[Announce] Milkytracker for OS2008

Hi folks - I managed to (I think) successfully compile Milkytracker music sequencer for OS2008. This is my first attempt to compile/deb for the NIT, so please let me know if anything doesn't work out well.

In general, the program is pretty well set up for the NIT - if you go to the instrument editor, an on screen piano keyboard is brought up to be able to enter music with.

I am not certain if this will run on any older OS or not... It may, but I don't have anything but Diablo to test it with.

psykosis,

Thank you! Wow, I had a gillion .MOD files on my old Amiga and now I have to resurrect them.

To get people playing music here's a quick suggestion on where to download .mod, .xm, etc files. You'll have to "unzip" a few of the downloads but for inexperienced x-term users there are a few that are not zipped:

Thanks again.

Thanks, psykosis.

One small problem: if you switch to another application, then there is no way to go back to Milkytracker. Yo have to kill the process and start again.

Correct - unfortunately like a lot of the SDL games, there is no direct way to - however there is a utility to be able to switch back posted some where on here. Also, via the shell, you can wmctrl it back up.

'Twas exactly my motivation - that, and the sudden moments of musical inspiration when out and about.

Hmm, you may want to check out the maemo game development wiki and look at ukki's excellent game ports, there are ways to make the icon show up in the navigator :)

Okay... my excitement might be short-lived. Maybe I'm just being dim, but how do you get access to controls in the effect columns? I have a N800 and I can't seem to pull up a virtual keyboard. Am I out of luck or am I just missing something obvious?

EDIT: Err... I may have figured it out. Use the keyboard view? I seem to be having difficulty really controlling things, but at least I'm getting some sort of input into them.

Re: [Announce] Milkytracker for OS2008

This port of Milkytracker is really awesome, but I'm still not having much luck editing the effect columns very well on my N800. Anyone have any pointers?

Psykosis... Any chance you're going to upload your compile to the Milkytracker page? I think there are probably other NIT users that might not be aware of this forum, who might like to see it listed.

Thanks again for putting in the work to get this over. Despite my issues with the effect column, this has been a LOT of fun. I appreciate it.

Re: [Announce] Milkytracker for OS2008

ok.

i got it installed, i played with it, read the manual and the beginers manual, i watched a few videos on youtube, i then went back and played with it a lot more untill i had definitly pressed every button at least twice. but i cannot understand how to use it.

can someone please confirm that it dose actually work?

and give me a few pointers as to who to get it to do something?

i have managed to track down a friend of a friend that is a tracker expert, but that could take a week to sort out and i want to play with it today.

thanks in advance

Re: [Announce] Milkytracker for OS2008

It works (for the most part), Moshing, but its not an easy program to immediately grasp. It takes a little time and trial and error to get it working right.

You'll probably want to load some samples on your Nokia first. You should be able to find a variety of them on the internet with even the most basic search. Then, you'll load them in to your Instruments and Samples patches. Switch to "Rec" mode, then "Ins. Ed." and you should be able to record any notes you play on the "keyboard" that stretches across the bottom into the sequencer grid above.

The real issue is that you're unable to pull up the virtual keyboard while running Milkytracker, so you won't be able to get into the effects colums and modify the sounds. If you're using the N810, you might be able to get around this limitation, but I'm on a N800 and haven't had much luck.

Is this different than the Debian armel version? I had to install it when I saw this thread, and it looks the same... ( I'm grooving to "synthetic b1tch" right now...)

That's really neat that you got that to work. I never tracked anything myself, but I took about 25 of my favorite mods and converted them to MP3 so I could keep them in my permanent music collection.

Likely it started from the same source, yes. The only modifications I did to the source was it was blowing up when quiting for some reason (which was especially annoying since it would then create large backup files in ~). Besides this, I didn't muck with anything (C++ is not my friend).

Re: [Announce] Milkytracker for OS2008

Hmm.. has anyone managed to get notes entered into the editor on an N800 without a BT keyboard?

I can manage to do notation using my Stowaway, but I was wondering if anyone's figured out another way around that so I wouldn't need to carry around the keyboard.. or in case I get struck with inspiration with no keyboard around.

Otherwise, this is perfect. Quite! Thank you VERY, very very much for this excellent port over to the tablet!

Re: [Announce] Milkytracker for OS2008

Bump. I've been in a bit of a musical mood recently (why? i'll be ****ed if i know :p) with me uploading things like the timidity i hildonized to extras ;)

But I've uploaded this to chinook & diablo extras-devel with some fixes I done (icon shows in task navigator so you can switch it, fullscreen is by default and it's set to the correct screen size, I've made the fullscreen key toggle fullscreen & I've made it use the hardware floating point for that extra performance boost ;))

I have an N800 too so I share the concerns about the keyboard too but milkytracker has a low res mode with a built in keyboard - I'll see if i can get the screen sizes right etc for the lowres version and upload that as a seperate build to -devel.

Wow! I was just in the writing about possible ports of MilkyTracker and got a suggestion about this thread!
Will try it on N810!

Hi,

I don't have big experience in trackers (from time of Scream Tracker in 90th).
My first impression is very positive. It works pretty smooth.
What I could imagine :) - a USB music keyboard, connected to N810.

Re: [Announce] Milkytracker for OS2008

hello,
i finally got an n810, not only but also to be able to use milkytracker.
but how do you delete a note in the pattern? without that possible it's totally unusable.

greets,
lazart

Re: [Announce] Milkytracker for OS2008

It's usual in trackers that it would be the DEL button.
Be sure you are in recording mode while pressing it

lazart 2010-03-11 05:58

Re: [Announce] Milkytracker for OS2008

yes i think it's the del button, too. but there's no del button on the n810, so i used xmodmap to asign shift+backspace to del. works for other apps but not milkytracker. seems like it doesn't use the X keyboard layout :(
has someone any idea?

lazart 2010-05-13 16:58

Re: [Announce] Milkytracker for OS2008

from the milkytracker forum i found out, that the keyboard mapped is staticly compiled. i now on which file it depends and will try to optimize it for n810.
@psykosis: would you (or anybody else?) recompile it with the new keyboard map? i don't know much about compiling for n810.
