how to extend virtual memory?
hi,
i'm quite often getting message like 'cant perform due to low memory'. so i tried to extend the virtual memory by ticking the 'extend virtual memory' and selecting as low as just 8mb but i get the message 'cant create virtual memory'. i've more than 100mb left in internal memory. please help fix it. by the way, which memory is used for this? isn't it internal memory? thanks |
Re: how to extend virtual memory?
Virtual memory doesn't use the internal memory, it uses the internal memory card. I don't know why it's limited to 128 megabytes when the cards are usually much bigger, but it is.
On the N800 the internal card is the card you insert under the back cover, and on the N810 it means the built-in 2 gigabyte memory card. Apparently that's why the N800 has two memory card slots, so people can use separate cards for virtual and storage (though in reality most people seem to use just one card for virtual and for storage). If you're having trouble creating virtual memory on the internal card, try backing up the card's contents to your computer and then reformatting the card using the tablet's file manager. If you're using virtual memory on an N810, it is VERY important that you do this reformatting process. Here's a tutorial all about it: http://tabletschool.blogspot.com/200...d-on-n810.html Another thing to try too: make sure your internal memory card isn't set to "read only". You can find out if this is the case from the Memory section of the control panel, by clicking on "details" next to the internal memory card section. Make sure the internal card's "read only" box is unticked. |

You can make a bigger swap file using the command line. |

More than 128MB just wouldn't be very useful Quote:

Re: how to extend virtual memory?
Good point Antilles, hadn't thought of a full card.
Jaeezzy, go to the same Memory box you used to allocate virtual memory, and check to see how much free space there is on the internal memory card. If there's no free space, try wiping something from the card, or better still buy a brand new card. A 1 or 2 gig card costs nothing at all but would provide plenty of space for virtual memory and lots of storage too, and as GeneralAntilles says you can even pick up 4 or 8 gig cards very cheaply now. |

question deleted as I asked (and got it answered) in a post that I sort of forgot about - sorry 'bout that.

Re: how to extend virtual memory?
Hi, there is another problem!! I cannot do anything other than just saving in the Internal Memory Card. I checked in the control panel in memory section, the Read-only checkbox is not ticked. Its the same for all other two storage-One is device main memory and the other is my 2GB Micro SD. But the thing is that I cannot neither tick nor untick the Read-only checkbox at all. Also I cannot format any of the card from the file manager of N810. Its disabled. I selected all the three storages and checked. All the time the format option is disabled. So, can you please tell me what the problem could be? Thanks.

Re: how to extend virtual memory?
Jaeezzy, just out of interest, have you ever updated the firmware on your N810?

Re: how to extend virtual memory?
Ya, the software is also updated to the latest one. I checked that with the update wizard..

Re: how to extend virtual memory?
Ok,, I formatted the Internal memory card using my computer. Now everything is showing up as it should be I guess!!!. I question, I heard of right clicking in N810. How can I do the right clicking? Thanks!!

Re: how to extend virtual memory?
To get a right-click menu, hold down the stylus. The menu pops up after a short delay.
