Ok, BrentDC and others who use LXDE as your primary environment!

You have to help me find the Openbox (LXDE's WM) configuration setting that lets you move windows past the top of the screen. If you can find this setting, you'll just have to hit the menu button once and then tap the top of the screen to jump the window up (I already have that part set).

This page says it can be done. That would fix GIMP and others.

The config file is in /home/user/.config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml

I've already heavily modified it to suit my needs, like mapping the fullscreen key to make apps fullscreen, menu for right-click (in QT, too), minus key for moving windows, etc.

Although you can feasibly still use GIMP in lxde, it isn't really useable. Because Matchbox crunches down windows to fit the screen, GIMP is pretty useable in hildon because minimal scrolling is needed (only with dialogs). But on the other hand, lxde respects the minimum height and width of windows, so the near constant moving of the windows makes it very hard to use. [because GIMP windows are huge].

Edit: that was confusing, ask if you have questions.

EDIT: Try this please! Within LXDE, open a window, put the mouse cursor in the middle of the screen, then press the menu HW key on your tablet (this should change the cursor to a four-way arrow), then drag your stylus from the middle of the window upwards. See if that moves the window up past the top of the screen. It seems to work on my tablet, but I've been messing with the config files.

EDIT 2: The method given above WORKS for GIMP; It is usable in LXDE.

You can use your minus key, then, to move the windows to get to the buttons.

Actually you can configure GIMP windows to be much smaller, it just means there will be more of them. But with multiple desktops, that's not a problem. Just put a few windows on one desktop, a few on another, etc... For instance, I have broken out all of the palette, gradient, brush, etc dialogs into a separate window instead of leaving them joined on to the bottom of the layers window.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

I'm not sure if the silence means that everything's OK. I hope so.

I keep thinking I've got the last beta version ready, and then I discover another cool trick. My last beta package will add two OS2008 menu icons, "CPU: Performance" and "CPU: On Demand". Setting your tablet to "Performance" seems to help OpenOffice and other big apps.

I think this will really be a great release; the fast image file and processor pegging will allow you to run OpenOffice and Firefox 3 reasonably well. I really like LXDE too; it feels like a "real desktop".

qole 2008-10-09 16:50

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

Here's a new version of Easy Debian that includes icons for setting the CPU to "performance" and "on-demand" mode.

easy-deb-chroot-0.9-11_armel.deb

Using this version on a stock Diablo N800, and the Easy Debian image file (this is important! not using a partition or anything, just the image file!), with performance mode turned on and the chroot already open, a first run of Open Office only takes 100 seconds (1:40) to a usable blank document. Wow. We've moved from the realm of "cute circus trick" to "usable handheld laptop" ....

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

It could be an interresting test to compare speed with different memory cards :)

EDIT:
When using xtightvncviewer in fullscreen mode in Debian-chroot, the N810 keyboard does not respond ; is it normal ?

qole 2008-10-09 17:21

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

As an owner of two N800s, but no N810s, I can't answer. Anyone?

(perhaps you should try running "xmodmap /home/user/.Xmodmap-keymap" first?)

The Maemo VNC Viewer works great; unless you want something specific from the xtightvncviewer that the Maemo one doesn't provide (I can't imagine what that would be), I would recommend just using the Maemo one.

murphy 2008-10-09 17:51

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

I created a ssh tunnel and use it with :
xtightvncviewer localhost::44444 -fullscreen
but with vnc viewer (at least the maemo one) I couldn't configure it with a port in parameter.

Just tried and your virtualkeyboards doesn't work ether in xtightvncviewer fullscreened (so you could try it yourself : the keyboard is visible but not writing anything).

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

I have been running Easy Debian and Open Office on my N800...I've just been playing around with the latest deb and I definitely see the performance improvement while running Open Office in CPU performance mode. This is really great, thanks to qole and everyone else.

