Hello, newbie coming in.

Hello, Newbie here, just wanted to say hello since I just registered. I am a 21 year old civil engineer student from Chile. Looking to get into computers as I advance. I got my N800 a couple of weeks ago, and I love it. Oh, so I wanna know more about the comunitty too. How many girls around? Being a bit of a geekgirl I usually am a bit surrounded by guys when it comes to computers, so i would like to check the ratio here ^^
Well I am just learning about the tablet but if I can help with anything I'll try my best!
Greetings
PS Any vegetarians? <--- we vegetariangeeks are a rare species u know...

Apparently, even "others" outnumber females here, so sorry, but we've no surprisingly large female geek contingent.

I believe both Hedgecore and Scarflash have mentioned being vegetarians. I expect others are as well, but there hasn't been much discussion of the topic.

Re: Hello, newbie coming in.

So, at least 8. In the computer department of my university, the usual generation is 2 girls vs 200 guys, right now i am doing basic engineering courses, and in a year from now i'll hopefully be entering there, so i better get used now ^^ . In the basic courses girls ammount for maybe 20% tops of the total. The math/computers world looks kinda hostile for most girls, i guess. Never my case, though. My parents were visionary enough to get a DOS machine for me and my sisters when i was about three . Been spending time behind a screen ever since, mostly windows, though. Would like to learn linux, but windows works for me, so i'm not likely to do a total switch anytime soon. Greetings

Re: Hello, newbie coming in.

welcome to the forums! Like you, I just signed up this month. Pretty much everything about the N800 has been answered here, for us newbies, the search button is our best friend :p

i got my n800 optimized the way i want it within a week, and that includes putting screen rotation, optimizing the browser, using the terminal and the built in VIM, and installing a myriad of useful apps (some of which aren't found on the maemo official page) all thanks to the friendly community! hope you enjoy your stay!

Re: Hello, newbie coming in.

Thanks, i have been checking the forums for a while before registering so i've seen some of the amazing stuff they do here. And my tablet got filled rather fast from all the apps i've put in it. I would like to learn python to make simple apps, have done a little java before but i have gotten rusty, so any help on where to learn to program towards the IT would be great.

Hej hej & welcome!

As far as I know both Python and Java are not *officially* supported by Nokia, but of course available for the Internet Tablet platform. See http://pymaemo.garage.maemo.org/ and https://wiki.evolvis.org/jalimo/index.php/Maemo .

Weirdly, they're actually both officially supported on Nokia phones (see the Forum Nokia site), but not on Nokia tablets. No idea why. :-)

Welcome aboard; stereotypical omnivorous male geek here, I'm afraid. :p

And thanks for pointing out that poll, sjgadsby. Just voted. It should be stickied so everyone sees it, and we could get a larger sample, but I'd bet it's about right.

eliagp 2008-07-29 15:41

Re: Hello, newbie coming in.

Just mere curiosity ^^ I also voted in the poll, we just need one more girl to get even with the "others". Also, its fun to find people that share some of your ideas, vegetarianism is very integrated in my lifestyle, so I always ask just in case. Have found a couple of good msn-pals this way.
Oh BTW my name is Elia, eliagp is just my easy to remember nickname for all the registrations. So you can call me that if you feel like it.

Re: Hello, newbie coming in.

Hey and welcome :)

I'm another male omnivore, I'm sorry :P

Just wanted to mention a couple of things... since you said your tablet filled up with applications quickly, you might want to look into cloning your operating system to your internal memory to give you more space, see this thread: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=19639

Also... sort of a self-plug but I and another guy mentioned some resources for getting started programming with Python on the tablet, which is by far the easiest language to get started with, here: http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22066

For java... I think Jalimo is a fairly standard implementation of J2SE1.5 so any java docs should apply to that, except for swing libraries. Swing support isn't "official" on the Maemo platform but you can get it by installing gnu-classpath :)
Oh, the other thing that I should mention is there's no java compiler available for the device, so I usually use the JXXX compiler service. (it's an free online java compiler)

Bienvenida! This site has a very good tutorial with hands on practice for intro to Linux.

Re: Hello, newbie coming in.

lol, i already cloned the OS a couple of days ago, it was totally and completely full. I was wondering if the internal memory could be wiped to get more virtual memory or general storage space and also to skip the boot menu 'cause i always miss the part where the key has to be pressed and have to start over. I will try to read some of the books posted in the tread maybe i can make a simple app in the future. hopefully.
Thx for the tips!

Re: Hello, newbie coming in.

You can change the default boot-entry, so you don't have to hit the menu. I know you can do this on the tablet, but don't remember exactly how. (You can also do it from flasher-3.0 on a Linux desktop, over USB.)

you have to use the terminal for this? (im am not really used to commands, as most windows users i prefer the open-an-app-to-do-the-job-for-you approach XD)

You said you have worked with Python before.....Hmmmm

Re: Hello, newbie coming in.

nein, don't put words in my mouth, i said i worked with java ^^ (in a windows enviroment) for 1 semester at uni. enough to do an extremely simple graphical blackjack game. Most of it forgotten by now (more than a year ago)
i want to learn python, so i'm starting to read some stuff. But useful GTK stuff still look like nuclear physics to me...

Re: Hello, newbie coming in.

My error, I missed read your post I should of wrote java not python.

No not very geeky indeed :p Dos is rather useless for windows, i mostly use it when configuring Networks (ipconfig). It is nowhere near the utility of a terminal in linux, i think. Most windows user don't get nowhere near DOS. I don't worry much since all this stuff gets teached in courses i have to take later on on university, but getting an early start wouldn't hurt.

As a system administrator of an AD with 3k+ workstations i hit dos every day. Batch scripting can be one of the easiest ways for batch procesing, startup/login/administartion scripts in vbs, hta, batch... using runas with options and parameters not available in the gui.. using template .reg files that already have the path i want to get to in them.. i just change a key and value or whatever.. without spending the 10 minutes navigating that hack of a gui regedit...

and I hate windows. But there is still stuff you need dos for when u do real advanced work.

CLI is still the fastest and easiest way to do a lot of stuff on any OS...once u learn it.

Re: Hello, newbie coming in.

I think yours would be an exceptional case, most the people i know even if they like computers dont mess much with the cmd. talking about my enviroment, maybe different for other people. Well i think this thread has gotten a bit off topic ^^, so i'll repeat my salute to all the users here. cheers

<sigh /> Common misconception, which I am compelled to correct about every third time I see it; nothing personal, just been about enough of them, so here goes:

shell != terminal
While in Windows, they are in fact the same (a terminal emulator is implemented in the shell, cmd.exe), that's really bad architecture in general.

Terminal emulators and shells are, and of right ought to be, mix-and-match; that said, practically any terminal or shell available on the N800 is more capable than the equivalent functionality in cmd.exe, so your statement would up being true, but an understanding of the way things really work helps a lot.

In Linux, and UNIX in general, a shell generally runs on a tty (in the sense of a character device), which could be a serial line to a hardcopy terminal, a glass terminal, a virtual console on the machine's console, or a pty; from a pty, you could have a screen session, a telnet/ssh/whatever link, or a terminal emulator at the other end. A shell can even run noninteractively, with input and output only to regular files.

Re: Hello, newbie coming in.

so i had it backwards? XD In this forums i really am learning new stuff everyday. Thanks for the explanation, i am not too versed in the OS ways...I will learn i promise, just don't know how long will it take.
