It's a two-way street. I expect a little bit of in-kind effort from the people asking questions, is that an unreasonable thing to expect considering that I receive no compensation for the efforts I put forth. Besides, it's not about answering more than once, it's about not answering dozens and dozens and dozens of times. Quote:

Hi,

So, what I take from your post is you have earned the right to be rude? And this subject being discussed before, well the behavior continues so maybe it needs to be discussed again. Really, all I am saying is, if you want to help, help, but leave the attitude out of it and provide the information the person is seeking. Been a member of many forums over several years and I have never provided rude, uninformative rants like the many I have read in my brief time here. If I do not want to answer, I do not answer but if I do respond, I try to be helpful instead of the criticism dumped on the OP in this thread. Just treating others with respect would be a good thing. Or this is expecting too much? David |

Perhaps it is you that needs an attitude adjustment, hmm? Quote:

Harpgliss: You're absolutely right, but to ascribe that attitude to all senior members is absolutely wrong.

Re: chinook & diablo - Confused!
Hi,
Assuming the OP did not do a search already is possibly wrong. As for the rest, I think you and I will go round here and it will solve nothing. I have problems with a response to a question being " do a search" with having no clue if the person has done so. Maybe the person has done the search the answer you provide will put it in words and structure they comprehend. Obviously, from your own post above, the subject of rudeness has come up before so it is a concern here. I think it is something all the members here can and should work on and I include myself there also. My posts above are about this being a place I can find answers and also, once I have some knowledge of my own, to share it with others. I want to hang out here but the place is not very friendly to those of us new to the NIT, Linux or both. Would be nice if it was for everyone. After that, I think I am bowing out as I am not wanting to make enemies here in my first week as a member of this community. David |
Re: chinook & diablo - Confused!
From some of the stuff I've seen I will say that usually the General is a little blunt for my taste as well... but in this particular thread I'd have to say both he and Benson are quite accurate.
When it comes to me it depends on the question.. As Benson pointed out ... This type of question is best answered by a discussion and not by one or two people just listing differences in the OS. This is a complicated question and the answer is equally complicated... you are talking about the differences between very vital parts of the tablet's operation. Both OS's have their positives and their negatives and both the positives and negatives have bugs... this is all information that can be gathered by a little research... and I apologize (well, not really) if I would rather go answer or at least try and answer 4 more threads.. instead of spending an hour or more doing my own searches and building a compendium of useful answers taken from those other 100 posts that have been provided on the topic.. It not only serve's no purpose for me but actually harms the op.. because there is plenty of other useful information in those threads that he/she will be missing because I just stripped it all out and laid it in a page-long story. If I come to a forum and I ask a question and I get someone that tells me to search: Guess what?? I KNOW MY ANSWER IS OUT THERE.. and it is nothing for me to take my time to find the answer to my own question... I am the one that benefits from my question.. not the answerer. I don't expect people to wait on me hand and foot and thus I do not do that for people.. I will help people so long as they show they are capable of using that knowledge and are willing to put their own time into it - because after all: it's for them. Nothing is free.. free information takes work and patience.. Pointing someone in the right direction IS being helpful.. usually when I say "search it" I will typically give them a keyword or two to try.. but if the keywords are already in the OP there isn't much point. In my case, If the op's answer was a simple one liner; and you can look around these forums for my posts; then I will do the search, find the exact post that answers their question; and link them to it. This thread is no such case; and thus the best and most helpful answer that can be provided to the op is to search for other people that have had issues and/or inquired on the differences... the only person who can decide if the OP should upgrade or not is the op.. I mean.. unless of course you were hoping to have a 5 page thread of all the hundreds of people on itT just saying "Yes Upgrade" or "No Don't"... because that's extremely useful information there. And since a huge discussion on the topic has already taken place then why duplicate said huge discussion instead of just nudging the OP to look for that huge discussion and reading what has already been said! But anyway... This is probably why people like me shouldn't go to the "Scene". |
Re: chinook & diablo - Confused!
In the forums where I ruled, as the boss, the easier and more repetitive questions were answered by newbies, with seniors only intervening if they saw gross inaccuracies. Here, some of the most senior posters are always jumping in with suggestions like that someone should search. I would think that these seniors would have something better to do with their time, but I guess it relieves their tension to deal with questions much beneath their competence a lot.

Re: chinook & diablo - Confused!
I wonder if anyone noticed that this was the newbie forum? :)

Re: chinook & diablo - Confused!
Geneven.. and that's probably the direction this is going when the "Scene" goes fully active... Newbies and the like with a select few of what you call "senior" members will be there ... with the more geeky types over here breaking our tablets on a daily basis :D (Deblet re-install #5.. here I come! lol)

Re: chinook & diablo - Confused!
Hi,
Fatalsaint, thank you for the post. I appreciate your approach here. I am not opposed to telling some to search but maybe provide a link to star them off with, or as you point out, key words to facilitate a search. I know if I know a key word, I do a search and provide the link to the threads the key word pops up for me. Just the way I work I guess. Anyways, thanks for the post. David |
