Sorry to be a pest, but I have to ask <grin> is it possible to have a second personal launcher created...? Was thinking how cool it would be to have 2 groups of icons at opposite sides of screen :)

Regardless, I will fix this tomorrow if it is still an issue. Thanks for pointing it out.

seems like you have work ahead of you, just tried the one from extra-devel and it has the same problem...

I realise that you already know this, but to reinforce the problem is widespread, crashes my desktop too.

Also, after the crash, when reinstating all of the applets, combined volume and brightness application as been eaten (advance backlight app).

weird.

looks like I have to uninstall and reinstall.

Updated to 0.4-1 to fix the desktop crash. Thanks for the reports, and sorry for the problems!

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

It wasn't crashing for me, but when I updated to 0.4-1 some hours ago, it crashed on disable and not it crashes on every enable... :(

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

bundyo: You will have to check, but I think you are running 0.4. 0.4-1 hasn't made it into extras-devel yet (should be soon) but it is in garage. I just tried 0.4-1, and it fixed it for me.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

That's good news.

EDIT: Yes, works, thanks.

too fix that after a deskktop crash, simply run the panels app in control panel. dont do any changes in there, just run it and close it again with ok. that should restore any custom statusbar applets.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

hey fiferboy, coupla bits of feedback -

in the first version if i had say six entries/icons, and stretched the bar right across the desktop, they wrre evenly spaced with a lot of space between them. This isn't reproducably in version 4 as far as i can see - setting the maximum spacing still has them quite close to each other, and stretching the bar across the screen just leaves empty space... liked it as it was, bercause less chance of hitting wrong icon...

love the animation effect in selected icon in latest version though....

also, all apps work ok from persoanl launcher shoretcuts ecxept skype, which causes the screen to rest to white/blank background, no image or anythnig. this is reproducable for me, ie happens everytime. tbh, ive gone back to version 1 for the mo!

cheers
for all your work on this!

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

flareup: There is an option to set the padding between icons. You can set it to what you want.

How did you add skype? I don't have it installed to test, can anyone else see if this happens to them too?

alephito 2008-07-14 21:58

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

Skype works OK in my case.

Andrew: Today I had a desktop reset. Could it be this application?

fiferboy 2008-07-15 00:12

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

alephito: You know I can never rule out anything with the desktop resets (pesky thing!). What else did you have running at the time? Had you been loading/unloading this application a lot? Doing an unusual amount of playing around with settings for Personal Launcher?

I ran valgrind on the launcher today to look for memory leaks. I fixed two minor ones in the current code, but I didn't see anything that should be a show stopper. Not that that means anything.

alephito 2008-07-15 00:44

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

The only new application was this one (I am pretty sure all the other ones are stable enough, since they have never reseted the desktop --except Large Statusbar Clock, as you know :D --.

Minutes before the reset I was trying the new animation effect in all my icons, because I had found that clicking one in the middle of a row made the one on the right disappear (does it make any sense?). After the desktop reset the animation effect started to work again and no more resets.

I will continue testing.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

i also tested v0.4 but it keeps on crashing the desktop. when i tried to remove it through the app manager my tablet froze and refused to boot for a couple of times. i finally got it to boot up after removing the battery for 10 minutes :p

back to v0.3 for me! so far it's the most stable build.

hey man, i reinstalled and haven't had the skype problem again.

However, the spacing thing - I've set the padding to maximum 15 and there's still not much room between icons - in version one, say I had six icons, they were spread evenly right across the width of the launcher bar, so stretching that right across the screen gave lots of room between them.

In latest version the padding set to full still doesn't do this - the icons group together and don't spread over the whole of the bar...

am i missing something here? cheers!

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

it is really a great app for os2008

but 1 problem is there! i see a (or 2 ) blink when i want to click on app !

can u fix it?

fiferboy 2008-07-15 12:00

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

0.4 does have some issues with animations. This is my first attempt at animation, so there are probably some improvements I can make. I will look at this. I have also had alephito's dekstop crash when clicking all my icons with animations enabled. I will try to fix this.

flareup: I can make it so there is a higher limit to the padding option. Right now you can edit the file "~/.personal_launcher.rc" and change the padding to something higher. Let me know how high you need to go, and I will make that available through the GUI. The reason this has changed is because I was using a GtkTable to layout the elements before and now I am using GtkFixed. GtkFixed allows me to use much smarter auto layout mode.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

Hi there, I tried the latest release of Personal Launcher 0.4.1 and I must say it is a great app. I would love using it all day long on my N810 running Diablo, but it keeps crashing the desktop (clock, rss feeds and omweather enabled) all the time :( So I had to uninstall it until it becomes stable one day or another. It's a pity.
But anyway, keep along the good work and thanks for sharing it with us !
PS: could be nice to have this app in Diablo extras once it reached the rc1 status for instance. Sorry about my english, I hope i made it readable and understandable.

fiferboy 2008-07-15 12:41

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

http: Perfectly understandable. My goal is to make the software stable and put it in extras. I will post here whenever I make changes, so please keep trying new versions and letting me know if there is any improvement.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

hi fiferboy
the icon do not go above 40 in side which makes the rest of the icons hidden is this normal with this version? i can only see four icons but they work well.
thanks

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

Have you resized by dragging the little handle in the lower right?