The only bug I'm experiencing is that I can call up the HW keyboard (minus key + menu) and when I type on it I see the keys being depressed, but no output shows on the document itself. However, the regular keyboard from the LXDE taskbar does work (the xkvd keyboard has the sticky key issue that makes it unusable). LXDE and Open Office also work great with a USB keyboard and an adaptor (either the custom one from Canada or a stock one and USB Control).

I'm sort of a noob, but I'm just wondering if there's something I can tweak on my N800 to get the HW keyboard working, which would make working in full screen mode so much easier. I've updated everything (only using the Lenny repositories) using the Synaptic Package Manager and I'm running the latest update of OS2008.

Sorry to run on here, I appreciate any help you can throw my way!

Best regards,

slippy

You can; if you supply a small number, it takes it as a screen number and adds 5900 for the port number, but if you enter a large number, it takes it as a port number. (I don't know where the cutoff is, but it should work fine unless you're using a rather low port number.)

But what I do is ssh -L5901:127.0.0.1:5900 ... so I can connect to localhost:1, leaving :0 open for a VNC server on the tablet.

You're totally right. I changed my port to 5901 and it now works directly under maemo with : vncviewer localhost:1
Thanks a lot for this explanation :p

That's fantastic : I have my home laptop's desktop in my pocket everywhere I go !

I use tsocks with my ssh tunnel; that way the applications using the tunnel don't need to know anything about ports or tunnels. They think they're inside my firewall.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

Argh! Bug in version 0.9-11! "Performance mode" wasn't really "performance mode"! Will post a new version in a bit. Benson has suggested a way to lock the processor to the highest speed.

EDIT: When really running in performance mode, OpenOffice only takes 1 minute 10 seconds, instead of 1 minute 40 seconds. Wow. Running the test a second time shaves 20 more seconds off, bringing the start time to 50 seconds. Nice.

Hello my friends, you can send link for I can downloaded the Pygtk and Python, i need you for install debian in my Nokia N810. Please. Thank you.

You don't need those python packages anymore.

qole 2008-10-10 22:37

Big Extras-Devel Beta Test

OK, loyal beta-testers! I need you for one last big push before I take this to the Big Leagues!

I've uploaded Easy Debian to the Extras-Devel repository (I only managed to break the repository for a few hours in the process, nothing major ;) ). This means I need you to add Extras-Devel to your Application Manager's list of catalogs and update your Easy Debian from there (it should appear in your available updates).

I really, really need you guys to test this for me! Please, someone, run the installer from the package, make sure it works in this version. I've removed some of the binaries used by the installer from my package (tar, bzip2, wget) and made them into dependencies instead.

Here's the info you need to add Extras-Devel to your repos:

Quote:

http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel
chinook
free non-free
Remember that this repository is all experimental and testing stuff. Don't update other packages from here unless you're in the mood to beta test those packages, too!

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

Please ensure that you are installing 0.9.2, not 0.9...

Sigh, it looks like my first try at 0.9.2 was immediately put into the repository, even though I discovered within minutes that the dependency on 'tar' was being ignored, and I uploaded a replacement depending on 'gnutar' instead... Now we have to wait for another half-hour...

qole 2008-10-11 01:39

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

OK, might as well wait 'till 0.9.3 shows up in your list. 0.9.2 isn't showing gnutar as a dependency, even after the update. :(

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

Installed fine, no complaints this time. (Although clicking through locations for 15 icons might inspire me to complain... :p)

Looks like the packaging is all sorted.

Seriously, this bothers me too! But I really don't know a better way... Dumping everything into Extras or leaving out some of the icons didn't seem to be any better...

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

Hi Qole,

I just installed Penguinbait's "easy clone os to SD". Then your easy debian stops working (both bootup from flash or sd)! Error messages:

"insmod: cannot insert '/mnt/initfs/lib/modules/2.6.21-omap1/mbcache.ko': file exists (-1): file exists

(same for exxt2.ko, dm-mod.ko, dm-loop.ko)

... "device-mapper: create ioctl failed: device or resource busy ...
Command failed
mount: mounting /dev/dm-on on /debian failed
... (list of failed mountings)

Anyway to make it work, or must I reflash/uninstall penguinbaits easy clone??

