mode or not, all I get is the window with all the fields, it doesnt fill them in, and it doesnt try to connect.

If there is another way to make a specific connection opposed to typing in different ip's/host names each time I want to connect, please let me know, but I dont really care which route I take, just as long as I can get it working.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Hey, sorry to kinda cut you off cybertron, but I finally got the rdesktop to work, I didn't really do anything, it just randomly started working. But now I have another problem lol, when I get to the windows log on screen it says "The system could not log you on." I don't know what the problem is, I tried both accounts on that computer. Does anyone have any idea?

Re: Diablo and rdesktop

Thanks Cache!

Running it from the command line allowed me to see the problem. rdesktop was not crashing - it just closes whenever it is upset about any little thing.

Happy Happy Joy Joy!

where you set the command did you use the -f option?

for example: rdesk -f -u username -p password 192.168.1.100

look also here for other options to try if you haven't.

Another option is to make a small program to run in the terminal from which you can choose the PC you want to connect.
Something like this:

Code:

#!/bin/sh

selection=
until [ "$selection" = "0" ]; do
    echo ""
    echo "RDesktop MENU"
    echo "1 - PC 1"
    echo "2 - PC 2"
    echo "3 - PC 3"
    echo "4 - PC 4"
    echo ""
    echo "0 - exit program"
    echo ""
    echo -n "Enter selection: "
    read selection
    echo ""
    case $selection in
        0) exit ;;
        1) rdesk -f -u username -p password 192.168.0.3;;
        2) rdesk -f -u username -p password 192.168.0.4;;
        3) rdesk -f -u username -p password 192.168.0.5;;
        4) rdesk -f -u username -p password 192.168.0.6;;
        *) echo "Please enter 1, 2, 3, 4, or 0"
    esac
done

replace the usernames, passwords, ips with the correct and add it to a text file which you can name for ex. do_rdesktop.sh in /home/user/

give it executable rights:
Code:

chmod +x do_rdesktop.sh
In Personal Menu you will link it with /home/user/do_rdesktop.sh

Hope you get my point..

One more option is to use the Remote Connection Manager (grcm) to store the list of your PCs. (search for gcrm in garage and here)

I'm not having luck with this deb either.
Where are the settings stored? They're not in /var/lib/gconf/apps/rdesktop/%gconf.xml

The system is making the first character uppercase. Either click the arrow (shift) key to get rid of that or use the onscreen keyboard to enter your username.
Hope that helps. Took me some time to figure it out.