El Amir 2008-07-16 01:00

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

is there a way to get a font bigger than 60? is so that would make the desktop even more finger_friendly!

fiferboy 2008-07-16 01:59

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

You can change the iconsize in the ".personal_launcher.rc" file in your home directory. You can make it as big as you want.

The problem with this, is most applications don't supply an icon bigger than 64x64, so if you go bigger the result might look stretched and pixilated.

fiferboy: It wouldn't be quite what chrisak is asking for.... would the same script that you have for PersonalMenu work for PersonalLauncher? http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...0&postcount=90

Now for my own wishful thinking....a home screen applet launcher that "minimizes" or Docks them off the edge of the screen....

Thank you for your excellent contributions to our community!

I eagerly await your next offering :)

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

I'm running version 0.4-1 on my N800 with Diablo. The only app that consistantly crashes my desktop is the Control Panel. I haven't tried all my apps but of the 5 I have shown, it's the only one that does it.
Hope this helps!

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

thanks fiferboy i saw the trick, the icons are working as supposed good job

combatdoc 2008-07-16 19:07

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

I like the little animation for the icons. Kinda cool, but I am still suffering the occasional Desktop reset. Seems to be related to Application Manager Icon, but it could be some kind of leak too since it generally happens after a long period of idle time.

Is there a debug log file somewhere I can check?

version 0.4-1

Same here! Make me reboot ever time i click between two icons...:(

fiferboy 2008-07-16 19:10

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

It could be a leak, although if it is happening every two to three clicks it would have to be a big one. I did start valgrinding and didn't find anything significant.

Thanks for the Control Panel and Application Manager hints. I have had exactly one desktop reset, so haven't been able to reproduce. I will look into this.

There is no log file, I do my debugging in scratchbox where you can see the error messages without logging.

combatdoc 2008-07-16 21:38

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

In my case it only happens occasionally, not every 2 -3 clicks, thats why I thought it might be a leak.

Could it be conflicting with another Applet? I have GPE Summary, Yellownotes, and OMWeather running on my desktop besides Personal Launcher.

fiferboy 2008-07-17 15:54

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

Okay, I am pretty sure I have this crash fixed. 0.4-2 is being uploaded to extras-devel, and should be there within the hours. Please test it out and let me know.

I have also fixed the very sluggish control bar for setting opacity.

alephito 2008-07-17 22:47

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

Well, I tried the opacity function and that crashed my desktop. But after restarting, setting a new try on opacity worked fine.

Thanks.

fiferboy 2008-07-17 23:17

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

Did the crash happen while you were moving the slider, or after you hit "OK" in the dialog? Do you remember where you had it set?

alephito 2008-07-18 03:45

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

After hitting OK.

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

Version 0.5-2 is out and in extras. This version adds an icon, fixes some animation problems, fixes a desktop crash when running setup for the first time, and is the first version released outside of extras-devel.

alephito: The crash you mention is fixed in this version. I think it only happened the first time you run the setup program.

Let me know if there are any problems this time around!

0.5-2 is still crash my diablo desktop, after i installed and reboot.

after i reboot, there is already a 'camera desktop icon' there , which was added by me with version 0.4-2 several days ago .Though i have uninstalled 0.4-2 before i install 0.5-2, the 'camera desktop icon' is still there, when i click the icon, my desktop crashed.:(

fiferboy 2008-07-18 16:35

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

The camera icon being there is because uninstalling does not remove the setup files.

Try removing the icon and adding some more applications. Does this still crash the desktop?

douwen 2008-07-18 16:51

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

hi, fiferboy,
sorry i am not so familiar with maemo stuff, could you tell me how to remove those 0.4-2's setup files? i can ssh to my N800, but dont know where and what to remove?

fiferboy 2008-07-18 16:54

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

Use this command:

Code:

rm ~/.personal_launcher.rc

douwen 2008-07-18 17:13

Re: [Announce] OS2008 Personal Launcher

not crash now! but...
a. added icon is displayed half-sized
b. after several times click and close. the added icon disappeared , i must reboot to recall the icon
c. after i add a app , there is no way to add another one, i mean, the 'add a new app' icon disappeared .