Thank you!

qole 2008-10-12 05:07

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

pton: Could you please reboot and run the Debian Chroot icon right away? The "file exists" on the dm-mod.ko and dm-loop.ko means it's not the first time you've tried since boot, and it's the first time that counts when getting error messages... Please post the errors you get when you run right after boot, please.

Benson 2008-10-12 06:36

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

If you post from your tablet, then you can copy/paste the errors in. That lets you avoid having typos and include all the errors.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

Oops, you are right! The problem is that the wireless reception at my place is weak, and so most of the time I have to rely on my pc for internet connection. I should have been more careful in typo. :p

Hi Qole: Apparently my image file got corrupted. After I re-copied it, it works perfectly now !-) Now I got the two greatest extension to maemo os working :) Thank you!

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

I was curious about Debian on Nit, so I installed the easy-deb-chroot 0.9.3, downloaded the debian-final.tar.bz2 archive and read this thread http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=22669.
Using a possibly faulty 1gb no-brand SecrappyDigital card (lol) everything worked (and still works) just fine :)
Congratulations to everyone who put his efforts in making this possible :)
Now, for the "what's next" part... how about fixing the dialog boxes? :D Having them open in the top left corner of the screen isn't exactly ergonomic :D
Anyway great work guys ;)

Benson 2008-10-12 14:49

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

Well, nobody here is hacking on matchbox, nor I think anxious to start. That's where the top-left issue lies; you can have complete automatic layout with no size control, or you can have manual layout with inane initial positioning.

If you would rather have total automatic control when using matchbox, you just toggle one line in one file somewhere. (Yeah, I'm too lazy to look it up right now, but it's been discussed many times.)

JustNick 2008-10-12 15:07

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

Nevermind, I'm an 455 :D
Knowing that on the NIT usually it is impossible to move windows around I thought the top-left half hidden position was fixed... guess what kind of an epiphany I had when I discovered no more than 30 seconds ago I could actually move around the dialog box :D

Also, anyone have a kismet.conf that will work with Debian on the n810?

Thanks

qole 2008-10-13 00:03

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian For Everyone! OpenOffice, Firefox 3, Java, AbiWord, IceWM,

Since there have been no complaints about the package since I uploaded to Extras-Devel, I'm going to move it into the Extras repository. Then you'll be able to download it with any standard N8x0. I'm very close (within a day or less) of getting it uploaded. One more Extras-Devel version to make sure I don't break the repository with a small change I made to the package, then onwards to Extras!

Irongeek, you can probably find a kismet.conf that works well in the last few pages of The Kismet Thread

EDIT: Looks like you're already over there, trying to get help...

Odd. If my Maemo Extras explicitly calls out chinook and diablo, the newest version I see is 0.9.4 ... I had to disable this repository and run your x.install file to install 0.9.10

No, but you're right, I think that's the one I may have disabled instead by accident. However, when I ran the .install file, it says it had to add the repository... interestingly, I suppose then that I already had it. Though, now I have two Maemo Extras repositories active: the one installed by .install and the one I had (calling out chinook and diablo.) So, I don't know what's going on.

I'm still having trouble getting the image install to work. It keeps crashing on extract. I'm booting off the SD card... is this install supported on that?

hordeman, it really sounds like (1) you don't have 1.1GB free space left on your SD card, or (2) your SD card has gotten corrupted and needs to be repaired.

Yes, and once again, I think you are right. I was using my 2GB PQI 60x card... freshly formatted before each install. Of course, those installs failed. So, I used my 2GB PQI 150x card... also freshly formatted (via Windows this time). This time, it installed flawlessly. Either the previous card is corrupt or just isn't fast enough to keep up with the install. Thanks for all your hard work and help on this!
